InactiveSarah has been drinking from her sippy cup like a champ!
However, she is now refusing to take formula in it.
I am thrilled at the fact that she won’t become dehydrated when we lose all bottles, but now I’m concerned about the lack of nutrition. It’s always something, right?
Is there a good vitamin supplement for babies/toddlers? Gee, I guess she’s not really a “baby” anymore…
Also, those pediasure things probably have milk in them, right? May 6, 2007 at 2:26 pm #32392Anonymous
InactiveWe used the Tri Vi Sol vitamins. They taste pretty nasty, but better than the Poly Vi Sol ones.

Keymasterum, ok what’s the big deal if she has a bottle or two? I mean what if it takes you a little longer to get her off the bottle?
I just don’t understand the whole “must get baby off bottle at 12 months”what if you were breastfeeding? I breastfed Jonah 2x a day from 12-15 months…
just my opinion

anyway, nuby makes those soft spout sippies that are like bottles but aren’t bottles
also I’ve read that if you put formula in a clear sippy it helps as they can see it, like a bottle…

Inactivei too wanted to know why there is that 12 mos. rule.. (not against it if thats what you do) but.. i dont understand it i guess.. is it bad for their teeth or something? i am asking too because shane WONT do any sippy for anything! soo i know its going to be a loonnngg time before he gives up his precious bottle
.also.. i’d like to know a good vitamin too and whats the difference between tri and poly vi sol? i mean i know what tri and poly is.. but is there a reason why some do one and not the other?
(sorry for taking over your post!)

InactiveI do not plan to wean Sarah from the bottle completely until I go back to school in August at least (she will be 16 months). I am NOT against all bottles by 12 months…just wanted to clarify that.
However, Sarah is showing less interest in them in general anyway. She is starting to drink it like it’s her sippy (one sip, pull it out, one sip, pull it out) So the volume of formula we used to get from bottles isn’t the same anymore. I tried dumping the remainder of her bottles into a sippy (thinking she’d take it better) and she didn’t want it. However she’ll CHUG a sippy cup with water and a little bit of juice. What concerns me is the major switch over from formula/milk to juice/water. I know she’ll lose a TON of nutrition and I didn’t know how people make that up? Vitamins? Good fatty foods? There HAS to be children out there that don’t drink large volumes of milk/formula past 1 year, right? Where do they get their good nutrition from?

InactiveWell, with my three when they started reducing their bottle intake I’d make it up by giving them a big bowl of oatmeal in the morning with lots of milk or formula. Myles gets 1/2 a cup of oatmeal mixed with 5 ounces of milk. It’s thin and runny so it’s a little messy but I think he needs the extra milk since he will not drink milk from a sippy cup. Also I still give him a bedtime bottle so he gets another six ounces there, and I give him yogurt every day at lunch time. I talked to his doctor recently about it (he just had a check up last week) and she thought he was getting enough protein/fat/calcium with what I am feeding him.

Keymasterjonah didn’t really drink any milk until 18months and even then it was a very little bit
however, he was not mspi so he ate lots of dairy/dairy products and calcium rich foods like broccoli, spinach and blackstrap molasses. I added milk & cheese to lots of things when I cooked and thankfully he was a great eater

we never did juice (I feel that they get the nutrients from the actual fruit), only water & by 12 months he was breastfeeding 2x a day and by 15months he was done and then at 18 months he would drink a little bit of milk from a sippy- the toss-& go kind was what he liked (again, maybe because you can see what you’re drinking?)
I see sarah is on alimentum- can she tolerate dairy in foods? can she eat yogurt or cheese?

InactiveNo opinions re bottles or not… but I think part of the rationale re reducing/eliminating formula at 12 months is that after this infants (magically?
) become better at absorbing nutrients from the food they eat. Prior to this whilst they eat food they are not great absorbers and can absorb breast milk/formula better? Anyway just what I heard.I suppose the complication for these MSPI babes is that they can’t transition to dairy at this age and so they still need their calcium etc???
Great to hear about the sippy Amy
. Thats a huge achievement.May 7, 2007 at 11:02 am #32481Anonymous
InactiveSeth was also on ALimentum but has being doing GREAT on the Pediasure. Pediasure does have some milk proteins but is more water than milk based. It is also Lactose Free. Our ped. said nto to worry about vitamins now since the Pediasure is pretty fortified but before she suggested 1/2 of a chewable Flinestone’s. They also make supplements in a liquid form that you give with a dropper if you are concerned she can’t chew a vitmain just yet.

InactiveTiffany, how much Pediasure does Seth drink per day?
Heather – I will definitely ask my doctor about vitamins. Thanks!
Laura – Sarah can do yogurt and cheese (had her first grilled cheese on Friday!) She has also done “hidden dairy” – Cheese-it crackers etc…

InactiveWe give Seth one Pediasure a day in the morning. He loves them and calls them his ‘bear drink’. This is what his ped. recommended. She said if they are good eaters than that is enough because if you give more, it may actually backfire since the Pediasures are so filling, they may end up eating less. They have helped Seth put on weight and he really looks healthy now… The Vanilla flavor are his favorite.

InactiveAmy,
I wouldn’t worry to much about Sarah not getting enough nutrition once she drops bottles…I think every baby goes through an adjustment period. When I first weaned Brianna I swore she was not drinking nearly enough like she was before, but you know what…she always gained and has always been healthy. And if Sarah can eat yogurt and cheese you know she will get plenty of calcium. That being said, my Ped wanted Brianna on vitamins too. Poly-Vi-Sol is what they recommended. Well they made Brianna retch and I figured she had done enough of that in her life with reflux, so I asked for an alternative. My Ped said give her 1/2 of a flintstone kid vitamin ( the plain ones…not plus iron or anything like that) crushed a day. So that is what we do. Brianna loves them, and that way I feel better. Good luck!
