Landen is having an awful time. He is all of a sudden refluxing horribly today. DH and I finally got out for a date this evening (first time in 6 months) and when I came back Landen hadn’t eaten for my stepmom at all. It seems like he only eats for me. He was also still refluxing really bad. He has barely eaten since 2am yesterday morning.
When I put him on the chaning table he was literally doing backbends off of it he was arching his back and screaming so hard. The only thing that is different is that he got shots Weds (3 combo shots and the Rotovirus vaccine) and I noticed he’s been sneezing and coughing a TON since then. Could shots flare up reflux? I am SO confused and at my wits end. Please help me figure this out! I am so scared he’s going to go on a feeding aversion. I’m sorry to hear that he’s having such a hard time.
I’ve heard of at least one other baby on the board (sorry I can’t remember which baby) having a rather negative effect from that rotavirus vaccine. That’s a very new vaccine and I don’t think there’s much data yet on how babies react to it. I do think that shots can cause a reflux flare because pretty much any stress or illness can. I’d call the doctor tommorrow if he’s not much better. Also maybe try increasing his Prevacid and/or Zantac for a day or two to see if that helps. I forgot, what is his dose now?I hope tommorrow is better.
He’s on 15mg of Prevacid and 1ml Zantac once (well now twice I’ve decided) per day.
I was leary of the Roto vax too but was reassured it was fine.
thanks for your input. He seems to be in so much pain. I haven’t seen him like this in a long time and have a feeling it’s going to be a very long night.
Shots really created a monster in Carson. We only did the minimum. Our Peds Spec said that shots can be very hard on reflux kids. With Carson, if anything is going on – even a runny nose – his reflux is horrid. Watch his ears – if the nose continues, Dimetap dried Carson up and helped him sleep
. It also sounds like it could be spring/summer allergies. If so, he probably has post nasal drip going down the back of his throat, which will make the reflux so bad. If it continues, you could get a white count done to see if it is bacterial. If not bacterial, then it could be allergies – Zyrtec, Claritin (OTC).Hi,
I just wanted to put my 2 cents worth in that my son (now 6 months) is very different after his shots (fussy, refluxy, etc.) He has mostly outgrown his reflux, but after his 6 month shots, I thought we were back to square one w/ the reflux, and I even came back on the board asking questions about Pepcid Complete, etc., but after analyzing it and noticing his symptoms going away after a few days to a week, I realized the shots had to have had something to do with his flare up. Since then, he hasn’t had a day like that again! I’m so thankful. I’m already dreading the 9 month visit
Thanks for all of your input. He had the shots Weds and didn’t really have a hard time (other than fever) with a flare until yesterday, so I guess it was a delayed thing, just adding to the confusion. He is hardly eating which ALWAYS scares me b/c I am terrified he’ll just decide to stop eating and never eat from a bottle again one day b/c it hurts him so bad.
Momof4, thanks for the warning about the shots. Landen seemed to be making so many improvements until this and now I feel helpless again. I hope it passes soon, but now I dread 4 mos, 6 mos, etc

Just saw this post, so sorry, but did want to mention that Ben was one of the ones who had a horrible time with the rotovirus vaccine! YUK. It certainly caused some problems for him, and it was actually delayed a bit, like you mentioned.
Anyway, hopefully that’s all it was for Landon and now he is back to normal.
