InactiveHello all! This group has been so great with the advice and input so far, so I thought, what the heck, I might as well try asking about this. Sadie, who is now 11 weeks, has reflux, but it’s caused by her DGE- Well, she is doing pretty well, and is on .5 ml of zantac syrup twice a day- she doesn’t scream anymore, sleeps pretty well, and generally seems okay- well, she is 2.5 lbs heavier now than when she was prescribed the Zantac, and I know it is supposed to be really sensitive to weight-
So, the past few days, she seems to be eating a little less, and sometimes she gets cranky when she is eating- Like she will start to fuss, and you pull the bottle out, but then she cries like she wants it again, then you put it in, and she fusses again- But, she doesn’t do this every feeding, so I am not sure if it’s reflux? She only does this a few times a day, and during the night she is fine, eats her food quick and no fuss- So, my question is, am I imagining this is her reflux coming back? Does anyone out there use the zantac syrup, and is there a best way to give it to her? I usually give it to her before her bottle so she can “Chase” the taste of it away- but, is that the best way?
Also, when I called my doctor about upping the dose because of her weight gain, he told me he wants to wean her off of it because she should “Grow out of this soon”!!!! So, basically, if it is reflux and she needs more meds, we might as well not give her the zantac at all because if it is weight-sensitive, she is not getting enough- I am so frustrated! My doctor is just way too laid- back- everything with him is “she’ll grow out of it”..when I originally wanted to switch formula because she was in so much pain, he says “it’s just colic- sit back and relax”!!!! I know I need a new ped, but I just haven’t had the time to find one I like- I mean, I don’t want to keep drugging her if she doesn’t need it, but I don’t want to wait until she is in pain all the time before we do anything!
So, I need advice- Am I imagining things? Do your refluxers sometimes eat fine, and sometimes fuss? Maybe she’s just cranky from other things? Am I giving her the zantac correctly? Should I try giving her mylanta without asking my doctor, to see if it helps? if so, how much?
thanks for any input!!!!

InactiveAt 11 weeks the last thing I’d be thinking of is weaning her off of meds. You’re right, your doctor is way too laid back. The earliest I’ve ever heard of a baby outgrowing reflux is six months and most of the babies on this board (since I’ve been around) have been at least 9 months when they outgrew it.
And, no I don’t think you’re imagining it. That “conflicted” behavior while eating is so classic of reflux. They seem like they want to eat but then they eat very little, fuss at the bottle, or refluse to eat despite being hungry. My babies also had some good feedings and some bad feedings early on, but as time went on and they were not properly medicated it progressed to nearly every feeding. Also it’s not unusual for reflux babies to fight feedings while awake but eat better while groggy and half asleep. Maybe they are less aware of their pain. I’m not sure, but my refluxers did the same thing, as many on this board have also.
It wouldn’t be a bad idea to try some Mylanta Cherry Supreme. Probaby 1 ml would be enough. I gave Myles 2 – 2.5 mls at 5 months. Too much will cause loose stools, so if you see that you may want to give a little less the next time.
I think it’s fine to give Zantac before her feedings as you are doing. Her dose is probably too low, though. I hope you can find a doctor who will take her discomfort more seriously and hopefully put her on a PPI medication.

Inactivei hope you can find a doc that will give you a PPI.
my son is 9 months and i do believe no where near outgrowing the reflux. our GI said do not even ATTEMPT to wean him before a year old.
your ped sounds like an a-hole. im sorry to be so blunt but its true. reflux is very painful, it even made me cry during my pregnancy, how in the world can your ped be okay with letting your baby be in pain?

InactiveWhen my daughter was having her problems with reflux she would pull away from the bottle, then want to eat. This would not be every bottle and not even during an entire bottle. Soemtimes it would be halfway through the bottle, sometimes every other bottle. So I also questioned if it was refux also. I agree that she needs a PPI. It has made a world of a difference for my daughter. Adriana’s mommy2007-2-20 21:4:3

InactiveAvery, I think the ups and downs of fussing during eating is pretty classic for reflux too…certainly up your dose of Zantac without even asking your Dr- I presume you have a nice big bottle of the syrup
. Check out lauras link for the dosing stuff. I think we can all relate to the “i don’t want to drug her if I don’t need to” but it seems as if these meds are pretty harmless so you (and the rest of us) can take a little solace in that
. In the meantime maybe have a chat with your family dr…sometimes they are more sensitive to the needs of little reflux babies and can be more easily persuaded by the Marci-kids stuff about PPIs.February 21, 2007 at 5:43 pm #25483Anonymous
InactiveThanks everyone- I agree, that the meds do not hurt, so weaning her off when he didn’t even ask if she is better or not doens’t make much sense- and, in her case, if anything, she seems worse on some days, so why would you DECREASE it? All along my ped has made me feel like I am overreacting, and you can tell he thinks that time heals everything, even her gas, that was so horrible that she would scream every time she passed it! I kept trying on my own until I found GoodStart, and lo and behold, she is great! Again, why wouldn’t you tell a parent to try anything they think can help? Seems like all peds are so frustrating!
I’d like him to get severe reflux and gas and tell HIM to just “sit back and relax”, it will go away!

InactiveOr, let him take care of a baby with severe reflux and gas for one entire day! Then maybe he’ll stop telling parents to relax, it will go away. I think if men were primary caregivers to infants there would be much more awareness about infant reflux in the medical community and babies would be treated much more proactively, because men simply would not be able to cope, so they’d make sure there was a way to fix the problem.
