InactiveHey everyone, I am really, really new to this reflux business with my son and I’m trying to learn as much about it as I can. I was holding Bryce earlier and he turned bright red, was grunting and turning his head from side to side, rolling his eyes all around. It scared the mess out of my husband and I! Does anyone know anything about this?

InactiveIt could be Sandifer’s syndrome. It is fairly common in reflux infants, and is a mechanism that their body uses to deal with and react to the intense pain. Please read the following posts for more info.

it’s symptoms like back arching, stiffening a leg, twisting the head in one direction, & can also include seizure type episodes…
i always used the symptoms as a barometer- as we got the meds figured out, the symptoms pretty much disappeared…

InactiveYes, it could be Sandifer’s, like the others said.
It could also be some of the potential neurological effects from the reglan. (I posted about this in my reply to your other thread). I don’t know too much about what the signs look like, but I do know that reglan has the potential to cause neurological side effects while on the med for some babies. If you don’t know about this already, and especially if the signs just started since taking the reglan, I would talk to your ped about it as soon as possible.

InactiveHere’s a link from marci-kids site talking about some of the strange posturing that can occur. Sandifer’s is a pain reaction to the acid reflux. Acute dystonic reactions are neurological side effects from certain drugs, like reglan, in case you weren’t aware of this already.

InactiveOur child rolls head side to side and eyes roll backward, plus arm flaps sometimes hitting in the face/head during episodes. I’m not a doctor or anything so nothing substitutes in any way for medical advice. What I’ve heard is: head rolling can be self-soothing (some times ear aches, excess wax buildup, etc.) behavior for some infants; eyes are developing and some show signs of REM sleep as they’re falling asleep. However, after reviewing video footage and examination, our pediatrician had us referred to pediatric neurology and EEG and MRI tests completed. Medication was initiated and immediately the episodes stopped — except, and not knowing it was very worrisome at first — apparently if the child is under the weather / ill, the seizure threshhold is lower and so episodes may occur more frequently until the illness subsides. So, looks like in our case could be seizures and Sandifers.
