InactiveI have a 10week old, Ben, who has silent reflux. He is on the prevacid solutab and we are thickening his formula with oatmeal. He has been putting on a lot of weight, but the ped doesn’t seem worried about it. However, I am, and I was wondering if anyone knows anythign about simply thick. I heard it doesn’t have any calories and just thickens the liquid it is put into. I just didn’t know if this was safe. If it is, why don’t they recommend it for the babies who are gaining weight, but are still refluxing?
Thanks!

InactiveWe had Taylor on Simply thick when nothing else was working. She did not have any problems with it, it just did not help our problem which was formula related. Typically thickeners such as Simply thick and Thick it is reccommended for people who aspirate.

Inactivehmm…that’s good to know. He definitely isn’t aspirating, but does better with the thickening. I just don’t know what is right. We’re also having trouble at night. He doesn’t sleep for very long stretches and does a lot of grunting/moving around. Do others have this problem too?

Keymastergrunting & moving around seem to be a common occuarance on this board

most seem to think it’s due to mspi and/or refluxing a lot at night…
if you’re concerned about the gaining weight what happens if you dont thicken? ‘just’ more of a mess? ok: edited to add (bcse I justread you post closer
) that I am not so sure that thickening is used as much with silent reflux? I obviously don’t know & I also tend to thik that thickening is good for when a baby needs the calories to gain weight and/or if the baby is aspirating…that said, I’ve never thivckened & I have read a number of positive reports about it…I justwant to put it ‘out there’ that it is a bit controversial?are you divideing the prevacid dose into 2 or 3 doses? what does of the solutab does he get a day? are you giving it on an empty stomach?
sorry for all the questions

also: if you go to the upper right hand corner of the screen there’s a ‘settings’ button & if you click there you can go to ‘edit profile’ and from there to ‘signature’ & then you can put your baby’s name, age, meds, doses, formula, etc

InactiveI know that the thickening is controversial. Unfortunately, it is the only thing that has really helped. He was losing weight in the very beginning when I was breastfeeding. So, I went to pumping and did that for 7 weeks (had to stop b/c I also have a 3 year old who was not getting any attention b/t pumping and the length of time it took to give him a bottle). Then, we switched to fomulat b/c he seemed to do better with that. He continued to arch his back and scream through every feeding, though.
Pretty much as soon as we started thickening his feeds he improved. It was like night and day–he became a calm, happy baby. But, now I’m worried about all of the “risks” with adding the cereal (weight gain, diabetes, etc…). That’s why I was curious about the simply thick since it didn’t add calories.June 15, 2007 at 2:34 pm #36878Anonymous
InactiveDon’t be concerned about obesity and diabetes at this age. He needs all the calories that he can get to grow and thrive. I am a Dietitian and I work(ed) with stroke patients and those are the people that we use Simply Thick with. I have never looked at it being used with babies. It is mainly used for those who are aspirating and if he isn’t doing that then I would stick with what you are doing. Once he is mobile and able to get around, his wt will level out. The things to worry about are once he is eating solids just making sure you are giving him a good variety and that it is balanced and that you are not forcing food into him, that can start bad habits. Giving him cereal in his formula b/c it is making him feel better and keep his formula down should not hurt him. You may want to try putting less cereal in the bottle to see if he can tolerate a “less thick” consistency and that will cut back on the calories some.
