Hi All,

Dagney’s been having some break-thru symptoms of the reflux–gurgling, clearing throat, 20-30 min naps again, coughing, smelly breath–so the doc refused to up her prevacid, but prescribed carafate. I know it mustn’t be given less than 90 mins from prevacid, but is there anything else I hsould know about it? Pros, cons? Thanks!!

i would lpossibly look into adding pepcid complete at night time for her. Trace used to wake 4-5 times a night even on 30 mg of prevacid a day, and he had some acid breakthrough, but since dr phillips suggested over the counter pepcid complete, it has helped IMENSELY. pepcid complete contains both an antacid (like mylanta) and an H2 blocker. it may be worth a shot?

my understanding is that carafate just coats the throat so it doesnt hurt as much?

carafate worked wonders for Jonah during acid-breakthrough finding the right PPI dose & combo of PPI/zantac when his reflux was at it’s peak…it’s a ‘short term solution’ and is not intended for longterm use…

Is pepcid complete a liquid? How much did you give him? Dagney’s about 19-20 pounds. Can it be given during the day? Her sleep at night is, she just wakes after 20-30 mins during the day and has those symptoms. Also, how did you get in touch with Dr. Phillips?

I’m not sure if it’s related or not, but Dagney also now has a horrible diaper rash. I’m wondering if it’s just because we took a long car trip this weekend, so didn’t change her as often, or if it’s maybe from the applesauce I started her on on Saturday. I’ll post this question elsewhere…

i give half a chewable tablet dissolved in a teaspoon of water at night-4 hours after his last Prevacid dose. based on his weight-17 lbs, dr phillips said half a tablet. im not sure if you would give more. you can email dr phillips directly with questions:

Hey Denise.. the rash might be due to the increased acid??? I sometimes wonder if it doesn’t make it all the way through their GI tract. When Ben has acid/reflux problems, his bum always looks worse.

Yikes…so much to consider!! I’ve been changing her diaper like every hour today, and using Triple Paste. It seems to be helping a bit, but I think I’ll probably cut out the applesauce for a little while anyway and try it again in a month or 2. Oh boy, she just woke up again from another 30 min nap…
