KeymasterWell.
I thought Ari has been eating so well!He really chows down by himself (self-feeding) and even lets me feed him (babyfood) with a spoon. He drinks water from a sippy throughout the day andnurses 4 times a day (it’ll be 2 times a day starting next month when I go back to work). He eats everything- meats, cheese, beans, pasta, veggies, fruits, yobaby w/ cereal for the iron & I even add ricotta cheese to his yogurt & to lots of other foods. We went to his 12month check up yesterday & he’s great with height- I forget the %tile but it’s 75th I think. But he’s OFF THE CHARTS for weight
. He’s 18lbs.Now, this isnt small per se, but I guess for HIM it’s small.Thankfully he’s not anemic. So now we need to go back for a weight check in a month.I’m actually not THAT worried, but I am. You know? She wants me to start Pediasure. Anyone want to share with me their experiences? When to give it? bottle to make sure he drinks it? Sippy because he’s a year? (I personally don’t care about the whole get off the bottle at a year thing). I guess I’ll try a sippy and if he just sips rather than drinks then I’ll give the bottle…I have to start adding oil and butter to everything. Yikes. So that’s the skinny on Ari. I have a tall skinny baby…~lauraJuly 20, 2007 at 9:47 am #39611Anonymous
InactiveWe did pediasure with Carter when he was not doing well with solids. He particularly liked the vanilla and we did a bottle because Carter always finishes a bottle these days….(even at 16 months).
I haven’t been around for a while, but wanted to reply and also say “Happy BIrthday”! to the boys!!! Did you have that amazing party yet? Sorry if you already posted this, but there will be no way for me to catch up at this point…Hang in there. The Pediasure is like 250 calories per bottle, so even one a day can significantly impact how much weight they gain.Ann MarieJuly 20, 2007 at 9:56 am #39612hellbennt
Keymasterhi Ann Marie!
I’ve missed you & was meaning to send you an email…glad to see you back! The party is tomorrow. Am I ready? Nope
. Well, I guess we’ll get it together…I figure the outside entertainment should be enough to keep everyone busy- the kids and the parents watching after the kids…I’m a terrible procrastinator so last minute cleaning and preparing will get done tonight & tomorrow (party is at 3:30pm)…my parents come in today, yay! Hopefully my mom will make some fattening food for Ari, LOL!~lauraJuly 20, 2007 at 10:37 am #39621Anonymous
InactiveWe added Pediasure to Seth’s diet at around 18 months (also due to weight concerns) and it has helped him fill out a lot. Since he was a little older, we did just offer it in a sippy since he was pretty much done with bottles at that point. Vanilla is his favorite too. I actually tried the banana and strawberry at first thinking he would like something different since he was also drinking vanilla rice milk at the time but he did not like those near as much. You can also get the vanilla flavor by the case at Sam’s (if you have a membership there) which will save you about $10.00 a month. We give Seth his first thing in the morning with a light breakfast (works out great because he drinks it on the way to daycare). We were told to give at least one but not more than two a day. They are very filling and ped. said if they get too much, they can actually backfire and cause them to eat less.
HTH.I am surprised they are concerned about Ari’s weight, he sure looks like a healthy little guy in the birthday post!
Good luck!July 20, 2007 at 10:41 am #39622Anonymous
Inactivewe were able to avoid a feeding tube because of pediasure. we gave it to sylvia in a bottle and i gave it to her when ever and where ever. i don’t worry about getting kids off of a bottle at a year, either, but if ari is already taking a sippy cup well, i think i would try that first—-especially since he is eating foods so well.
sylvia did not like pediasure at first. i had to start adding it slowly to her bottles—–but i can’t remember what was already in the bottle!!!!a friend of mine’s son went through a period where they were concerned about him being failure to thrive. the docs finally decided that there was no problem with his weight—–all his growth was just going to length. i think it all evened out eventually. sounds like this could be what ari is doing.i’m glad you have a doc that is rechecking his weight soon.July 20, 2007 at 12:54 pm #39631Anonymous
InactiveWe’ve tried pediasure with Hailey. She doesn’t like it much but she’s fussy. Most kids like the chocolate or vanilla, or like the carnation instant breakfast. They’re pretty yummy. I’d give it to him whichever way he takes it best. But, if he’ll take it in a sippy then I’d stick with that so it doesn’t pool in the mouth as long. The pediasure is pretty sugary so it can be hard on the teeth. You can try mixing it very slowly into whatever he’s drinking now, like Christine said. If he’ll take flax seed oil, that’s a great source of calories. When we were desperate, we added flax seed oil to Hailey’s purees, and even to her baby cereal. We also need to add butter and oil to everything. If the doc said not to worry, then I’d try not to worry. Going back to work can be stressful enough without having to worry about weight gain. Let me know if you want any other info on how to add calories to food, though I assume that you already have all the info since you’re pretty resourceful.

InactiveIsaac loves his pediasure! I think the vanilla is his favorite. You could try mixing with some frozen yogurt to boost the calories and make it more appealing. Or make it into a smoothie which is one of Isaac’s favorites. We do one at bedtime or 2 a day if he is not eating at all. Good Luck!

Inactiveari sounds exceedingly healthy to me. if he weren’t getting the proper nutrition, i highly doubt he would exhibit such growth in length.
this is such a hot topic lately….either your kid is chubby and we all know about our nation’s childhood obesity issues; or your child is thin and everyone worries about that too. i’m not at all discrediting your ped. i haven’t seen ari in person, however his picture certainly shows a well-developed baby. do his nails grow at regular intervals? is his hair shiny, does he have a good energy level, does he have good muscle tone? all of these things are important to consider too.
i don’t think riley was quite 20# at a year, either. i don’t remember his length though….
i remember when you used to tell us about jonah’s belly, and how big it would get because he was such a chow-hound! this certainly must be a change for you and i understand your concern.
let us know how things go with the pediasure. my gut feeling on this is that every little thing’s gonna be alright…..

Keymasterthank you all!
you have no idea (ok yes you do) how much your responses mean to me!Ari is fine; he’s a lean, mean cuddly machine
.Of course I’ll keep you updated!July 20, 2007 at 8:51 pm #39663Anonymous
InactiveI’m sure he’s fine. And he’s eating you’re great healthy foods, so he’s probably better nourished than a lot of babies.
He’ll probably pork up on the pediasure and then you’ll get a lecture about over feeding him.
I’d try the sippy but I have no qualms with babies being on the bottle after a year either…as long as you brush their teeth when they’re done.Good luck and keep us posted on your lean, mean, cuddly machine.

InactiveI have heard of the foods you give your kiddos as well.. and would worry about anything. well maybe i would, because i am a worrier too, but you shouldnt worry i mean 😉 . I would think there would be other signs of something like malabsorbtion( if that is what you were thinking of), if that was the case. He probably just has a fast metabolism. You know he is getting what he needs because he is growing.. just not as much sideways 😉
G’luck with the pediasure, i am sure he’ll love it.
