I was wondering with the silent reflux kids–as anyone experienced a child that has a choking episode and stops breathing until you jostle them and suck out the mucus stuff–does anyone have any recommendations??

that happened to my son quite a few times when he was a newborn. its pretty scary, i know. how old is your child? i would try to keep them upright, though it is not always the solution.

I don’t have any advice bc Addy never went through this. How scary that must be. From what I have read on this site and others, it is actually quite common for reflux babies. Hopefully others will post more helpful suggestions like Natalia did since I do not have any. Good luck and I hope your little one gets better!

well we can help you with finding the right medicines and proper dosing of the medicine which might help lessen the congestion?

please let us know the age of baby, weight, current meds & doses and if breast fed or what formula

my daughter is 8 weeks old–the choking breathing thing just started happening last week–it happened 2X

just yesterday it seemed she couldn’t clear her throat so my mom and I turned her over and suctioned her out–very mild episode but it gave me flash back to when she was turning red and arms flailing with no breathing like last Friday

she is on advanced similac and takes zantac 2x daily 1.5mL

originally the ped dr. gave her .2 mL 4x daily but when we went to the GI specialist this Tuesday he upped the dosage to 1.5mL

she is 11 pounds 9 oz.

I would FAX the GI doctor your concerns…

start off w/ a THANK YOU

then state facts

then ask questions

then THANK AGAIN

then follow up w/ a phone call to the office to let them know you faxed something & then follow up again later

dr should know how scary this is!

last Friday, my regular ped dr. got a script for the prevacid (this was the morning with the awful episode; and before I knew it was connected to reflux) so I went to fill the script but the pharmcist said the dosage was for a 2 year old–a whole bunch of calling when around and finally the zantac was settled on–

so this tuesday I saw the specialist and described in detail the episode–he felt comfortable with the zantac but a larger amt.; I have also been putting cereal into her formula which I think has improved the symptoms–

do you feel the prevacid in your experience was more beneficial than the zantac?

thank you for all your time and advice!

the specialist said I could call if any concerns; how long should I give the zantac time to work? in your opinion?

I am just chiming in but definitely push for the Prevacid. Seth has been on it from a very young age and it has been our saving grace . The Zantac did nothing for him. Has a formula change been mentioned? Many reflux babies need special formulas.

i agree. zantac did nothing for my son. it wasnt unitl he was put on prevacid at 3 months old that things really turned around. your pharmacist may not be up to date with the latest research. perhaps you can go to marci-kids.com and read up on PPI’s in infants and share the info. is your baby in pain or irritbale during/after feedings?

That happened to my 7 month old recently, she had been on axid since 2 months. Now we are on prevacid and knock on wood…she hasn’t choked again. I found her in her crib that morning blue and couldn’t breathe. Really push for the prevacid. I had her on 15mg for 3 weeks and she was still choking…so I went to see the pedi and begged for 30 mg, she is on that now and it has only been a week and I can tell a big difference. Good luck! That was the scariest thing even, I didn’t sleep for a while after that happened. Thoughts and prayers with you!

she has been a really easy baby until last Friday with the choking episode–

sleeps good, healthy appetite, hollers when you take the bottle from her–regular BM’s

it is almost as if her body doesn’t know what to do when she has some of the formula come back up especially if it has been partially digested and has acid in it

you may have a point with the pharmacist but he was being caution and at the time; my regular ped dr. didn’t call me back and never checked on Leah and it has been over a week–

my regular ped dr. got the prevacid script from a GI specialist but didn’t tell me this~

I have a well check up with my regular ped group and will discuss the prevacid with the dr.–

Natalia: what symptoms did your son exhibit?

Laura: your resource was wonderful; it was one of the first things I read last night– 🙂

I wish my reg. ped dr. had talked to me to ease my apprehension about the prevacid

Hi, Zantac worked for Alana initially, I noticed the difference in a couple of days. But I had to keep upping the dose and one day it just quit on me. So then we went to the prevacid equivelent in Aus and she was on that for a few months and was a new baby. We have now weaned and she seems to be doing OK.

If you aren’t noticing the Zantac is helping, I think I would ask for the PPI. It sounds like the Dr who prescribed it might have given you a good size dose (if the pharmacist though it was for a 2 year old!). Its interesting that the pharmacist over there have so much influence over the DRs that they changed their treatment plan.

BTW, the healthy appetitie and hollering when you take the bottle away was like Alana when the reflux first started playing up. Some of out bubs are comfort eaters…whilst eating they are swallowing so therefore not refluxing and the milk can sooth the sore eosophagus. Just a thought anyway. Alana got better with this once on a PPI.

Well she had an episode last night but my husband was watching over her so we caught it quickly–it was very mucus-y

the pharmacist didn’t feel comfortable; but made some calls and was willing to fill the script-BUT my reg ped dr. had left for the day and didn’t call me back to ease my concerns (it was a Friday afternoon) so I went with the lesser Zantac by getting the script from the nurse practioner–

Well the update after last night is we called the specialist GI and he was happy to write the script for the prevacid–

we are also going to the reg ped dr. b/c she has had some congestion which may be due to seasonal allergies

THANK YOU ALL!! I hope to see an improvement from the PPI–how long did it take to see how the med was working??

That’s great that you got a script for Prevacid! Generally it takes about two weeks, but it was only 10 days for my little guy.

What form of Prevacid and what dose did he prescribe? If it’s the solutabs, capsules or packets, be sure to administer it on an empty stomach and then follow it up with a feeding 30 minutes later.
