InactiveI don’t have an answer about the solids, but Sarah does the same thing with her sippy. One mom on here suggested removing the spill-proof valves. We tried that and it was like a fire hydrant! She choked on every mouthful. At least she learned though…but she still prefers to chew. I chalked it up to teething but maybe it will just take time???

InactiveNatalia,
I am having the same problem with Chloe and solids I can’t wait to see what everyone has to say about this issue. (Although Chloe is a little younger almost 7 months). Does Trace also seem really interested in everything you eat too. Chloe practically pries glasses out of my hands to try to drink from them. I don’t get it.February 3, 2007 at 10:10 am #23946hellbennt
Keymasterhave you guys put chunks of stuff on their trays to play with/eat? I’ve been doing that with Ari & it’s surprising what he can shovel in his mouth, lol. so far just small chunks of avocado and steamed apple. he only has two bottom teeth that aren’t even all the way in yet,
yet he seems to ‘know’ how to chew? it’s weird…lol

then when they’re playing/trying to scoop the slimey chunks into their mouths, you can try sneaking the spoon of puree in there…

InactiveNatalia,
I wouldn’t worry too much. I have posted this before, but my mom told me I didn’t eat a bite of solids until I was 15 months old. I would do the exact same thing Trace does. I now LOVE to eat EVERY food out there
.As for the sippy, Brianna did the same thing at first. We just kept offering, and now she has learned how to tip the sippy cup up by holding in her teeth, and drink with no hands!!! She is only 13.5 months, and really only started getting good at a sippy around 11 months.

InactiveMyles still won’t use a sippy cup.
He finally learned to drink from a straw cup at 12 months.Maybe try giving him some special toys to play with while you feed him. Myles used to be very resistant to being fed but toys changed everything for him. He learned to see meal time as fun time with mommy and I’d sneak bites in while he was playing. He eventually began to love all of his pureed baby foods, and it really didn’t take that long at all. A few weeks maybe.

InactiveI would also try with a favourite toy or video going and see if that makes a difference. Sometimes babies with reflux are just slower to start. I personally wouldn’t worry about it just yet. But I would keep offering, and just follow his cues.

InactiveTaylor just chews at her sippy cup as well. We (speech therapist and I) are really trying to work on her drinking out of a sippy cup since to this day she does not know how to suck on a bottle properly. She just lets the formula drip in her mouth then swallows. Anyways, we are using the Gerber sippy cup without the leak valve. We are holding it up to her mouth and gently tipping it in her mouth while supporting her chin. She gets little sips at a time, we are trying to see if she actually cups her mouth over the sprout to take a drink and she does it every so often. She actually seems interested in doing it herself but of course not able to do without the leak valve but doesn’t know how to suck from the sprout to put the valve back on. So far we have gotten her to take 1 oz prior to fussing.

InactiveSue,
After reading your post, I think you might want to try this sippy cup we’ve been trying with Bryce. I mentioned it in another post, but it’s the Nuby sport sipper. It’s no leak, but it has a soft silicone mouthpiece so Bryce can just chew on it and get milk out. He will also cup his mouth around the spout, which he has never done with anything, even a bottle (except when he was really little). Anway, it might be worth a try. Hope that helps.February 4, 2007 at 7:35 am #24045Anonymous
InactiveThey also have the Nuby sippy cup that might work for Trace. I bought one for Chloe after my friend recommended it and sometimes she will take some breastmilk from it. It also has the soft silicone spout that can be chewed on. I bought ours at Babies r us but I didn’t see the sport sipper there, but that may be because I wasn’t looking for that kind of cup. I also think they also carry them at Walmart or Target, I forget which store my friend said she bought hers at.
