solids help…again

thanks everyone…i am using beechnut baby food brand.

i am still looking for bread without soy in it to make toast with avacado.

and for some reason i am nervous about the whole meat issue, i dont know why, im worried it would be hard for an MSPI reflux baby to digest?

also, the fact that he couldnt even tolerate carrots gets me worried…so i really dont know what foods to try..i am thinking about potatoes, i think we may be safe with those.

i will have to wait with the watermelon until summer…i havent seen any around here cause its the middle of winter..

also, are things like berries okay? i heard berries are a big allergen and to avoid them before a year old?

Natalia, can you get a blender, hand blender, or magic bullet and make your own baby foods? It’s so easy and tastes really yummy. I did it with Sarah, but got frustrated that Hailey wouldn’t eat anything, and eventually we skipped the spoon feeding stage altogether, but that’s another issue.

If you’re able to try to make some on your own (which is super easy and then you know exactly what’s in it) then you can start with straightforward ones like, butternut squash (which most kids love), sweet potato (yum!), avacado, and you can boil your own meats, like chicken, beef etc. Then based on what he likes you can make your own combinations like potato and chicken, etc.

The great thing about making it yourself other than the obvious, is that you can play around with the texture. You can add more water to make it thinner, or keep it thicker, or chunkier based on what he likes and does the best with. The thing I don’t like about mashing foods for kids with feeding issues, reflux, gagging or whatever, is that the texture is inconsistent. That means that one bite may be thick, the other thin, one smooth, the other with a lump, and that can be confusing or even scary to kids who are apprehensive about eating.

You said that he loves cherios, and it’s probably because of the hard texture. Some people say that hard textures give more feedback and control in the mouth then mushy textures that slip all over the place and are harder to maneuvre. Of course that depends on the baby- some babies are the other way around.

The magic bullet is great for baby food making if you have one! We borrowed one, but as I said, we skipped that stage with Hailey.

As for fruit, I would personally stay away from berries. Our ped said they were okay and we’ve given them to Hailey. In fact, she used to go nuts for strawberries (by her standards). We’ve more recently noticed an association between berries and reflux and nightwakings with her, and funny thing is that she might have noticed it too, because she suddenly stopped eating the berries.

Good luck, and try not to get discouraged. Some kids take longer to get the hang of it then others.

Laura, Ari is so cute! Such a big boy already!

About meat, for Sarah, I always used to like to get a Kosher chicken and boil it up in a soup (with carrots, potatoes, whatever). Then it comes out SO tender, and you can blend it up alone or with whatever vegetables you put in the soup. You use the soup itself to pour back into the puree to thin it out.

i have a question..

is the chicken nuggets o.k for them? i found some organic ones that are gluten free @ the natural food store.. they are for kids ..and you bake them. i gave one to shane last night and he ate it while walking around in his walker.. the whole thing! but i didnt know if its o.k for him to digest .. and if any of you guys have done them this early.

yep they are right around the corner from my house! its kind of like wild oats.. if you know what that is.. or whole foods market.

its great.. and has soo many foods for kids and people that cant do milk&soy

I could probably read more closely and find out for myself, but I’ll take the easy route…I’ve been reading all about this “avocado and toast” thing. How do I find/make the avocado? Is it already prepared for putting on toast, etc?
