i am having alot of trouble with my reflux again. our ped gi told me i should probably see a gi, after i had the episode with food getting stuck on the way down—man that was painful. it happened again recently, not a long time like before, but longer than it usually happens. i just can’t afford to pay for any more reflux meds!!! kassie and tianna are both on prevacid—tianna had no symptoms, so we have no way to gauge if her esphagus is healing. kassie has alot of symptoms with her reflux, so it’s easy to tell with her. molly keeps telling me she has stuff coming up her throat, but hasn’t complained of any pain. how am i supposed to know if she is having harmless reflux, or if she has damage with no pain, like tianna??? i don’t want to go see a gi doc, it is just a pain to make an appt.—and the nearest one is 45 min to an hour away…….and i don’t particularly want to have an endo done——i’m afraid they might not put me out as much as they do children and i will gag the entire time and have a panic attack or something and totally humiliate myself. i feel like i have something stuck in my throat, alot—tonight my chest was hurting a little…………..i am really rambling here………..it happens alot when my pain meds kick in. LOL!!! lately i have this fear of saying something really stupid, if i already have, please be really kind and don’t tell me!!!LOL!!!
March 10, 2006 at 10:30 pm #3573AnonymousInactiveI’m so sorry that your family is suffering so much from this! I too HATE reflux!!!! BTW, did you have it growing up, or just later on in life?
March 10, 2006 at 11:01 pm #3576AnonymousInactivei developed it when i was pregnant with my twins—-that was 15 years ago. before then it was just the occasional, like everyone gets. i kind of wonder if i might have developed a hiatal hernia from carrying twins.
mylanta is really gross.
March 11, 2006 at 2:59 am #3585AnonymousInactiveMy dh has terrible reflux as well. His is acting up too, I truly think it is because he is so stressed out with Alexis’ upcoming surgery and work. That does make sense that you could have developed a hiatal hernia from carrying the twins. If you see the GI I would question that, see if he could do an x-ray or whatever they do these days to diagnosis hernias, it maybe a surgerical fix (I know that’s not the best answer right now for you but it maybe a solution, just like Alexis’ surgery) I am so sorry you have to deal with so much reflux in your family! My family is not as big but I completely understand when the majority of the family members have reflux it truly sucks! Hope you start to feel better. DH is actually on Prevacid 30mgs twice a day (ugh!)
March 11, 2006 at 7:30 am #3591AnonymousInactiveChristine,
You can contact the company that makes prevacid. You fill out a form with your income, ect….( they do not check it or ask for proof) and if you fit in their guidelines, they should send it to you for free. I don’t have a moment right now, but if you search on the net you can find their number. I’ll check back tonight and if you haven’t found it I will do a search. We were concerned with Dylan’s after insurance refused to pay for it (said we could get prilosec OTC) and the pharmacy was charging me over $300 per refill!
Hope they can help you! I think a lot of drug companies do this as well…..

Yes, reflux sucks… i had my first attack a couple of months ago. i lost 10 pounds (needed, given pregnancy weight) but still, because i could not eat, or drink, even water adn could not sleep. I know that for me it took about 8 days or so to be totally well, but then i stopped taking the meds and it has been fine since then.
I had an endo — you should be able to ask for sedation. At least most of them here in Spain are done that way. I remember nothing about it.
I hope you feel better soon! It is so uncomfortable.

Here’s the number. It is definitely worth a shot……Good Luck!
March 11, 2006 at 9:34 pm #3619AnonymousInactiveChristine – only have a minute, but wanted to tell you that my mom had the same symptoms (food getting stuck) for a few YEARS before she finally listened to us and went to see a GI doc…(she kept insisting she couldn’t have GERD because she didn’t have “heartburn”). She had the scope and biopsies done, and it showed she had something called a “shotskys ring” (I’m sure I spelled that wrong) which they stretched during the procedure. She remembers nothing about the procedure, and my brother, who had the same thing, also remembered nothing. In fact, I picked him up after his first and he was very happy and very funny – but later remembered nothing about our ride home even. They both have to take zantac daily – otc. I think you should do it – you’ll be sedated, and even if you do say something silly you won’t remember it!
March 12, 2006 at 8:30 pm #3665hellbenntKeymasterI was researching online for a friend w/ reflux- it’s making him CRAZY- so much so the drs are suggesting going to a psychologist…
I came across this http://www.medhelp.org/forums/gastro/messages/30181.html
& of course he’s not the only one with his symptoms, etc!! Sooo frustrating for everyone!!!not sure if this is even relevant to your situation, christine, but you might want to take a peek- it’s pretty interesting- I think folks even mention fibromylagia (sp?) like you have…
March 22, 2006 at 6:50 pm #4432AnonymousInactiveI know you have probably heard of this with your extensive knowledge of reflux….but you might try drinking aloe vera juice. I know I probably sound nutty always talking about the herbal stuff, but lots of people have good luck and it would SURELY save you some serious money. You could try it and see what happens. We use Lily of the Desert 100% organic and you want to get the kind that needs to be refrigerated. I know addressing your issues is probably not this simple, but thought I would mention it as something you could try just to see if it helps. Hope you are feeling better soon!
March 23, 2006 at 2:31 pm #4501AnonymousInactiveI take acidophilus pills (found in the vitamin aisle) everyday and that GREATLY reduces the amount and severity of reflux that I have. Now if I just take a TUMS after having something with tomatoes in it (pizza, spaghetti, etc) I’ll be fine.
My son had ea/tef when he was born, they had to reconnect his esophagus to his stomach when he was 3 days old. He had 6 stretching procedures to dilate the surgery site because it kept closing like an hour glass to help keep the acid from coming all the way up. BTW: a little trick is POP/SODA (COKE) when you get food stuck – it will fizz and break down the food, its very common with ea/tef children and it saves them a trip to the hospital to have the food surgically removed when it gets stuck.
