InactiveToday, Addy has been holding herself (down there) and crying and squatting. She did this about 5 times. Does this sound like an urinary tract infection? Has anyone else’s little one had one and if so, what were the symptoms? She hasn’t had a fever today. And we always wipe front to back. I called the pedi and she wants her to come in tomorrow if I can get an appointment….they will have to do a catheiter (spell?). I just don’t want to put her through that if its not necessary
she had one at 5 weeks and it was way worse than the allergy tests, endoscopy or anything other procedure that she’s had…any suggestions or advice?

InactiveCan you try to do a clean catch with her so they don’t have to do the catheter? When she first gets up in the morning, put her in an empty tub and run warm water over her hands and get something big enough to catch…. It may not be a true clean catch, but may give them what they need. Maybe pick up one of the collection cups from them so that you can put it right in and drop it off?
I think UTI’s are common in young girls regardless of hygene. My nieces would get them when they were young but not anymore.

InactiveThank, Ann Marie! I will definitely as the pedi if we can go that route…that would be so much easier than a catheter!!!!

InactiveIn Aus they also have little bags you can attach. Its not entirely clean but still a cathater is pretty invasive. They aspirated Urine from Alana’s bladder with a huge syringe at 8 weeks. In hindsight I would never let them do that again. They dipsticked her urine before that which they caught in the bag and it showed up lots of stuff, enough for me to be OK about them giving antibiotics. Really, the antibiotics aren’t going to do any harm, so why go to invasive techniques. They don’t cathertarise us after all!!!!
The only other thing, is she red down there…could she have a bit of a rash? Any discharge on her nappy?

InactiveI agree! Catheters are Super Invasive!
No, no rash down there and no discharge either.
When I talk to the nurse in the morning, I am going to ask about catching it somehow without a catheter.
I will let you all know what she says.
Thanks again!

InactiveThey have those little bags that Therese mentioned here too. I had to use one for Liza once. I would not allow them to catheterize her if you can get around it. I’d try the bag first. If that’s negative you can assume she probably does not have an infection. If it’s positive they may say, well let us do a catheter to get a “pure” sample to be sure. I’d say, no way, let’s just put her on antibiotics. This happened twice with Liza. She was squatting and crying so I think it burned when she urinated. The first time I refused the catheter they let her have antibiotics based on the bag collection being positive and the antibiotics worked and she got better.
Another time we had this nurse practitioner who I despise and she insisted on catheterizing Liza. I was very against it but felt pressured and allowed it. I could have kicked myself because the test came back negative but a week later she was crying when she urinated and we did the bag test this time and she had a UTI. Catheters can cause UTI’s.
I knew that and that’s what I was afraid of. Good luck. I hope your ped work with you on this. Keep us posted.

InactiveChristine, I agree with absolutely everything you are saying. After Alana’s UTI we had to collect urine in the bag a couple of times to make sure it had cleared up. Anyhow, I was talking to the lady at pathology when I dropped the collection of and she could not believe that they had syringed her bladder for a pure sample. She said if the dipstick is postiive it may be just a false reading because it isn’t an entirely “clean” sample but if something grows from the specimen it is very likely there is a UTI.
Tracy I hope Addy doesn’t have a UTI!

It makes me so mad when they don’t tell you these things. I had so many of these maddening experiences with Liza that I learned to research everything before allowing anything to be done to my child. One time when Liza was an infant they said one of her hips may have been out of alignment so I better have it X-rayed. I was leery because she’d already had too many needless x-rays for other stupid things which turned out to be nothing, but I agreed and they x-rayed her with no protection for her ovaries because they needed to see her hips. A few hours later I get a phone call from the doc and he said that the results are “inconclusive” because the bones are not yet fully developed or calcified or something like that (and that this was typical at her age) so she’d have to be x-rayed again later on.

InactiveTracy,
How’s Addy doing?

InactiveShe seems to be doing fine. She is really moody and tired today but no more episodes like yesterday of holding herself and crying. I couldn’t get an appt until tomorrow with our doctor (no shocker there!) but now I wonder if I should even take her? She is getting a molar so that would explain the moodiness. Still no fever. Hmmmm…I guess I will just wait and see. I look forward to the age where she can talk and tell me whats going on with her. I might not agree with that thought at that age though!

Thanks for all the advice! What would I do without you ladies!

InactiveYeah, it’s so hard when they can’t tell you. Just keep an eye on her. I just got over a UTI and I was completely wiped out when I had it. Really, really tired and weak.
If you want to take her in tomorrow it might be a good idea to call today or in the morning and see if you can get a collection bag to put on her a few hours before her appointment so you will have a sample to bring. Otherwise you will have to put the bag on her at the office and wait it out.
Serioulsy not fun.

InactiveYou might be able to get one of the collection bags from the pharmacist. I would probably collect and take it in as Christine suggested and get it dipsticked by the nurse (would they do that over there without a drs appt…they do here). Just to set your mind at ease?
I wouldn’t wait for a fever though…by that time any UTI would be systemic and could be affecting the kidney’s.

InactiveYikes, Therese. That’s probably what happened to me. I got so sick I thought I might die.
How come the fever doesn’t start right away? I noticed that with Liza…she never got a fever with a UTI….I guess we treated her early enough.April 26, 2007 at 9:20 pm #31569Anonymous
InactiveMy understanding is that if the UTI is a localised infection it doesn’t cause a fever as such at least initially. You know something nasty sneaking up the Urinary tract to cause an infection somewhere. This is the most common cause of UTI . But if it is left untreated and the infection might spread through the blood stream.
For younger infants I was told that the UTI is often a bug thats in the blood stream, like ecoli, causing the UTI and so it is systemic. You then get the fever and potential damage to other organs (Alana had to have ultrasound to check). In infants it can also result from bladder to kidney reflux…a whole other story but that causes reccurent UTI’s). Or somthing like that.
So not to be scary but I will always get the urine checked if I’m worried now, because by the time the fever is up the infection is full blown.
The problem they say with the bag collection is that if the urine touches the skin it could pick up some nasty bug thats just hanging around outside but isn’t present inside. Therefore the bag is a good screener for the lack of a UTI… if it is negative it is very unlikely there is a UTI. If it was positive I would try for a “clean catch”- peeing into a sterile dish or something prior to anything invasive.
You know I have never had a symptomatic UTI before…that is a hurting one, I usually just get really tired and run down and they test my urine and there are nasties in there!!!

InactiveHorrible, awful, no good, very bad day!!!!!!!!! So after reading the posts about this again, I decided to call the nurse and request an appt for today instead of waiting until tomorrow. She said no problem, we have several today. Okay so I took her in and waited, and waited and waited. Then the billing lady calls me back (which literally happens EVERY time we go) and said we have to pay $301.80 before the doc sees us. Well I had just paid $318.80 the last time we had went in. And strangely enough, I had a $17 credit (318.80-17=301.80!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)(why they wouldn’t use the credit to pay off part of the balance, I don’t know!). So I told her what amount we paid last time and even got my bank on the phone to with her to show her the payment. This happened of course, 35 mintues after waiting there. She said, “oh yeah, I see that payment now, but you still owe the other.” I tried to explain how strange it would be that I would owe the exact amount that I paid last time, but she was freakin clueless. Finally I got so sick of waiting and talking with this lady that we left. I am SSSSSSSUPER frustrated. I ended up paying the extra amount…why, I do not know. I am marching right back up there tomorrow and hopefully working this out. I know they double charged us. Poor, Addy! I HATE this doctor’s office but we only have 2 pediatric groups in our town and the other doesn’t accept our insurance…but thats who we will be going to now…I just have to pay for the entire visit at the time of service but at least this way, they can’t double charge me! $300 bucks is a lot of money for us! I had to charge it……..

I haven’t been this mad since the last time this doctor’s office pissed me off. So sorry to vent but I am calling in the morning to get an appt for Addy at the other doctor. Hopefully it won’t take too long since we will be new patients there. addysmommy2007-4-26 22:21:13 -
