InactiveIn your experience, at what age does a baby usually grows out of acid reflux ? I’m REALLY anxious to know. I’m counting the days until my daughter grows out of it.
Thanks for your help again. Looking forward to hearing from you.

InactiveI’m sorry to say this, but I don’t think there’s a magic age. Our ped GI said that reflux peaks at 4 months. Then most kids will outgrow it by 9-12 months if it’s due to an immature LES. The bulk of the remainder have symptoms caused by allergies or intolerances. When due to food intolerances due to an immature GI system, most outgrow it somewhere into their second year. So over 95 percent have outgrow it by age 2, with most kids outgrowing it by age 1. Then 2-3 percent outgrow it by age 3, and the remainder have symptoms that they don’t outgrow.
That’s just my docs comments though.
My personal opinion is just to try to get the situation as well controlled as possible, and then to try to enjoy your little one as much as you can for everything other than the reflux. We spent the first year of Hailey’s like desperately waiting for her to outgrow it and missed so much in the meantime. When I stopped obsessing about why and when, things got a lot better.
Hailey is almost 2 and we’re still dealing with things, and I know that must really depress and scare you, but like I said, we’re the exception (less than 5 percent) not the rule. Your dd will outgrow it, I’m sure. Hang in there.

Inactivemy son is almost 11 months and now requires an antacid at bedtime, along with a PPI, so it has NOT gotten ANY better at this point, though his pain is well controlled with the meds.nataliachick72007-4-3 8:48:4

Inactivewell, my DS is a little over 2 years and we are still struggling with it. He is TONS better than when he was an infant but still is on a good dose of a PPI and requires Mylanta at bedtime and usually once during the night. Like Lori said though, this is not the norm. Most of the moms that were on this board when I first joined have looong moved on. I know it is so hard but just try to take it day to day. I wished away Seth’s infancy because of the reflux and I wish now that I could have seen beyond it and enjoyed what few good days there were. Our GI has always told us that they outgrow it around 27-29 lbs. Well, Seth is right there now, so I am anxiously waiting but I really do think it varies from child to child.

InactiveBryce is almost 16 months now, and still battling reflux, although it has seemed to get better the last few weeks. I have seen quite a few babies that have outgrown it around 9 -12 months.
Good luck. How old is your baby?

InactiveOkay guys, way to scare the pants off her!

Isabelle, I think the point that Tiffany made is a good one. Most kids outgrow it, and their moms move on from these kinds of forums. Those of us who are around here, for the most part, are still struggling through issues. I’ve been around here for 1.5 years and seen most (probably nearly all) of the moms move on because their kids got better, and just a few of us stay (some because our kids are still dealing with reflux, others because we’re hopelessly addicted, or both!). Christine (ndrose) had both her kids outgrow it at 9 months, Laura (hellbennt) had Jonah outgrow it during his first year (I can’t remember when), Therese (evergreenie) has Alana off meds, Justice’s mom has Justice off meds (and I think Luke, her older son outgrew it at 9 months)- these are just some of the moms who are still on here even though their kids have outgrown it.
If you need to feel better, read the hip hip hooray forum! Honestly, it does get better. Hang in there.

InactiveMy two both outgrew it at 9 months.
So, some babies do outgrow it before a year. I’m one of those who has stuck around the board, but like Lori said many moms leave us once their babies are reflux free so you don’t here as much about those babies anymore.April 3, 2007 at 1:38 pm #29408Anonymous
InactiveIsabelle,
Hang in there. The main thing to do is enjoy your little one. Find yourself a good Ped GI and insist on meds to help ease the pain. The meds will not make her spitup less but it will help control the acid and pain that goes with it. One thing to make sure of is to watch her weight. As children grow they outgrow their medicine doses very quickly. Try to keep her propped up and it’s okay to even have her sleep in her swing at night/naps. Rice cereal in bottles helps control the spitup for some babies.
Remember that it does get better and to try to keep your patience. My son went for a time when he would only eat in his sleep because of the pain. As soon as he woke up he would stop eating. THe key it seems is to get the right formula/milk and medicine combo. In addition to Reflux, some babies have issues processing milk and soy.
This board is great for info. Make sure to check back often and ask lots of questions. I became a silent reflux expert just from this site.
Hang in there. janet

InactiveHi Isabelle
We are currently med free (for about 9 days) and things are going OK so far. Alana was also a prem (5 weeks early) so by corrected age we are weaning around 7 1/2 to 8 months. I decided to do this because I noticed that when Alana was sick, teething etc over the last month there was no flair in her reflux symptoms (there had been previous to this) so I thought what the heck

There seems so much varibility. I think the main things is to get the reflux controlled as early as you can to prevent any secondary problems. Then enjoy your little one and worry about weaning from meds when you feel the time is right

Once Alana’s reflux was controlled by meds she was an absolute darling…the only bugger was giving the meds…so things will get better with the right treatment and you probably won’t worry so much about the “outgrowing it” (if you know what I mean).
Hang in there mate

InactiveI was able to take both of my boys off meds at 9 months, but they were truly reflux free at 12 months. I can every now and then hear Justice reflux, but it doesn’t seem to bother him. I tryed taking my oldest son off meds. at 6 months, 8 months, and was finally successful at 9 months. It is diff for every baby, but it does seem that 9 to 12 months is when most babies outgrow it. My oldest sons ped gi said 9 months is the magic age. They all say diff things though you know. Justice’smom2007-4-4 1:27:21

InactiveMy daughter has been med free for about 2 months. We stopped he meds at 6 months just to see how she would do with them and she was fine. However we did continue the Alimentum out of fear that regular formula would be to hard on her stomach.
We are currently transitioning her to Good Start, she is currently taking half alimentum and half goodstart and is doing pretty well with it.
Good Luck! I hope your baby outgrows this early……..
