InactiveIf Justice is teething again it has been bothering him for a few days. As far as it being food related I guess it could be. I think I am going to stick it out until next month and see what happens. If by next month things aren’t better I will either try cio or the diet again.
Hey Lori, everything you have mentioned Justice does while nursing. He seems like he is uncomfortable to me, but I can’t tell if it is reflux or teething, or ear infection. He has been clawing at his ear, but that could always be teething. I am so sick of trying to figure this out. WHEN IS THIS CHILD GOING TO SLEEP?

Inactivei cant imagine you would try CIO before sticking to the elimination diet? that seems cruel to me, because what if he is being bothered by what you are eating, and then you end up leaving him to cry it out and he is in pain….

InactiveShelby,
I think I remember you saying things seemed to improve while on the diet? I’m just curious. I didn’t exactly have the same kickign issues, but Lucas was always uncomfortable and unable to sleep. This was not solved until we dealt with issues of food along with reflux. I am only repeating this because your situation sounds so familiar to me, and we were miserable until 17 mos of age, when I finally removed the final thing that seemed to give him a lot of problems. I strongly urge you to do the diet again and stick to it (I fully understand why it fell apart the first time and sympathize– I really understand first hand how difficult and scary and utterly impossible it seemed to try to do this while out of town). However, I think if things are rough, you need to be able to eliminate these possible food issues before moving along. I mean, maybe not, but sooner or later they will want to do testing and other things adn it seemed to me that it would be so much easier wtih some of the food questions answered before involving invasive testing and or treatments. This is what I did myself, around 8 mos we removed dairy, then soy, then around 8-10 mos I stopped all solid foods for him altogether because I was going absolutely nuts not knowing what was happening. Once he had two okay nights in a row nad I ate only the foods I had those two days for like three weeks. We are talking totally desperate. I know the diet is very difficult and requires a lot of you, but I urge you to take a deep breath, and try again.
I feel like its difficult to know where to go next without fully investigating the food issues as a real possiblity. Testing options will involve things like upper gi or swallow study, endoscopy, ph probe study. Trust me, we’ve had all three with Lucas and although they went smoothly, I would gladly have skipped the whole mess if I could have.
Also, just for informational purposes, Lucas always pulled at his ears when refluxing and in pain. We often questioned ear infections and had him checked several times and for us– it was never an ear infection. He has yet to have an ear infection. Teething on the other hand, made things ten times worse and was a nightmare. Teething clouded everything. HOWEVER, I would say that even while teething if there are food problems and you can resolve those even a bit– there should be some sense of relief.
I really hope that something in all our advice helps you or makes you feel better at the least. I really understand as do so many of us that have already written here, how awful it is to be going through this. My heart goes out to you. Hang in there!

InactiveShelby,
It sounds like your sleep issues are a bit more longstanding anyway…..
but Alana has been really bothered by her teeth for about 10 days. It has only settled the last day or so, with her reflux now being controlled again. Not saying that is what it is for justice, but it seems that some babies can be bothered a bit by it (one of the mums in my mothers group turned up last week and her baby had two teeth one morning without any trouble- not fair
). It sounds like the diet is really hard, and when you are dealing with no sleep and the stress of reflux and everything, it is no doubt even harder. I wish there was someone who could give you a nights break, so you could have a proper sleep. I can’t imagine how hard it is to make any decisions etc when you must just be absolutely exhausted.
At this stage I personally think it is really important for you to do what you think is best and what you think you can manage. Whilst we can all give you advice and ideas, you have it really tough and need to do whatever you feel you can and still get through the day. I wish there was something that I could say or do to help you.

InactiveNatalie, you make a very good point. I don’t know why, but I hadn’t really thought about it that way. My husband has been wanting me to do cio for so long that is why I even thought about it. I don’t like the idea at all, but am starting to feel desperate. I will try the diet again before I go there. By the way, he is starting to sleep better again. Not during naps, but at night.
Thanks to all for your honesty.

InactiveI can sympathize with you, dh has told me to cio also but I refuse just as I did when my daughter had sleeping issues and wound up having upper resp issues and RSV! So stick with your mommy instincts. I too am at wits end with no sleep and having to care for a tpreschooler that will not sleep unless I put her back down each and everytime my son wakes up, it gets to be pretty crazy here every night..I have been doing a lot of praying for patience! hang in there.

Keymastershelby,
you got take what you can get you know

?So night time is better than naps, well that’s something
!Not to scare anyone or bum anyone out, but I used to post about Jonah’s terrible napping- he was Sir No Nap & I tried EVERYTHING including CIO, which didn’t work at all- he’d cry for an hour- it wasn’t worth the misery for me
– so MAGICALLY at 18months he started napping
…so i guess my point is: maybe focus on one thing like night time for now instead of making yourself crazy about both times?
not sure if this is helpful

InactiveI’m having just the same problems as you but Kaylee has great naps and terrible night sleeping, whats that about??
I think she is teething badly too and i can see lumps under the gum but the teeth are moving soooooooooo slowly its cause her reflux to become hellish!! She also does the same things when nursing but is eating solids well.
I wish these kids came with a handbook
