Meds

Is the increase in dose helping? I’ve have heard of silent refluxers suddenly becoming spitters, so it’s certainly possible and may have nothing to do with the meds. In any case I’d take the spitting over the pain. My little guy was a huge spitter; actually more of a puker. It was frustrating to say the least but as long as he was pain free and gaining weight, that was all I could ask for.

Myles had ups and downs in his puking. Some weeks he puked constantly and some weeks it was much less. It seems like a common theme around here and many of us call it the reflux rollercoaster.

I hope that helps some.

We went through periods like that with Hailey. Actually, it was usually teething, or a virus, or something else that caused her to suddenly start vomitting.

The other possibility is that his acid isn’t being well controlled despite the dose increase. I know that PPIs don’t stop vomitting, but when the acid is controlled it actually stops irritation of the esophagus and the LES, which creates a cycle. We’ve been told that when the acid isn’t well controlled, it can irritate the throat and LES causing more vomitting then you would otherwise see. We definitely saw this with Hailey- if she missed a few doses she went from a silent refluxer to a heavy puker.

Also, I don’t want to sound pushy, because I’m glad that your compound has worked well for your son to this point. But we had a lot of problems with compounds, so I’m always skeptical. Marci-kids says that for a compound to be effective, it needs to be made with at least 16.8 percent sodium bicarb (for any doses under 7ml) and that each dose needs to have at least 3.5ml to ensure enough buffer per dose. They should be made somewhere between 2-4mg/ml and with no added flavourings whatsoever, including simple syrup, stevia powder and other sweeteners.

Good luck.
