hi everyone!! i hope this finds everyone well!! of course, i have a question and who better to ask than all of you?
riley turned three in march….and still LOOOOOVES his paci
. as much as i sweated over everything else in his early months/year, i don’t sweat this as much. however, i’m looking for some suggestions as to how to get rid of it when the time comes. i don’t feel in any great hurry, he only uses it at naptime and bedtime. still…..i know the time is approaching. the thing is, he really does love this thing, lol! i’m looking for a way that won’t totally break his heart (or at all, if i can avoid it!) and, uh hem, won’t mess up his sleeping
, as that is pretty good! probably too much to hope for, i’m sure, lol!i’ve already heard of cutting a little bit off and telling him it’s ‘broken’. he’ll freak out, i’m sure. he’s old enough (unfortunately) that we couldn’t get away with stuff like that without totally crushing him. ideally, i don’t want to do anything to ‘hurt’ the paci’s. we’ve told him that someday, we’re going to have to send the ‘night-nights’ (his word for pacis) to the ‘babies’. we have a trip planned to the post office, where we’ll send them to my sister and when she receives the package, the ‘babies’ are going to send a ‘THANK YOU!’ package back with special treats for him. he was really gung-ho about this at first, then one day he told me that we need to wait until he’s older ’cause the babies aren’t ready yet
smart cookie….i remember laura, that you had a similar situation with jonah, and wondered how jonah gave up ‘dewey’? anybody else, too, feel free to chime in! gulp, i know this day is coming and i dread it!

thanks in advance!

InactiveA friend of mine had the pacifier fairy come and take away all of the pacifiers and leave a present. It worked wonderfully for her. I haven’t had the guts to try it yet with Kaelyn. Like Riley, she only uses it for naps and bedtime, but she loves it. Plus, she’s been trying to give up napping, so I don’t want to do anything else that might mess up her sleeping.

Keymasterhey you!!!
You remember Dewey, awwww
!Dewey disappeared at about 3 & 1/2…Jonah was down to one Dewey, his Yellow Dewey (well I had a spare LOL) and he was down to just having it in his bed- Dewey stayed on his bed and was only for nap time and night time.I have a cleaning woman once a week and when she changed the sheets on Jonah’s bed, she would wash Dewey and so we’d find him either back on the bed or sometimes in the dish rack.Well, one day after Martha came to clean, it was nap time and we couldn’t find Dewey. We searched high & low and so I somehow convinced Jonah that he should take his nap & I’d try & call Martha to find out where Dewey is, but that right now he should try & take his nap (I also probably resorted to bribery at the moment, but I don’t recall the details, LOL)I did not call Martha. That night, I think I was home alone putting Jonah to bed and so I told him he’d have to go to bed & when Daddy came home the two of us would look everywhere for Dewey. I rock him before bed so I sang my usual lineup and then I told him the Dewey Story. basically it was the story of him being born, being a baby, etc etc you know the drill
, except I added in about Jonah loving Dewey, naming Dewey, etc. I told how Dewey was everywhere when he was a baby- bouncy seat, swing, carseat, excersaucer, clipped to his clothes, etc and in the story as he got bigger he only had Dewey in his crib & in the car and then he was in a big boy bed & Dewey was just for the bed (can you tell I go on & on
?), etc. Then I said, now Dewey is gone, but he’s in your heart & I told him to close your eyes (well I sang it) and remember Dewey and feel the love for Dewey, etc (yeah, I’m corny too!)….I must’ve yammered on & on enough to get him to sleep and that was that.Bye bye Dewey!!I told the Dewey story night after night (nap time too I would guess) until really it faded out of our routine…~lauraps: Dewey wound up in the laundry room- I guess Martha put it aside as she was doing laundry, but shhhhh!!!!And: Jonah never got ‘mad’ at Martha or at anyone it was SO much EASIER than I ever could have imagined. THANK YOU MARTHA, LOL!!!!July 20, 2007 at 10:50 am #39623Anonymous
Inactivelaura—-could you maybe rock me and tell me a few stories. i think that maybe you could could make me feel better about a lot of things right now!!!
i love how you did that with jonah.sammie used to suck her fingers. when i was at the orthodontist with some of the other kids, the ortho gave her a sweet little talk about it and she went home and never sucked her fingers again. he had tried the “talk” with her once before, but she must not have been quite ready.just remember that you have a couple more years before kindergarten. no one goes to kindergarten in diapers or with pacifiers—–and if they gave them up at 2 or two weeks before school started doesn’t matter.July 20, 2007 at 12:28 pm #39626Anonymous
InactiveWe are going to have to tackle this eventually, but one thing that I saw at work at the hospital one day was a little boy come in with this mommy and take all of his pacis to the nursery at the hospital and give them to the nurses to give to the babies. At first the nurses didn’t get it and were able to tell him that they couldn’t take them and suddenly one of the got what was happening and took the pacis and gave the little boy a big hug and told him that the babies would be very happy to have these pacis. I don’t know if you know anyone who works at a hospital who could arrange for you to do that or not, but it might make it easier if he is the one to give them away vs mailing them. Just a thought. Good Luck.

Inactivei feel better already!
you know you guys rock, right? so great to see everyone again. and, as always, the advice is stellor. wish martha could come visit me at my house…..if not for the paci patrol, than for the cleaning!! i could certainly use assistance in that department, lol!
i feel so good about this now that i’m just going to mentally ‘shelf’ this topic in my brain and visit it later. funny thing is, i DO work in a hospital so i could take riles to the nursery and do just what you suggested beth! very very sweet.
whenever we do have a sibling for riley, wonder how he’s going to take seeing the babe with a paci?
ehh, he’ll get over it! or maybe this baby won’t need a paci? hmmm….thanks again, ladies! have a great sun-shiney day!
