InactiveI’m wondering when babies normally “get” the whole cup thing. Right now Dagney does ok with it, she does seem to get some out of it, but most of the time just chews on the spout (I have a couple of the soft Nuby cups). All I’m giving her now is water in it, and she gets the Neocate in her bottles. Should I start trying to give some rice milk or something in a cup and see how she does? She hasn’t had the rice milk before, and I’d rather not get her started on juice, but I don’t want to give the Neocate in the cup and end up wasting it. How does everyone else handle this? I know they’re supposed to be off of bottle by 1 year, which would be wonderful because I’m planning on having a Dr Brown’s bonfire when she’s off of them, but even the hand-out my Pedi gave us said that some kids may need to keep bottles into the 2nd year to make sure they get enough milk. After this recent failed wean, it’s obvious Dagney is nowhere near even attempting cow or soy milk, so would you ladies suggest keeping with the water, or starting the rice milk or something else?

InactiveMy babies didn’t take to the sippy cup very well. My girls would only drink water from a cup until they were 18 mos or even older, and Myles still won’t drink anything from a cup except water. I’m glad to hear at least one doc suggesting keeping babies on a bottle until they are drinking milk from a cup. The push to get them off the bottle at a year is not good in my opinion….
Anyway, I think trying rice milk in the cup is a good idea. I was always worried that my kids would not drink water if I didn’t start with water in a cup first, but then they wouldn’t drink anything BUT water, so it kind of backfired on me for a while. I could definitley see why you would not want to waste the Neocate, so the rice milk sounds like a good start.Have you tried a straw cup? All three of mine did better with the straw cups at first.July 12, 2007 at 7:58 pm #39094Anonymous
InactiveIsaac still doesn’t do a sippy cup well but he switched to straw cups at 10 months old.

InactiveAlana doesn’t do sippys either but will do a straw cup, or just a drink straw in anything (she loves to blow bubbles with it). I have only done juice and water in it though. Now she is 1 I think I might try some of her morning formula (although she does love her bottle and cuddle time with mummy).

InactiveAlex just started to really “get” sippy cups. She used the Nuby cups fairly well around 10 months and she’s started trying to drink all of the ones that Kaelyn uses now. She has a lot of trouble with straw cups still.

InactiveI started using a cup with Ben when we started solids, and he “gets” it totally, but still won’t drink much from it at all. Some days more than others. I have tried the Nuby cups, but he will only chew on those, and, believe it or not, he drinks the best from his sisters regular sippy cups with the hard plastic lid. I don’t know if the it’s the colorful princess pictures on them, or the juice he probably swallowed once or twice when he got ahold of them, but he LOVES those things. Whenever he gets one, he sucks on it like crazy.

InactiveHappy Birthday Alana!!!
I guess my subject was a little off, Dagney seems to get the whole cup thing, but I’m really not sure what to put in it and when! With the Nubys she just chews on the top like Ben does, so maybe I will try a straw cup and a harder sippy cup too. I give her a regular cup fairly often and she actually seems to know what to do with it, although all the water goes pouring down her front!July 13, 2007 at 2:26 pm #39145hellbennt
KeymasterI keep a cup of water out & about for baby to ‘find’ and sip at throughout the day. Ari is just about 1(!!) & does fine w/ a straw cup- (the little nuby flip tops w/ handles are so cute) although I think it confuses him bcse he doesn’t ‘get’ how to tip a sippy back (bcse the straw cup he holds vertically). he’s starting to ‘get’ how to drink from the nuby soft spout, but he will not drink much milk at all only water. so I tried milk in the straw cup but he just sipped at it here & there, which is ok for wter, but not what I was ‘looking for’ with milk if this makes sense?
I’m also happy, like christine mentioned, that your dr understands that bottles can be used past a year! -
