I was able to convince my Ped to prescribe Zegrid – and am ready to start it today, but have a couple of questions that I hope other Zegrid users can help out with:

1. Do you use a 20ML syringe to mix? If the resultant volume is 10ML – can’t I just use a 10 ML syringe, which is widely available at pharmacies? If not, where did you get your syringe? Or do you mix it some other way?

2. What times do you administer Zegrid? 12 hours apart or some other formulation that works better?

3. I plan to still give my DD Axid until the 2 week period has passed – if you also did this, what time did you give the Axid or Zantac?

4. Did your child like the taste of Zegrid? Did you give it with formula?

5. How long did it take before you saw results – the full 2 weeks?

Sorry for so many questions! I really appreciate all your input!

Hello and welcome,

Most babies are getting Zegerid two to three times per day, so early am, noonish or early afternoon and then before bed. What dose was your baby prescribed?

You can order 20 ml syringes at The Medicine Shoppe (at least I was able to). Some moms here have had luck getting them at veterinary clinics.

I only tried Zegerid a few times and my son hated it, but he was 7 or 8 months old at the time. I think younger babies generally accept these things easier than older babies.

You should see at least some relief within a few days but the full effect may take a couple of weeks.

Be sure to separate the Axid and Zegerid doses several hours apart. I think they counteract each other.

Also, take a look at Laura’s intro link (stickied in the Introduce Yourself Forum). It has lots of valuable information about reflux that may help you.

HI! We have been on Zegerid for 4 months now and it’s been WONDERFUL!!!!!

1. We found it was easier to mix up a dose in a 20-30ml syringe. We then take the smaller syringes with tip caps and fill individual doses to keep in the fridge (up to 3 weeks). That way we’re not mixing medicine all the time. Makes it easy for travel, daycare etc…

2. Sarah gets her dose 3 times a day. Morning, mid-day and night. I haven’t heard about the 12 hour thing. I’d just do morning and evening if she’s only on two doses (but I think a lot of babies have done better with it spread over 3 doses)

3. We didn’t continue with any other medicine while we waited for it to “kick” in. Sarah didn’t seem in any huge amount of discomfort in the meantime. (Not anymore than before we started zegerid anyway)

4. Sarah does not mind the taste, although there are several babies on here who do not like it. We mix it with an ounce of formula at home. But her midday dose at daycare is squirted into her mouth straight from the syringe. ***If you add it to a bottle, make sure you are able to feed it to her immediately (or at least within an hour or less). Otherwise it degrades in the formula. We learned that the hard way.

5. It was probably 7-10 days when we saw results. Little things started happening sooner…but full effect was about 7-10 days. Less fussing, not SCREAMING when tired, sleeping without the swaddle, and eventually moved from swing sleeping to crib. Sarah’s sleep issues were a huge part of our reflux frustration. Those took a little longer to work themselves out b/c they had become learned behaviors, but she’s a happy wonderful funny little gal now! Sarah was also a “comfort” eater so we didn’t ever have to worry about her refusing a bottle due to the pain, etc…One weird thing I just remembered that started after the zegerid kicked in…she started taking a pacifier all of a sudden. She wanted nothing to do with one before. I think it hurt to suck on it without the comfort of formula coming out with the sucking. She quickly gave up the pacifier and is now a thumb sucker (but only when tired)

Just curious about your baby’s weight/age and the dose that was prescribed…??? Oooooh, I just saw it’s a NEW baby!! Congrats! Is it a boy or a girl? I have two cousins named Riley…one’s an 8 year old boy and the other is a 3 year old girl. What is the dose?

did you get the 20 mg packs or the 40 mg packs prescribed? there is quite a difference, in the 40 mg packs there isnt enough buffer so you have to add mylanta supreme for the calcium carbonate.

zegerid is IR-so you dont have to time with meals and can give with formula which is great. i used to sneak the syringe in the side of my sons mouth while he was taking a bottle.
sometimes i would give it alone as well and he never minded the taste too much.
we saw results in about 3 days since its IR and not DR, like other PPI’s.

These ladies did such a great job I really have nothing to add. If you get desperate and really need syringes, just private message me your address and I’d be happy to send you a couple. I have 35ml syringes that I get from our local vet clinic with tip caps that I mix 3 batches in which works GREAT!! Zegerid is stable in the fridge for 21 days or out of the fridge for 24 hours so mixing up a big batch isn’t a problem (a little less time feeling like a mad scientist never hurts ). We too mixed it with 1 ounce of formula and she sucks it right down – she is 11 months old (yesterday) and still takes it like a champ!!

Wow, 2 weeks old and you were able to get your little one on Zegerid – you are a GREAT mommy. Hope it works as well for you as it has for us. Please let me know if you have any other questions – happy to help out!

it was day 12 for Jonah. the PPI was working before then, don’t get me wrong, but all of a sudden on day 12 it was an ‘AHA!’ moment!

Thank you all SO much! This is my second go around with reflux and I recognized the symptoms immediately. Fortunately my Ped trusts my judgment and was open to the info about Zegrid – but not the increased dose. Riley (DD) is 2 1/2 weeks and on 3.63 mg 2x a day. I know this is significantly less than the recommended dose by Dr. Phillips. But my Ped said she would go higher if we don’t see results. I hate waiting – knowing the higher does is likely necessary. I am using the 2mg packets – but my dose doesn’t even equal 3.5ml so I was concerned I wouldn’t meet the buffer. Fortunately Dr. P emailed me and indicated I could mix it with 2ml of Cherry Mylanta to ensure the buffer on the 20mg packet with such a low dose is effective. I am struggling a bit with getting her to take it due to the tatse. I put it in a nipple and mixed it with a bit of formula. But I think I will try mixing it with a full ounce per your suggestions. Again thanks – I forgot how trying these first few weeks are with a baby in pain!!
