InactiveMy 7 week old son started off 3 weeks ago on Zantec which did nothing so his doctor prescribed Prevacid. I got the prescrption filled before checking this site and ended up with the compounded solution with strawberry flavoring and a 2 month supply of it.

He is taking 1.1 ML twice a day (he is about 11 pounds) for just over 12 days now. It does seem to be helping but he still seems pretty uncomfortable and has trouble sleeping.
He has his 2-month check-up next week so while I am there I am going to request a new prescription. So I had a few questions for the experts here

1. – Can I still get the compounded solution if I have her write the prescription into 2-week supplies? He takes it so easily which is why I would love to stick with this if I could.
2. – Is 1.1 ML twice a day enough to make a difference? I checked the Marci-kids site but they don’t have the dosage for the compounded solutions.
3. – Or should I ask for the solutabs…can those be given to an infant?
Sorry for so many questions but I am still trying to learn all I can about GERD…this forum is a life saver!
THANKS!

InactivePersonally I’d never use the compounded version because it seems that so many people have problems getting it compounded properly, and even a two week supply doesn’t always work. Lori (one of our senior memebers) knows a lot about this and explains it well. I don’t remember the exact details but based on what she says I’d probably not even try compounded Prevacid.
I used the solutabs for my little guy. I found them to be very easy to administer and they taste good so I think most babies would take it fine.
Be sure to check out Laura’s intro (stickied in the Introduce Yourself Forum). It has lots of valuable information includind a Prevacid 101 link which may answer some of your questions.
Good luck with his appointment. I’d take along some information from marci-kids. It may help you get a high enough dose.

InactiveHi- solutabs can be used with v young babies quite easily. we disolved it with a tiny bit of water, draw it in a syringe, and administer in back cheek and if needed add more water in the syringe until all the beads are gone . difficult to explain if you have never seen the solutabs before, but for me it is easiest form to admisnister (and I have tried all of them !) taste yummy too!
I am sure some of the lovely ladies on this board will explain it better than I do

KeymasterI would actually try the compound, but I would get the doctor (ask her/him to PLEASE HUMOUR YOU
) to write it out EXACTLY how you want it and then ask the pharmacist for a print out of EXACTLY what’s in it when you get it (tell them to humour you & say your baby has a medical condition where each ingredient is VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW
) here’s a post compounding from lori: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7855&a mp;TPN=1
then, if that didn’t work I’d go for caracream
(go to Prevacid 101 for this)
then I’d ask for solutabs- again in Prevacid 101 how to administer them

Inactivehow many mg/ml is the solution? if you know that, then you can look on the marci-kids site and look at how many mg the recommend for his body weight. the solution should be between 2 mg/ml and 4mg/ml. nataliachick72007-3-22 11:15:39

InactiveThanks for all of the tips…his current meds are 3mg/ml…so I guess that means he is getting about 6.6mg/day since he gets 1.1ml twice a day???
I got a little confused on the Marci-Kids site – on the calculator which has the dosage for the solutabs it shows he could have 18 to 24mg per day. But on the chart that is by age it shows 1.5 to 1.75mg 3 times a day which is a total of about 4.5…. am I reading that wrong? I am a bit sleep deprived so my brain is not working the way it used to

Inactiveits 1.5 to 1.75 mg divided by (/) kg-which is his weight. so its still 18 to 24 mg per day. i cant imagine that 6.6 mg would help him very much.

InactiveI agree with the others. Making a prevacid compound properly is very difficult. I’m surprised your lo takes it so well… when it’s made correctly it tastes pretty yucky. Are you getting it flavoured? It’s important to get it made with 16.8 percent sodium bicarbonate because you’re giving small doses. Each dose needs to be at least 3.5ml per dose to ensure enough buffer. Also it should be made without ANY flavourings of any kind- including sweet syrup, simple syrup, stevia powder, etc. And then of course 2 week doses, maximum. Also his dose sounds very low.
