After reading all the information, and talking to a friend who also had a reflux baby (he’s now 2 and fine) who took Prilosec, I’m really worried that our prescription wasn’t mixed right. We started on it this last Tuesday and I THINK it has been working, but I’ve also been told it takes awhile to fully kick in. My concern is that if it’s not mixed right, I’m waiting around for nothing and will have to start all over again. How do you know? Is there any ‘telling” besides watching for signs of improvement in the baby? My friend said it shouldn’t be cloudy. Ours is cloudy, pretty much white. What should it look like?

This whole thing is so frustrating. I wish there was a magic pill !

It is very frustrating. I think the best thing you can do to see if it’s being made right is to ask the pharmacist for an exact ingredient list and then compare it to the marci-kids instructions. I didn’t use the compounded meds so I’m not sure what they should look like.

Aww, I’m so sorry this is so frustrating for you, I CAN TOTALLY RELATE!!! The compounded forms are tricky because if they’re made wrong, you’re stuck with a wasted trial. Trials with meds are hard enough! My dd was on prevacid solutabs for almost two months eventually at max dose and it didn’t do a thing for her, we were nothing if not patient!!! Good luck with the meds, bummer I don’t have anything but sympathy, I know, but let me know when you find that magic pill!! I want some!!

In talking more with my friend, she said she was told that if the Prilosec tastes bad, it’s not made right. It should taste good and be translucent (and the mixtures she got that worked for her son were just that). The taste thing is the opposite of what I read somewhere here. I’m so stinkin’ confused.

I like the idea of asking the pharmacy for a list of the ingredients, but that doesn’t help for the current bottle (which is supposed to last a month…is that even right? I thought I read somewhere it should last more than two weeks).

Why can’t it just be simple?! 🙂

your friend might (probably is?) be misinformed

because there is not supposed to be any flavoring- you have to ask for flavoring on the side & if you get it, then you give it at each dose- you don’t mix flavoring into the compound…

I’m no expert on compounds, but I think you’re friend is probably mistaken. Prilosec tastes pretty bad (from what I’ve read here) when it is unflavored, and it HAS TO BE UNFLAVORED in order to be stable.

Even properly compounded it should last two weeks, not one month. If you want to stick with the Prilosec ask your doc to write the script for a two week supply at a time.

I think it would be fine to ask the pharmacist for a list of ingredients even for the bottle you already have. I’m sure they have it on file.

I’m sorry you are feeling so stressed about this. I sure understand. When I first found this site and my son was suffering so much I felt completely overwhelmed by all the information and all the (excuse my language) crap that I had to learn here and then educate his doctor about. It’s very frustrating. I purposely avoided the compounds because I was too stressed out to deal with it. Thankfully the Prevacid Solutabs worked wonders for Myles.

Hang in there. Once you get it right (the right meds, the right dose, etc.) things calm down and this will all be a distant (but lousy) memory.
