InactiveAfter weeks worth of research and 2 GI specialists, I finally got my doctor to put my daughter on Zegerid…..he even gave me samples to take home and mix up so she could get on it right away….after taking it for a week the doc called in the script for me…..he wasn’t sure how to dose it so I printed info off the marci-kids website and he went from that. My daughter weighs 11lbs so she should be getting approx. 4ml 3x a day…..so that is what he called in. The pharmacy called me right away asking how I was mixing this and storing it….I then faxed them the paperwork off the marci-kids website explaining how to dose and mix the Zegerid. She called me back saying that she had called the drug company and they have never heard of this….she went on to say there is no patent for this and I should not have been giving the medicine to my daughter this way….she also told me the drug company told her this was not stable in the fridge…it’s only stable at room temp. for 2 hours!!
I want some answers!! My poor baby has been suffering since she was born….she is now 9 weeks old and I finally get her on something…only to find out I could have hurt her more than helped her!!
The doc and pharmacy will not allow her to be on this…they wrote her a new script for Prevacid which I am to pick up tonight….someone please explain this to me.

InactiveZegerid was developed and tested here at the University of Missouri long before it was ever sold to and marketed by Santarus Inc in its present form. Please read and print out this poster, which was presented at Digestive Disease Week 2005, and show it to your doctor and pharmacist. It shows the stability and safety of mixing up Zegerid in the way that is instructed on the MARCI-Kids website. You will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer. This poster can be found on the PPI Dosing page of the MARCI-Kids website.
The pharmacist’s remark about the patent makes no sense, as the patent only covers the drug formulation, not how it is used.
I asked Dr Phillips about this issue, and he said that when Zegerid is mixed with the larger volume of water that is recommended on the package insert, then it is NOT stable for as long, even in refrigeration. But when it is mixed according to the instructions on the MARCI-Kids website, our laboratory tests have proven that it will remain stable in refrigeration for up to 21 days.
You have not hurt your baby in any way. I am sorry that your doctor and pharmacist are not more informed. Please email me if you need any additional information: andrewsjj@health.missouri.edu.

InactiveJust to calm your fears, my son has been on zegerid for 10 months and it has been such a god-send I can’t even tell you. It has made life easier because of giving it whenever you like or need to, and has really helped his reflux. I make up one packet each day and use what I need from that, keeping it in the frig after dosing. That way, we have fresh zegerid nearly every day, and I don’t have to worry about remembering when I made it. It only takes about two minutes to make it up, once you know what you are doing, and we keep ours in a shot glass in the frig. I use a 10 ml syringe for adminstering it that I bought at Rite Aid for less than two dollars. It’s too bad that your pharmacist and doc are misinformed, I encountered the same thing when Lucas first started Zegerid. We even had a ped gi refuse to rx it for us after I nearly begged her to. We switched docs, never looked back, and the zegerid has been amazing for us!
