Inactiveif you give fish oil, you have to tell all the dr’s. Fish oil is a blood thinner.. so if your baby takes it and ever needs surgery for any reason, the doc needs to know they are on it. (it’s awesome btw I take it too)

Inactivei’m not sure about the mercury…. i never thought about it concerning the fish oil! i hope not, i will ask next time i go…

InactiveThanks Jill. That’s good to know.
About the mercury, I thought I read somewhere that you have to be careful about mercury with infants and that some fish oils contain higher levels than others, but there’s so much information out there to digest. I may be mistaken.

InactiveMy daughter was placed on Neocate last month and the cans we get say NOW with DHA & ARA. THe GI doc we see didn’t know that it was now added to it because she wanted us to see if we couldn’t get off Neocate to something that had those in it. My daughter Hope’s formula was being supplemented with Canaola oil for extra calories…after about a week I just couldn’t stand the look or smell of the oil in her formula and quit adding it. She’s still gaining a small bit but until she stops I really didn’t like the idea of adding oil to the formula just for calories…Polycose made her cramp…at least we THINK thats what did it.

InactiveYEah the neocate with the dha/ara is available now, but you have to specifically ask for it…
as far as oils, both my kids are on flax oil, and our ped GI was fine with it…its good for many things, including helping avoid inflammation of the intestines (thats why my son is on it) and for brain growth.
I used to do fish oil with my son, but now with my daughter and all her food issues we do flax since fish is a common allergen. Flax also has omega 6 and linolec (sp?) acid which is very good for the brain also.

InactiveAny particular brand of the flax seed oil?
We tried avacado last night (didn’t have the oil, though it sounded like a good idea so improvised
). Welll the little one was not enamoured with the taste so I had to hide it in an alltime favourite-sweet potato- but I am so sure due to my efforts that she is so much smarter today LOL! But seriously, I had never given to much thought to this and I am a neuropsychologist who should know all about development!!!! So I really think I will look further into this. Thanks for the great advice.

InactiveI hate to sound like a health food nut (I am accused of this often), but I agree with flax seed oil supplements. Just make sure you keep it in the ‘fridge.
Flax seed is quite a little oil! Sander gets it in his yoBaby yogurt, and I just started adding a tad to his formula. He couldn’t ever handle the DHA/ARA in his formula, so we had to get one without. The DHA/ARA in the formula we had was chemical based. The Flax seed is obviously natural, and he handles that beautifully. It helps bowls too.

And…I must add (nut again)…it is AMAZING for you, too. It keeps you full. Gives you energy. Even helps joints. I LOVE it!!! I either buy milled flax seeds and add to cereal, or the oil (I like Spectrum Organic. I can find it at my regular grocery store in the Organic section, or at Whole Foods…if you have one (or any health-food store for that matter). I add the oil to morning smoothies, or just take a couple of tablespoons right out of the bottle. It has a decent flavor–nutty.
Anyway–sorry about my rant!

InactiveThanks Sanders mum- always happy to hear from another “ranter”. Don’t get me started on chopping down old growth forests
!I remember talking to a naturopath about flax seed oil and using if on one of my health kicks. I might give it a try myself!

Inactiveoh yes i agree with the flax seeds as well.. shane cant handle the dha in the formulas too.. sandersmom: what formula did you use for him that didnt have it in it? i might have to get off isomil( i will post about that in another post), but as far as the hypoallergenic ones go.. i am pretty sure they are have it in them right?

InactiveYes, I use the Spectrum Organic brand too. The kids all take it by spoon every morning at breakfast. Blech! I don’t know how they do it. I mix mine into OJ and suck it down fast with a straw. I’m a wimp!

InactiveWe were lucky in that Sander didn’t need special formula. We tried Nutramigen (sp?) for several weeks, as well as a couple of others, and they never made much of a difference. We tried Good Start w/ the DHA/ARA…no change (though none was really expected). Someone on this site told me to try no DHA/ARA, so we did Good Start w/out those in it. There was an almost immediate change. Of course, some might argue this was a coincidence, and it may well have been. But, I have kept him on it since!

InactiveHa! I know…I used to work for the Development Authority outside of Savannah, GA. I watched as they filled in swamp lands and chopped down forests to build distribution centers, etc.. Yes, jobs were created, but it was heartbreaking. I was glad to leave that job!
Yes…you should try the Flax…it really is amazing.

Inactivethanks… shane actually behaved well on the goodstart but the nurse thought his loose poops all day long was a sign of intolerance, plus he developed mucous in his stools with yogurt. but that is so great he was able to do it! i am at my end with trying to figure out what is going on with him now! its a shame that the formula companies are all being taken over by the dha stuff, its almost like we have no choice but to give it to them!
