InactiveCan’t believe I’m asking this, but I’m at a loss here. Ben has super sensitive skin. His cheeks and chin are almost always red and I’ve wondered if it isn’t eczema, or some intolerance, etc. However, the Ped. says no to eczema and I don’t really think it is either, as there are days when it looks totally fine and then by the evening it’s red again. I don’t think it’s an intolerance either, for the same reasons (and I’ve tracked his food and can find no pattern, etc.). But he is a drooling machine and will have his hands in his mouth alot on bad reflux days, so I’m thinking this is it.
Here’s my problem. Now that we’ve started solids, I need to wipe/clean his face after eating, but everything I’ve tried makes his face looks worse! When it was just cereal, I would just wipe it off, and actually I think the residual oatmeal helped a little, but now that it’s some veggies and fruits, I can’t do this, as it irritates the skin. But using soap and water or even just water, really dries it out.
Any ideas???

InactiveMaybe put a thin layer of vaseline (or that stuff Laura reccommends – is it unpatroleum?) around his mouth, on his chin and cheeks before you feed him. Maybe that would prevent the food from irritating him and it may make it easier to wipe the food off gently without irritating his skin.

InactiveI use a product called Barriere cream, which is a 20% silicone cream, for my kids (they are redheads and have very sensitive skin too). It essentially creates a breathable barrier, that isn’t easily washed off, so it protects the skin from irritants and irritation from frequent washing. As a pharmacist, I often recommend it for babies and people who have to wash their hands frequently at their job. I don’t know if you can get the exact same cream in the US, since it is made by a Canadian company called Wellskin, but there is likely something very similar available. I would ask your pharmacist to recommend something – either a silicone based cream, or other type of barrier forming cream, that is suitable for sensitive skin.

InactiveAdriana gets this sometimes too, especially with a change in temp. I use Aquaphor. You can get it anywhere. Also, I noticed that certain laundry detergent and fabric softner make it worse. I use dreft and downy Free. It could be the washcloth you use to clean his face????

InactiveI use generic “free and clear” laundry detergent, Reidun and I both react to frag in dreft. Fabric softner is a big no no in our family.
Has your child been tested for allergies? Perhaps it is something in the air?

InactiveNaomi,
Brianna skin is that way sometimes too..mostly when she is drooling with teething the saliva irritates her skin. This is what I found that works wonders Aveeno baby wash…I can’t remember what it is called, but the top is navy blue and it says helps babies even with excema. I use the babywash and the cream, and since then, the irritation has disappeared for the most part, and if it does come back…a few nights with the cream on her face and it is gone. Maybe worth a try.

InactiveOh yeah, the Aveeno baby lotion is a must around here! Ben is so used to me using it on him, he actually askes me to put cream on his “cheekies”!

For laundry, I use Baby Soft detergent and Bounce Free dryer sheets.
