InactiveBackground:
Abby is 8 weeks old. Diagnosed with reflux at 3 weeks and put on .9ml Zantac 2x a day, it seemed to help. At almost 6 weeks she started really fussing again and I definitely knew the Zantac had previously helped. Let the ped know, was told to do Zantac 1ml 2x a day. Three days later found blood in her diaper, and went back to the ped. Upped the Zantac to 1ml 3x a day, and was told to go off dairy.
I’ve been off Dairy since the 9th and have been doing 1ml 3x a day of the Zantac. Last week my baby was AWESOME. She seemed happy and wasn’t irritable, and she slept during the day and night and everything! But again today she has started the only eat for 30 seconds thing, the unconsoleable crying, etc.
I was planning on talking to them on her appt which is in two weeks, but I think I need to make a call in the morning. I’m going to ask for a PPI, do you think that is the right idea?
Am I moving in the right direction? It just seems like 2 steps forward, 3 back, 2 steps forward, 2 back, etc. I just want her to be a happy baby and not hurt. Today she screamed so loud and so high it sounded so sad. If her throat wasn’t already sore from the reflux I would think all that screaming would make it sore.
For med info, she’s 12 pounds now I believe.

InactiveIf the Zantac helped, a PPI will probably give her more relief – although it can take up to 2 weeks for the PPI to *kick in* so you may ask if you can give the Zantac in addition to the new PPI for 2 weeks and then stop the Zantac. It is unbelievable, but it really took us 2 weeks. The step dance you are doing: 2 forward, one back, 1 forward, 2 back, that is the dance Carson and I have been doing also. This reflux is very unpredictable. I think their little GI tracts are so touchy and anything can set them off.
Carson gets really bad when he has an ear infection/fluid/or really any little virus. Although, his reflux flares up days before the docs can tell me what is going on (if it is ears, etc).
I really hope Abby gets better soon! You may wish to start documenting the different things you are doing so you can tell what worked and what didn’t. When I have a little pitty party, I can grab one of Carson’s old notebooks where I keep his daily meds/etc and I can see that we are moving forward. Gives me a little hope on a bad day!

InactivePerhaps you should omit soy from your diet? Unfortunately, easier said than done, but many babies who have intolerances to milk, also have it to soy. You may want to look at the MSPI (Milk Soy Protein Intolerance) section in this board. I have a psoting in the TED (Total Elimination Diet) section titled “Reidun’s Story and Gathered Information” that you may want to look at. Best of luck!

Inactivei agree with eliminating soy and asking for a PPI. it sounds like the zantac isnt doing much for her. i would read up on PPI’s at marci-kids.com. good luck!

InactiveZantac is a very weight sensitive drug. So it’s not uncommon for babies to get some intial relief but then quickly outgrow their dose, and sadly many times they plateau on it so that even with dosage increases they can’t get any relief.
I’d definitely ask for a PPI medication like Prevacid or Zegerid. You can read about these meds at http://www.marci-kids.com
Also, like the others mentioned many babies who are intolerant to dairy are also intolerant to soy.

InactiveI would also recommend a ppi. Do all the research you can before you go and be prepared that your dr. will say it is not fda approved. Be prepared to fight just in case you have to, but I hope for you it is goes so amazingly easy.

there’s a section there about breastfeeding you reflux baby
there are links to help you figure out the maximim zantac for her weight (my guess is she needs more)
there is a Prevacid 101 link (talks about more than just prevacid
)there’s a mspi link

InactiveHi there. I’m sorry that you’re having a hard time with your little one. I also had a difficult time feeding Hailey, and I found that taking some video footage to show the docs what I was talking about was helpful. I also tried to feed her there, so that they could see firsthand.
The others have already given you lots of useful information. Your situation sounds similar to what Hailey was like in the early months. I would go for a PPI, like the others said.
Good luck.
