InactiveIs it my imagination or is it possible that my 10-mth-old ds’s reflux is worse at night than in the day?
During the day he is crawling all around and pulling up on things (and being “helped” by his sister) and following me around crying due to his frustrating mommy-itis. Maybe he is actually having reflux problems but I attribute it to all of these other reasons to fuss.
But at night, he seems to be squirming and flopping around culminating in crying about every 2 – 2.5 hrs. A bit of Mylanta seems to calm him and for several nights I could put him right back to bed. Last night, though, that didn’t work. If it wasn’t for the known reflux problems, I would assume that he is waking and doesn’t know how to fall back asleep on his own. But all of his struggling and flopping around makes me believe that the reflux/heartburn is the underlying issue. He is currently on Zegerid 40 mg packets, 8 mg twice a day.
Any thoughts on reflux being worse at night?
Thanks, Dianne

InactiveI think reflux is worse at night for a lot of babies simply because they are laying down and it’s easier for everything to come up when they aren’t as upright. You have him sleeping on an incline right? Also, how many doses of prevacid is he on? (sorry, I have a hard time keeping everyone straight). My son did best at night once he was on three doses of prevacid. That way he gets one dose close to bed time. You could also give something like zantac right before bed.

InactiveReflux is often worse at night.
Like Heather mentioned I’d wonder if he’d do better getting Zegerid 3 times per day. Most babies do best on three doses according to Dr. Phillips at marci-kids. Myles definitely needed three doses. And trying an H2 blocker at bedtime may help.

InactiveI think it is so much worse at night as they get older! I guess b/c they are laying down. I agree that an H2 blocker may be needed.

Inactiveyou may also want to check his zegerid dose at marci kids.com. it sounds low. also, with the 40 mg packs, if you are giving less than 3.5 ML at a time, you have to mix in mylanta cherry supreme because there is not enough sodium bicarb buffer to protect the drug from disintergration in the stomach.

Inactivedoes he sleep on his tummy or back? tummy sleeping is better for reflux. sylvia had her longest reflux episode when she was sleeping—-44-45 min long.

InactiveKaelyn has always had more issues at night. Her night waking episodes were the reason for putting her back on meds.

Keymastermaybe try the zegerid doses w/ 6mg am & 10mg pm and if you need more then try adding in zantac/pepsid/tagament/axid?

InactiveHailey’s reflux is a million times worse at night. She sleeps on a pretty major incline so I don’t know why. I’ve yet to figure out the answer to this problem. I know that there was an article that talked about nocturnal acid breakthrough. I’ll try to bump it.

InactiveThanks for all the input.
– Yes, he sleeps on his tummy. We had to start putting him on his tummy to sleep when he was just about 3 or 4 weeks since he would immediately cry in pain when we tried to put him on his back. (That was before we learned of his MFPI and reflux.) Now, no matter how we put him in the crib, he rolls over onto his tummy automatically.
– Thanks for the reminder to give him Mylanta Cherry Supreme with the Zegerid. I don’t understand why my ped gave him such a low dose after spending a long time reading on the Marci-Kids site himself. But, I’m going to stay at this dosage for a full week before I call the ped and talk about upping it (or just going ahead and doing it for myself). I just started with this ped and I don’t want to alienate him before my second visit.

– Yes, he is on an incline although he often ends up at the bottom of the crib by the time he squirms and wriggles before finally crying.
Best of all, he slept from 10:30 PM – 7:10 AM without waking once last night!!!!!
This was the first time since November 16th that he slept through the night!! I actually had a hard time sleeping as my body has gotten so used to being awakened frequently. I hope he repeats this again tonight but even if he doesn’t, at least I know he still can do it when he feels well enough! Thanks again for everyone’s comments.

InactiveIt appears that sleeping through the night was a one-night wonder. Last night we were back to our old ways!

Sorry to hear that.
I’d work on getting his Zegerid increased, and 3 doses a day instead of only two.
