Prilosec Suspension

PPI meds like Prilosec are used mainly to stop or reduce acid production to stop the pain from acid reflux, but they really don’t do much to help with the spitting up or vomitting.

Does he seem to be in less pain since starting this medication?

He may be vomitting more because he is no longer on Reglan. Reglan is used to reduce vomitting, but it can have some scary neurological side effects, so it’s probably good that he is no longer on it. How is his weight gain? If he’s growing and gaining fine then I wouldn’t be too concerned about the vomitting. My son was a huge puker but he still gained weight.

As for when they outgrow reflux, it seems to vary. Both of mine outgrew it at 9 months. I haven’t heard of too many babies outgrowing it earlier than that.

Sounds like the compound also might not have been made well. According to marci-kids there shouldn’t be any added flavours or it will degrade the drug including syrups or sweeteners. It needs to be made with at least 16.8 percent sodium bicarbonate and the concentration should be somewhere between 2-4mg/ml so that each dose has at least 3.5ml of suspension to ensure enough buffer to protect the drug. Also, it needs to be shaken really well to get all the sediment (buffer) off the bottom and refrigerated in two week doses maximum. You might want to look into zegerid and try that- it’s basically a stable prilosec suspension.

Might he be vomitting more since he was previously on reglan?
