InactiveOK ladies, I need some advice. I’ve been lurking around here for nearly a
year, and thought I was even done, but have returned as we are still not
sleeping well.
My ds turned one last weekend. He was/is a silent refluxer, and went
through a rough patch starting around 6 weeks. We had him on Zantac,
then Zegerid, and finally weaned him off that about 2 months ago (need
to update my sig). His main symptom is poor sleep. He was at one point
waking every hour to nurse, and after some gentle sleep training is now
only waking 2-4 times per night. On good nights he wakes up and only
makes noises until I come feed him. On bad nights, he wakes up
screaming. Last night was one of those nights. I had given him some
yogurt that morning, and he was as far as I could tell refluxing again at
night, and required Mylanta before I could get him back down, after
which he did a 4-hour stretch (good, for him).
I did TED for about 2 months, had a soy slip up, tried again, and never
seemed to get the same results, so gave it up. He occasionally takes
Good Start formula, but otherwise I haven’t given him much dairy. He is
underweight, so in the last couple of weeks I have tried both tofu and
yogurt, and each time he had bad nights. After the tofu he even spit up
some during the day, rare for him.
So finally to my question! If nightwaking is really the only symptom he
has (no skin, respiratory, or bowel issues), is it likely that he is dairy/soy
intolerant? I have a feeling I know the answer, and that I will need to go
dairy/soy free again, but am still wanting some input.

InactiveI’m wondering why he’s underweight. If he’s not throwing up, then he’s not taking in enough to gain weight steadily. Are you sure he’s not eating less than he needs because he still has reflux pain?
That (his underweight), his night wakings, and the fact that he slept 4 hours after a dose of Mylanta makes me suspect the he still needs to be on a PPI.

InactiveI’m personally not worried about his weight–he is the same weight my
dd was at this age, and they are both very tall…the doc is just concerned
(and on the conservative side) bec. he went from 50th, to 25th to 10th
percentile at his last 3 visits. But he was born at 9 lbs 5 oz (two weeks
early), and dd was 9-15, so they started out rather big, and then tapered
off. He is just not that into solids. He is very cautious, putting things in
him mouth now, but spitting out probaby 80%, and I’m trying not to push
him–he is a self feeder, and usually flat out refuses anything by spoon.
I understand what you both feel about the PPI, but honestly, after a while
it didn’t make a bit of difference in how well he slept, and I didn’t feel it
was worth medicating him 3xs a day when he slept the same either way.
(He was on the max Marci kids dose, and I didn’t want to go higher). I’ve
recently started giving him Zantac again at bedtime, and have considered
giving him one dose of Zegerid instead (we have some leftover). Does
anyone know the efficacy of that? He is, and has nearly always been, fine
during the day.

Inactivei would try pepcid complete at night. zantac did nothing for my son. the pepcid is over the counter, dr phillips gave me directions. also the h2 blocker has to be 4 hours apart from a PPI

Keymasteryes I think nightwaking can be a sign of mspi
do a search for posts by lovemysophia
she tells how she finally put it together at about the same age your son is & she cut out all milk & soy and sleep improved a LOT

InactiveLaura, I think many of her posts might be missing. There is a big gap
between 11/04 and 8/05, and then a post mentioning hackers? I’m
feeling more and more like I’ll have to settle in for a few weeks dairy/soy
free.
I’ve been contemplating trying the Pepcid complete–Natalia, do you
think it would be a better idea than a single dose of Zegerid? I restarted
the Zantac about 5 nights ago, and have seen an improvement. He has
had several nights with 5 hour stretches in the beginning of the night,
and even a night where he only woke up twice. I think much of the time
he wakes out of habit, and because I feed him, I reinforce that. I don’t
begrudge him the calories at this point though, and don’t even mind
twice a night. It’s rare that he wakes up crying though, so it’s pretty
apparent when he is hurting. Even in those instances it only takes 5
minutes to nurse him back down. oh, he’s up…

Inactivei dont know if pepcid would be more beneficial then a single dose of zegerid, but i can tell you that pepcid complete (not just regular pepcid) is more effective than just zantac. the complete is an acid reducer (similair to zantac, but contains famotidine instead) plus an antacid ( like mylanta) in one.

InactiveLaura, thanks for taking the time to put those links together, they are
helpful. He had another good night last night, only woke twice. I think I’ll
wait one more night, and then challenge the dairy again before I decide. If
he reacts, I’ll probably wait several months before trying again.
I know I sound like such a wimp about going off dairy, but I did the TED for
what felt like such a long time, and was neither eating nor sleeping, and
really hit a low point that I’m trying to avoid again. I know there are
mommies out there who having been living without for much longer…

InactiveI think we’ll try the Pepcid complete tonight, thanks. Last night I gave
Zantac at bedtime, and then Mylanta when he woke at 3. Unfortunately, the
other side effect of the nightfeeding is that he woke early at 6, completely
soaked, then proceeded to wake dd up.
What dose do you give, and how much does your LO weigh?

Inactivei dunno jsut a thought….you can always try neocate. my son was like a different child when i got him off of alimentum and switched to neocate (which the ped said were basically the same….umm so not true!)

InactiveHe seems to tolerate the Goodstart well enough (I work, so he gets about
4-6 bottles of it per week), but I wonder if he can’t eat dairy directly, should
I avoid the protein in ALL of it’s forms…
