I just read about Carafate in a post… is anyone’s lo on it? What are the pros and cons???

We used Carafate in the beginning with Benjamin. It’s like super powered Mylanta, but it not only coats and soothes it also sticks to any erosions in the esophagus and helps to heal them.

The only cons that I know of are that it doesnt’ taste all that great and that you have to be sure to space it from the Prevacid as they can counteract each other if given too closely.

I’ve read several accounts of it being a lifesaver for people.

it really helped jonah when he was at his worse

it’s meant as a short-term solution, not a long term one like a PPI

but it worked wonders when we were at our wit’s end and he had breakthrough acid= it would calm him right down & then he’d sleeeep

Thanks Naomi and Laura — I wish I would have read about it before we went back on Prevacid. I think it would have saved Amelia a lot of pain! I assume it’s a prescription? I may see if her Ped Gastro will write one to have just in case…

mary, sylvia was given carafate to take before she went to bed. i don’t think that it particularly helped her sleep any better—but we didn’t really know what we were dealing with at the time. you are supposed to give it (1/2 hour?) before feeding—but there were a couple of times that i gave it to sylvia in the middle of a fussy feed and she seemed to settle down and eat better.
