I decided to stop giving ds the Prevacid solutabs for a while because he was having stinky, stinky gas and I read that the solutabs have lactose in them. So we got the packets and, for ease, have been giving him half a solutab in the morning and then a whole 15mg packet in the pm. Once the solutabs run out though how do I effectively divide the packets? Any tips?

with the packets, a lot of people strain out the beads, as that’s the medicine

from Prevacdi 101 (linked to from groupie intro & also found in med forum in post ‘treating gerd w/ ppis’)

there’s info about the packets…there might be a link or info right there about how to best administer them

I just went and read that! Thank you. I only see that one person mentioned straining out the beads. I want to verify that that’s fine to do. The strawberry stuff isn’t necessary? Just double checking!

For some reason I thought that you couldn’t split packets well, though I think that Laura’s method is probably the best bet. Good luck.

I used to use a little tea strainer, and the strawberry stuff just fell through and I was left with the beads. I acutally used to then divide them (roughly) and then add a little of the strawberry flavour, some water and 1/2 the beads together (just so it had a nicer flavour). It was a PITA, but effective. Of course you don’t need the strawberry flavour, its an inactive ingredient. When I used the whole packet, I just made it up then syringed of most of the liquid (only so there wasn’t as much to get down). I used the packets for 4-5 months and never had a problem with them (once I got the hang of administering them).

evergreenie, just wanted to let you know that I’ve been doing as you recommended and it’s been working great for us. At first I tried just giving the beads, but Gabe hated it and I found out first hand that they are extremely SOUR – not bitter, SOUR!! Yikes. So I had to look all over, but finally managed to find a good tea strainer. I do just like you said and can administer even a full dose in one syringe or less! Thanks for your help!!

Glad to hear that it is working. I know the packets can get a bad rap (deservedly on occasion) but I also had great success with them.
