InactiveThanks so much to everyone! I’m off to read those links…

InactiveSo I have questions about the Mylanta. How exactly should I use it? Give it before or after feedings? Since she starts eating and then fusses, I’m not sure when would be best. How long does it work for? How often can I give it? I will be asking the ped about it on Monday as well.
I’ve been reading a ton of links today, and I think I will be asking the dr. Monday about prescribing Zegerid. I’m wondering how much stuff I’ll need to print out and bring with me to the appt. 🙂 Hopefully I will have an informed dr. who will do what is best. Or maybe just refer me to a Pediatric GI?

InactiveHi and welcome
With the mylanta I would give it before feeding so it coats the eosophagus on the way down..maybe a ml or so. If she is still in pain during or after feeding you could then give another ml. Maybe 4 x per day…the worst thing that will happen is loose stools which will give you an idea to reduce the amount.
I just read your other post…OK maybe save it for the afo and night feedings if you find mornings are OK.
You could also give gaviscon a go? I think in the US it has aluminium in it…there was a recent post on it if you want to read more about it

InactiveThis is something I sent to Myles’ doctor. I think it helped to sway her because when she finally agreed to the marci-kids’ dose she said something like, “Well, these are non-toxic meds, so let’s give it a try.”
http://www.marci-kids.com/pdfs/dosingppis.pdf
I also printed out the dosing charts from marci kids and some of their general information about PPI meds and the list of research studies.
Good luck on Monday!

InactiveI think you mentioned that you are breastfeeding, right? And you also mentioned that sometimes your little one seems fine and others not? If so, you may want to look into your diet. There could be some foods that cause more problems – dairy/soy, eggs, nuts, beef, etc. Just a thought!

InactiveAbby had blood in her diaper today. A dime size amount in one, and a few flecks in another. I feel so bad for her! I called the on call dr. and she said Abby might have a milk allergy and she wants me to eliminate all dairy from my diet.
Sooo.. I’ve read through the MSPI thread, but what I’m really looking for is a list of things that contain dairy. Stuff I didn’t think of, etc. Do eggs count as dairy? I know there’s a lot of other stuff that she could be allergic to, including eggs, but I am going to try the dairy elimination first, because I was allergic to milk when I was a baby. I had to be put on soy formula. My mom said after that I was fine, so I’m wondering if that is the same thing that’s wrong with Abby.

Keymasteryou probably want to cut out all milk and soy- including hidden soy- there is a list of ingredients- go look at the ‘main’ maspi page- it’s stickied in the mspi forum

InactiveI’m not sure if by now your baby is already on meds. Anyway, we used prevacid pkts for my first son and it did no good. The biggest reason is that he was never on a high enough dose. Justice was also put on the prevacid pkts and they never did him any good either. A guy from marci-kids basically explained to me that since you have to split the dose the pkts are pretty worthless because you would basically have to count out all the beads and make sure each dose gets the same amt. of beads. I’m pretty sure they recommend the solutabs. With Justice we eventually started using Zegerid. It was amazing the diff. it made in him. He became a truly happy baby and would actually eat without pulling on me and moving all around. It never helped with his sleep, but I don’t think there is a guarentee that any of them will help with the sleep. I tell everyone that because it can be a huge let down. I always think it’s best to be prepared for the worst. That way if your baby does start to sleep better it will be a great suprise. Also, the reflux could be completly due to the allergy since you said you found blood in the stool. I also did and am still doing dairy free. You might want to also think about cutting out all beef also. Justice and I both and many babies for that matter react to anything from a cow. Oh, and rice milk is a great milk sub. I use the vanilla kind to cook with and for my cereal. I can’t tell a diff. Neither can my very picky husband. Good luck.

InactiveWhen we talk about dairy, we are usually talking about milk products, not eggs. But you might also want to cut out eggs at first. If symptoms of intolerance go away, I would try reintroducing it. I really recommend getting Cybele Pascal’s book “The Whole Foods Allergy Cookbook.” It was like my bible in the beginning. The link to it is below, I wrote a glowing review for it on Amazon. It has way more than just recipes!

InactiveThe recent law change requiring companies to list allergens has been really helpful, but you still have to check labels pretty carefully. I’ve been doing this with Kaelyn for over a year, and I still make mistakes from time to time.

This post has a link to lots of “safe” foods.

I also cut and pasted the part about what to avoid:
And here’s a list of ingredients to avoid while on a milk free diet:

Caseinates (in all forms)
Cheese
Cream
Cottage cheese
Curds
Custard
Ghee
Half & Half
Lactalbumin
Lactalbumin phosphate
Lactoferrin
Lactulose
Milk (in all forms including condensed, derivative, dry, evaporated, goat’smilk, and milk for other animals, low-fat, malted, milkfat, non-fat, powder, protein, skimmed, solids, whole).
Nougat
Naturlose (sweetener derived from whey)
Pudding
Rennet casein
Sour cream
Sour cream solids
Sour milk solids
Tagatose (sweetener derived from whey)
Whey (in all forms)
YogurtAccording to FAAN, These products DO NOT contain milk:
Calcium Lactate

Cocoa Butter
Cream of Tarter
Lactic Acid (however, lactic acid starter culture may contain milk)

InactiveThanks guys. We just got back from the dr. and it was not a good visit.
My regular pediatrician wasn’t there so we had to see another doc. His whole demeanor the entire time we are there is basically “What are you doing here?” He says that blood in the stool is common and you only need to worry if it happens often. Basically he stood there like he didn’t know why we came in. So I told him about her reflux diagnosis, how she eats, how she strains when she poos, and he basically says all babies strain and it sometimes causes blood. I told him about the milk allergy thing that my dr. had indicated, and he then gives me the speech about how all babies fuss and that regardless of what we do most of the time they grow out of it at 3 months.
What the? So my child screams bloody murder every night and fights to eat, but since she’s gaining weight, we should just let her suffer until she ‘grows out of it’? He says “She looks healthy”. Just cause she wasn’t screaming in the office? Because her color looked normal? How is that an indication of what is going on in her little tummy? What a jerk of a doctor. He basically told me it was ok for her to be in pain and that she would grow out of it.
I finally told him to at least look at her to see if there were fissures in her rectum and he did find fissures on her, and told us to use Vaseline on every diaper change. Some of the girls on another board said their dr. told them the same thing and after a week of doing so their babies were fine. ?
I really didn’t like him. I am going to call my ped in the morning and talk to her more about it.
The question is, do I forge ahead with the eliminating all dairy thing? I feel like we are never going to figure out what is wrong, and my poor baby is going to be in pain forever. 🙁

InactiveArggg.
How frustrating! I can’t stand it when doctors assume a baby is fine because they are gaining weight. My babies both gained fine but they were miserable and feeding them was an ordeal. My first refluxer suffered for months.
Fortunately I found this site when I had my second reflux baby and I made sure I got him on a good dose of Prevacid and once I did things turned around. It was not easy to get him on that high PPI dose, but I persisted and would not give up until he was pain free.I think I’d try to follow up with your regular ped. Didn’t he say something about trying aother medication if the Zantac wasn’t working? I’d try to get a PPI prescription from him and if that doesn’t work maybe try your family doctor. Many of us have had better luck with family docs. (Myles’ doctor is a family physician). I think it’s because family docs see adult patients with reflux all the time so they are more familiar with reflux meds and they seem to be more empathetic about how painful it is; probably because their adult patients can tell them how much it hurts. Peds too often see fussiness or irritabilty as nothing more than colic.
Be sure to print out the marci-kids information and maybe fax it to your ped before you even talk to him. Include a cover letter describing your baby’s symptoms and requesting to please be allowed to try Prevacid or Zegerid since Zantac is not helping. Then call the office, tell them you sent a fax for Dr. so and so, and ask them to have him call you. This is what I did with Myles’ doctor and it did work for us.
So, I’d try your ped first, family doctor next, and if all else fails make an appointment with a Ped. Gi. Maybe make an appointment now. You can always cancel if you get things worked out in the meantime.
Good luck and don’t give up.

InactiveI’d also go ahead with cutting out the dairy. Give it a couple of weeks, and if you don’t see any improvement you can start adding it back in slowly. That doctor today sounds like a jerk!

InactiveDitto to everything Christine and Kim said. It is so frustrating when these Drs just don’t listen and don’t understand
. Many of us have heard the same old same old…so you are not alone. Just remember you don’t have to be satisfied with this second rate treatment…you are mummy, your instincts are right….follow them and don’t be put of by these types. BTW…it was my husbands family dr who finally prescribed the right meds and dose…not my pead…her approach was “she’ll just grow out of it”…bugger that…she might (and now thankfully it seems like she has
) but both of us will be start raving mad by then (OK well I am…but not because of her reflux…because of my dh
). hang in there mate. -
