After much debate we have started our 6 week old on zantac. Three days ago she just seemed miserable…hiccupping and spitting up seemed to be bothering her for the first time. My question is, how long until you saw a response to meds? Also, her spitting up seems more frequent now and especially after her dose, has this happened to you or could it just be coincidence? Any advise or stories about your experience are welcome!

I used Zantac for my first reflux baby and it was not helpful for her. It could be that her dose was too low.

Anyway from what I’ve read here it should only take a few days to see some improvement. And yes it’s possible for a baby to spit up more on meds. Sometimes they are basically silent refluxers (meaning they reflux up but swallow it back down), but once on meds it doesn’t hurt so much she they stop swallowing it back down.

Zantac is a very weight senstive drug so proper dosing is very important. If she seems better initially but things go bad again, it could be that she’s outgrown her dose, so don’t be afraid to ask the doc for dosage increases.

Does she seem to be feeling better?

We gave Zantac 1 week, then we did a formula change and gave that 2 weeks and then we switched to prevacid and have been on that now for almost 3 weeks. We were on the Zantac for a total of 3 weeks and had to increase his dose during that time b/c of the weight change. You may need to see if a dose increase will do it, and if not maybe you need a different med.

Check out marci-kids.com they talk a lot about different meds. It may even talk about how long it takes for them to work. That website is and of course this one is what finally helped Justice. Please keep us updated.

So far, no change in the spitting up/hiccups or fussiness. She did seem to sleep more quietly last night though. She hates the medicine! I feel bad giving it to her, but hopefuly it will help and she will get use to the taste.
Thanks for all the help and the website recommendations. I feel so lost with this – I never realized it was something babies could have – and I appreciate all the support!
