InactiveHello.
Have any of you heard of placing kids with reflux on this medicine
(Erythromycin) as a way to help the stomach empty faster. My son is
currently taking it 4x/day (.5ml). My son is 5 months old. It makes me
nervous because it is technically an antibiotic, but it has helped
somewhat. Any information is appreciated.

ps:

to do a search: there’s the ‘search’ button located in the upper right hand corner of the screen
you put the key word/s you’re searching for
then you choose “Topic Subject” from the drop- down menu of “Search In”
then I like to choose “All Forums” from the drop- down menu of “Search Forum”
then I like to choose “Topic Start Date” from the drop- down menu of “Sort Results By” (this way I get all the posts from the past that might help me)

InactiveErythro.. is an antibiotic which kills good bacteria in your digestive system and can actually make reflux worse and/or cause diahrrea. I have heard of antibiotics actually lowering the immune system and making you more suseptable (sp) to the flu. My pediatrician suggested Erythro for my son, but it didn’t make sense to me since my son’s reflux was always at it’s worst right before he’d eat when he was hungry. So, I knew that he was refluxing the most on an empty stomach so, a med to empty the stomach quicker would make things worse. I found that “upping” the dose of Prevacid greatly reduced the amount of acid that came up. My son has silent reflux/sandider’s syndrome and I did not have to worry about him keeping his food down.

InactiveErythromycin does seem to have a mild motility effect, helping the stomach to pass its contents more quickly. The trouble is, if it is given long term, then your child’s body will develop an immunity to this antibiotic and it cannot be used in the future to kill bacteria. In general, a proper dose of PPI such as Zegerid or Prevacid is the best way to treat reflux.
