Infantreflux.org | Prevacid, now Zantac?

Hi everyone! Connor has been on Prevacid since he was 3 weeks old. First the compound, now the solutabs. After his shots his 4 month appt., his relux got so much worse. He will only nurse if he’s asleep, so the Dr. wants to add Zantac. From reading other posts, it sounds like most people are on Zantac, then Prevacid. I asked about increasing the Prevacid instead, but neither Dr. feels comfortable with that (he’s on 7.5 twice a day). My ped said she wouldn’t raise the dose until he’s 22 lbs. He’s 18lbs now, so it’ll be a while. Anyone try Zantac after Prevacid? Also, how do you get your lo to take the Zantac. It’s nasty!! I took it back to the pharmacy so they could flavor it with grape and it’s still pretty gross. Any ideas?? Also, the ped G.I. we saw doesn’t beleive that reflux causes pain in infants. He thinks all babies have gas instead, so he’s not helpful w/ the Prevacid dose.

That’s incredibleI can’t believe that someone who’s supposed to specialize in something would say something so ignorant. If he doesn’t think reflux causes pain, he should come babysit my dd when she’s not on meds!! From my own experience, after Kate’s shots and whenever she’s sick her reflux goes into overdrive and FLARES big time. How long ago were his shots? Have you tried bringing your docs the printed out research of the marci-kids info? That finally worked with our THIRD ped. Just throwing out ideas!!…although given that your G.I is completely wrong about pain in these poor babies, forget him That’s me swearing at him and I NEVER swear!!! That makes me so furious. Anyway, I have NO experience with zantac but I’m sure someone better at this then me knows!!

There have been a few babies on the board who’ve done well with the combination of Zantac and Prevacid. How many doses of Zantac did the doc suggest?

As for the taste, you could ask for the Zantac Efferdose. It’s a dissolvable tablet that tastes good (from what I’ve heard), so it would probably be easier to give.

I hope he’s feeling better soon. 4 months was a particularily bad time for my son. I’ve read here that reflux often peaks at 4 months, so maybe that’s what’s going on and it will get better soon.

jonah was on both until we got the prevacid ‘right’

just make sure to space the zantac 4hrs seperate from the prevacid

you can use a little mylanta mixed in w/ the zantac until you get the efferdose (if you try it)

I would make sure that you give a ‘high’ dose of zantac if you find he needs it – disclaimer: I’m not a dr – just check the dose w/ your pharmacist (ask her/him to consult her/his ipharmacist to tell you pediatric (GI) zantac dosing)- but it’s 5-10mgs per kilo so you have ‘room’ to increase up to 10mgsper kilo…

Alana was on the max dose of prevacid and the max dose of Zantac for a couple of months. I found it to be a great combination for Alana. We also ended up doing the Efferdose, and yes it does taste pretty good! Because it is a tablet there are some issues with dividing it to get the right mgs.

I was also told that reflux tends to peak around 4 months. My older son was started on 40mg of Nexium at 4 months of age through a pedi GI at our local Children’s hospital. Different GI’s have different philosophies about dosing and some are willing to be more aggressive than others. For my older son, the aggressive dose worked wonders and after a few weeks, he was just like any other non-reflux baby. But for a GI to say that reflux doesn’t cause pain in infants is just plain ignorant and if I were you, I would not go back to him unless he is the only GI in your area and there is no choice. You are the mom and you know your baby best and whether or not he is in pain.
