Hi everyone- just found this website and started reading. I do not feel alone! my 2 1/2 month old son was put on Prevacid last Weds. his symptoms now seem worse! I hated putting him on meds but I felt so lost on what to do. He is not sleeping – maybe 1/2 hr intervals duting the day for a total of 3 hours (maybe) and at night he was doiing 6 hours straight, nut now that he is on prevacid he sleeps for 2 hours at a time. I have a 3 1/2 year old who is also losing sleep because of my son;s screaming. I feel so bad for both of them. My son just started having issues with feeding now – not so before the meds. has anyone experienced anything like this? He also has so much gas – he is on enfamil gentle ease (3rd formula). We can never put him down he screams if we do..I am due to go back to work in 2 weeks but I am so afraid my sitter will not be able to deal with this if I don;t do something to help my little man. He is actually sleeping right now after a night of constant waking. thanks everyone!!!!!!

I know that some babies have a hard time getting used to the meds at first…maybe after his system has some time to adjust, he will get better. I BF so I don’t know much about formula, but maybe he has a milk intolerance and would do better on a different fomula.

Hi and welcome!! You are not alone – we are here for you

This whole reflux thing can be so confusing and horrid to deal with. How much Prevacid is your little guy on? I am sure you have read the many stories about correct dosing for infants with reflux and have probably already checked out http://www.marci-kids.com. Many are really finding out that the correct dosing is critical in getting relief for your sweetheart. I am not a Prevacid mommy but I have read that it can make little ones uncomfortable during the first few weeks. Hopefully a Prevacid Mommy will jump in to help out in that area.

We are here for you and hope you find the support and info you need – I know this board was my lifesaver!!

actually i bf also, had to supplement though. you may be right abt taking time for his system to adjust. His ped just said the same thing, I just not expect it to get worse. I am also taking him to a chiroprator for an adjustment, our family has all believed in the natural way, so I am gonna try with my son.

My son is on 15 Mg once a day, I checked the website and this seems to be fine, I guess I have to wait and see if this works, just feel so ad for my baby. I know you all understand. Plus we all need some sleep around here!

One more thing to try would be the elmination diet. Brianna ended up with a dairy/soy intolerance. Once I removed those things from my diet, she started sleeping much better(that was one of the only signs she had…she couldn’t take more than 30 min naps during the day, and she would wake every 3 hrs almost to the minute at night). Let me know about how the chiroprator does…I thought about it, but we never did, but would love to hear what you think just in case we end up with reflux from another baby.

give zantac (or pepsd or axid or tagament) also-

give it 2-5hrs seperate from the ppi

Yes, I agree with the Zantac thing…adding that at night to Brianna’s routine has helped her as well!

Hello and welcome,

How much does your son weigh? 15 mg sounds very low to me. Also, make sure you are giving it on an empty stomach and following it up with a feeding 30 minutes later. Docs and pharmacist don’t always tell you this.

As for adjusting to the meds, Myles had definite tummy cramps when he first started Prevacid. I was so worried and so sick of it all by then, but I hung in there with it and sure enough after about two weeks the cramping stopped and his reflux pain was gone as well.

How are his stools? Does he go regularily?

I agree with the others that MSPI is a possibilty as well. Can you BF exclusively for a few weeks to see if he improves with the meds? It can be so hard to figure out what’s wrong when you have so many variables; new meds, formula, foods passing through breast milk, etc. I BF also and I remained dairy free until after Myles was on meds and was feeling better. Then I gradually started adding dairy. At the time I didn’t know that babies can also be intolerant to soy. Thankfully Myles wasn’t but that’s something to consider. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone. My son weighs 15pds. I think my Ped was reluctant to prescribe as it was. When I intially asked about Zantac etc she said not necessary. Looks like I need a new Ped which I have already been searching for. Anyhow his stools are reg but have always been runny which the ped said was normal. Better then when he used to scream whern he had a bowel movement, we have come a long way with the formulas. This has been such a journey in such a short time. I will let you all know how the chiropractor goes. thanks!

I found Alana reacted badly to losec (stomach cramping etc) but had no probs with prevacid. I took her of the losec due to this and then realised it had actually been working. Because of the side effects though my sympathetic GP prescrived the prevacid (zoton). So it is possible that some babies to have problems on some meds and do better on another. So if your little one doesn’t settle, maybe you could try the other med?

Maybe try mylanta for a little while if the ped won’t prescribe zantac?

According to marci-kids your son should be getting 10 -12 mg or Prevacid 3 times per day. So, his dose is way too low.
