InactiveLaura, Kaelyn did the same sort of thing. She was taking 3 or 4 bottles a day at that point (with only 4 oz each) and she refused most purees. If I could get one jar of food into her over the course of a day, it was an event. She would eat finger foods fairly happily, but it was mostly just puffs, and like you said, there’s no real nutritional value to that. That lasted until she was around a year (maybe 14 months). Then she just suddenly decided that she wanted to eat more and she started adding more food to her diet. She dropped to the fifth percentile during that time and has gone back up to the 25th now and the 90th for height. Her ped says that he thinks she’s just genetically designed to be long and lean.
Alex is the opposite. She’ll eat 2 jars of food at a sitting, three times a day, but she flat out refuses all finger foods, or anything with texture. I just keep offering, hoping that she’ll start wanting them soon.
So, no advice, just empathy.
Also, our day care really pushed for no bottles after they turned one. We were fortunate that summer break started right around her first birthday. By the time she went back to daycare, she was down to two bottles a day and I did them first thing in the morning and right before bed so daycare wasn’t involved.

InactiveIn all truthfullness even when Isaac’s reflux was under control he never ate. He like Ari just never seemed to be hungry for solids up until recently. Isaac just wanted to drink and he really never drank alot but just enough to get by. We also had a problem getting him interested in the cup. We introduced it at 4 months (i think) and he looked so disgusted every time i offered it to him. So being overly worried as it was I totally thought he would be 12 yrs old and not drinking out of a cup. Then at 10 months old all of the sudden all Isaac would drink out of was a straw cup
I think you have been given great advice and I know you always give out great advice so I am sure you will know what to do. I am glad that you felt like you could post this here even though Ari doesn’t have reflux-I love hearing about the healthy babies too!April 21, 2007 at 7:44 pm #31136Anonymous
InactiveLaura – just a gut feeling says it is his age and *he will eat when he is hungry* but, then again, how long do you let that go?? As he gets more and more teeth, that will help. Sometimes it is easier to get a child to eat for someone else. Maybe when you go back to work, he will see the other children eating and he will eat also?!? Good luck to you and hopefully he will become a better eater b4 July.

InactiveLaura,
Thank you for your sweet words. I think everyone would agree that it was great to be able to be the supportive word for you for a change!

InactiveHi there! Just now seeing this…..
It doesn’t matter, reflux or not, we all hate to see our children not eat!
So, Carter is somewhat similar. He has been our chubbs for a while, but has been loosing weight since January, so I feel your pain. Reflux is resolved for him (sorry for all of you still dealing with this
) but is just not a good eater. We are back to stabilizing so I have a few suggestions that worked for us:1. Pediasure. Not sure if you are ready to brave the milk product at his age, but we did start right at a year (9.5 months gestation) and Carter is handling it fine. If he doesn’t eat well, we give him this and it tastes good, so it is keeping his weight stable for now. I am not sure if Ari will take the bottle, or the sippy yet for that matter, so this may not be a solution, but you could use it to mix cereal with or something, so it is just that added calories for every bite you can get him to take.
2. All the bad foods
. We gave Dylan chicken and smiles and then expected Carter to eat what we were eating. I didn’t want to start bad habits with Carter, but once weight is an issue, all bets are off, so I gave them to him as well and just walked away. Carter will eat them with Dylan especially if Dylan plays a game with him by making silly faces, etc…so the two of them end up eating more. I also get those grahm cracker sticks, and the ritz sticks, etc…easy to pick up foods that taste good.3. I ignore him. I put food on the tray and watch from a distance. Carter chokes a lot, so I can’t totally ignore him (had to pull over to do the hymlick sp? last saturday, fun, fun…), but I can totally not leave him on display. That does work from time to time.
I am sure you have done all of these already, but maybe something will help.
Hang in there!!!!!

KeymasterUpdate:
Well Ari is fast approaching 11 months old and he FINALLY is eating, whoohoo!!!
I truly think his was a case of:1) wanting to do it himself and not having the coordination to self-feed any kind of volume of food. well, he still lacks the coordination, lol, but he sure can shovel food in his mouth, lol

2) not really being all that interested in purees. after my post he did get to a point where he would eat a small jar of baby food in a sitting and he sometimes would eat 1/2 a yobaby in a sitting- but it was never consistant. I tried again last night, for the whim of it, and he ate a small jar of peas and a small jar of applesauce, so that’s one big jar, LOL

3) wanting tastier food! this baby loves lomein (probably full of msg

but there was a point where I was just happy to get him to eat!!) and Sunday night MIL made brisket and whoa baby, did he eat the meat, carrots and potatoes like there was no tomorrow
. same goes for my friend’s turkey meatballs. I think this baby just wanted meat & potatoes
! I’ve been mixing ricotta cheese w/ (organic) frozen chopped spinach & putting it w/ pasta & he’s happy- he also likes chicken sausage (‘natural’ from costco) which is made w/ feta & cheese…
there’s a boy in Jonah’s class who’s family owns an Indian restaurant & they had a little end of the year party there for the class & Ari really enjoyed the nan (bread) and the pureed spinach dish & the lentil dish
– the boy’s mother was so happy to see Ari all happy & covered in her food
So…maybe a little tabasco will help Ari eat better? JUST KIDDING!!!! ROTFLMAO

So, while he is not a ‘regular’ eater (at least I don’t think so), he is doing great for HIM
.I want ot thank all of you for letting me go on & on about my non refluxer
!!! You have no idea how you all have helped me!!!

Inactivehi laura! flavor is really key for some kids to be interested in food. while hannah still doesn’t have quite the culinary spirit to eat naan and saag paneer, she loves garlic and spices. i was suprised as anyone…maybe we should give them the chile ice cream from the mexican ice cream place down the street from us…hannah asked me before bed last night “do you really like to eat taboule?”

there are a lot of tips i can give to folks if they run into these issues, specifically with older toddlers. in addition to trying flavors, changing shapes and colors go a long way. i just got some all natural food colors because too many times hannah will ask for purple milk…
hi to everyone else! miss you guys.

InactiveThat’s great Laura!! Ari reminds me of Myles to some degree. While Myles does eat his purees and has always liked them, he really likes meat and potatoes. The boy squeals with pure joy when he hears the word, “meatball”

Did you ever read about tasters and non tasters? Evidently some people have more taste buds than others and so they taste everything. And some people are non tasters. Everything tastes bland to them. My dh is definitely a non taster. Condiments and spices are a MUST for everything he eats. I wonder if Myles and Ari may have few taste buds and that’s why they want tastier, spicier foods. Hmmm…
Anyway, I’m glad to hear he’s eating!!

KeymasterI actually have heard of the theory. In my family, we think that my sister & my father don’t have as many tastebuds because they’re both naturally small/thin people and they don’t get ‘excited’ over food, meaning they feel pretty ‘blah’ about food- they have their favorites, and love sweets, but they don’t LOVE food the way my mother, other sister & I do, LOL! I can salivate just thinking about food

so maybe Ari takes after my sister and my father

InactiveIt’s an interesting theory. I think it can go the other way too. DH loves sweets and eats plenty of them so he’s definitley not disinterested in food, and he eats lots of what he does like, but everything he likes is very spicy. He’ll eat tacos with tons of hot sauce 7 days a week!
I wish I was one of those non-tasters. In fact I read recently that researchers are working on some kind of nasal spray that interferes your sense of taste (or reduces it) in hopes of helping people lose weight. I’ll buy it by the case when it becomes available.

Inactivelaura—-i don’t blame him for not wanting to eat baby food…….they used to say not to season your infants food—–who are they kidding??!!
becky—haven’t seen you around in a while—–i just reclaimed the jewish cookbook you sent me. (my mother has had it for some time at her house)
just in case you two wanted to know, one of the twins just needed an ancestor story for something at church. kevin’s dad brought them a story about their jewish ancestor. (6 generations back) he was a dentist, and his father had been napoleon bonaparte’s personal physician. i thought the story was kind of cool.

InactiveAddy is the same way…the more flavor, the more she likes it!
She’s just like her daddy. Its great to hear Ari is eating better! Yay for him!
