InactivePed gave her solutabs 15mg? and said to give twice a day. What times should I give it to her? Doesn’t it need to be given b4 she eats? How long before I see results??
DD is 1/2 BF & 1/2 FF, he wanted me to switch to Good Start Supreme milk based. When I tried it before, she yakked up more, but I only gave it a couple days, he said to give it two weeks. She’s on Soy now and has awful screaming fits. Does the Soy Good Start have the broken down protiens as well?Do I switch the formula & try the new med now or should I try the med and then switch the formula so I know what is working???Also when I disolve the Prevacid in h20 it is very hard to suck up all the little granules in the syringe, how important is it to get every last one?I hope this works DD is SO miserable. Also, if you have any other tips on surviving reflux, lemme know!!!!Trina 🙂Nooknookmom2 2007-08-01 22:17:29 August 2, 2007 at 1:05 am #40307Anonymous

InactiveYou need to give the med on an empty stomach and 30-60 min before a feed. Also I wouldn’t dissolve it and then try and draw it up. Put the tab in a syringe, then draw up the water and let it dissolve in the syringe, or you can put it on your finger and put your finger inside her cheek. Should take about 2 weeks to see results. I would not change formula right now. But it does sort sound like she may have MSPI and in that case would need a hypoallergenic formula like Nutramigen or Alimentum. Just a thought, but try the meds first and then switch the formula so that you will know what is working. Good Luck.

InactiveHey Trina.
First off,welcome!…if I haven’t already welcomed you and forgot
With the prevacid,it HAS to be given on an empty stomach and followed up with a meal 30-60min later. A huge pain in the tush I know but the med won’t work if you don’t. For more information about dosing(to make sure your lo is on a decent dose. A lot of peds underdose(
)and if you don’t have the right info you could be living with reflux when really just upping the dose with give your baby relief)so I would check out http://www.marci-kids.com. They also have all of the reasoning there behind why you need to give the prevacid on the empty stomach. I think me TRYING to explain it would confuse us both
I would start by maybe splitting the dose into a morning and evening dose although a lot of kids have found greater relief with three doses just b/c babes metabolize the meds faster and need it more often. It’s unfortunately sort of trial and error.As far as formula goes, I’m not that knowledgable about it so I’ll let someone else address that but I do know it’s important to give these formula trials and med trials a good amount of time to let them work. Two weeks seems to be the magic number around here. Of course if your baby has reflux,she might also be MSPI which would mean that soy would irritate her but I would go to the Introduce yourself part of the forum and at the top is Laura’s(hellbennt)groupie intro. There is TONS of information there about mspi(if you scroll down)and even prevacid administration. Sorry if you’ve already been there and I’m being redundant
With the prevacid granules(what a pain,right?), I was always pretty neurotic about getting the granules in. I would go to the intro I just mentioned and I KNOW there are some good tips there. Me personally, I just always put it inside dd’s cheek and held it there till it sorta dissolved. That way I didn’t have to goof around with all the granules. It worked for us.Lastly, you’re going to get through this!!!!
It’s hard and scary and exhausting but there’s hope that eventually these babies will grow out of this. You’re here, and we all are here for you. Hang in there, and remember patience with reflux is the key…at least it has been for me. Sometimes when things aren’t going the way you want you want to change everything and keep trying things fast but these things unfortunately take time and me, I like instant gratification so reflux has been teaching me a lesson in patience. It’s so hard
Hope some of this helps!!!August 2, 2007 at 7:30 am #40313Anonymous

Keymasterare you stopping breastfeeding? because the doctor told you to?
sorry for being curious

InactiveI agree with everyone else…do ONE thing at a time. I started a new med. and switched formulas all within the same time frame. While I got the happy baby I wanted, I wasn’t sure which one actually helped her! Turns out it was both…but I hated not knowing for a long time. I’d definitely start with the prevacid! Good luck!!!!

Keymastersee, I’ll disagree about starting with the prevacid…if the soy is bothering her, I would stop it and switch…is there something that wasn’t bothering her before? or, can you just breastfeed? (maybe you’re back at work and can’t pump? I hate pumping
) so what I would do is this: go back to a formula that didn’t cause discomfort (spitting up is ‘ok’ because the meds don’t stop spit up- they help with the pain) and give something more ‘immediate’ like zantac/tagament/axid to help with reflux pain and, at the same time, start the prevacid (takes 2 weeks to heal esophogus and show it’s working) oh yes- space the zantac 4 hrs from the prevacid)so yes this would be 2 switches at once, but it seems you already ‘know’ the soy isn’t working?I hope more people post their opinions bcse I certainly don’t know about formula!!hellbennt2007-08-02 09:11:12

InactiveHi all & thx for the welcome!
See, I specifically asked this doc if I had to give the med b4 she ate & he told me no. Are they even aware of the meds they prescribe?So, if the Doc has her on 2x’s a day does that mean she gets relief from only 2 feeds? I’m confused, shouldn’t she get med’s at each feed then? This is SO hard! I BF on demand, how the heck do I guess when she’ll want eat to medicate her? I can time a bottle but a boob? Lol…I still BF her as much as possible-all night & most of the day, but she gets hungrier I’ve had to supplement since birth. I try to pump & get a measly 1-2 oz w/ both breasts unless I;m engorged.I have been sampled many formulas by peds- soy, added rice starch, gentlease, etc. I did try allimentum on my own but when DD puked we all almost did it stunk so bad, if I have to go back to that I’ll try Nutrigimen.It almost seems like the bottle really adds to her reflux, she sucks so much harder & then out it comes. Immediately. When BF things are quieter. I’ve used most every bottle out there & are on Dr. Browns now. I haven’t tried Born Free though.We have Kaiser & don’t always see the same ped. I’ve seen 4 for this issue, grr…This guy said to STOP the Zantac? So you think I can still give her Zantac in between Prev? I’ve been giving her Mylanta & it seems to help as much as the Zantac.This ped told me that if not better in a month I may have to stop BF so he can tell how much is going in.Are all of you babies fussy ALL the time?
She cries if not held most of the day. She’s only happy in the AM SFTER bf ALL NIGHT. The doc insinuated that it could be a neuralogical issUe w /her & freaked me out.To boot, her ins has a deductible on name brands & the Prevacid was over $100! I hope it works!THANKS AGAIN!-TRINANooknookmom22007-08-02 12:33:05

KeymasterDO NOT STOP breastfeeding bcse the doctor tells you to!!!
(this face is meant for the %*#*# doctor!!!)ok deep breath.this is one of the reasons I cannot leave this board.sigh.First of all have you seen a Internationla board certified lactation consultant? la leche league? there are ways to boost your supply. again, please forgive me if this is all old hat I truly don’t mean to offend you, just help
So, if you want to know ways to boost your supply let us/me know…Next: please get to a ped GI bcse these pediatricians dont always know the best way to treat reflux (well not all the GIs do either unfortunately)Zantac: yes yes you can give this also- just make sure it’s given 4 hrs apart from the PPIwe can help you with a ‘proper’ dose- let us know your baby’s weight…neurological issue: please read about Sandifer’s symptoms- this can GO AWAY with the right dose of PPI so again, I so so so do not like your dr(s)! sorry to be so blunt…this is long but full of info to help you :https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&PN=1&TPN=1 scroll down to read about breastfeeding a reflux baby also about Sandifer syndrome and moreAugust 2, 2007 at 3:33 pm #40356Anonymous
InactiveHi the doc I saw was supposed to be a Ped GI, I knew more than him. Sadly.
DD weighs 11lb 15 oz & is 13 wks old.I still don’t get how giving the dose to her only 2 times a day before 2 feedings will help??? If it is supposed to be given before each meal. Argh.I have tried many options to boost my suppy, not much of a difference.DD gets very frustrated when she BF’s and pinches & pulls and I don’t know if it’s the reflux bugging her or if my milk is low, b/c she won’t eat & then I have to give her a bottle. Then she starts to scream afterward and stiffen up and throw most of it up. The rest of the day then is a rollercoaster. During the night I BF her & seem to have more milk. She eats and sleeps happily, go figure.Thx for all the ideas & I’m sure I’ll have more questions.When does all this end???Nooknookmom22007-08-02 15:35:45

Keymasterit gets better with the right dose of meds… truly.
at 5mgs per kilo (being conservative with the dosing since she’s so little
)she could havelet’s say she’s 12lbs (one more ounce till she’s there
)that’s 5.5 kilos5.5 kilos x 5 = 27.5mgs total of zantac for the daythe liquid is 15mgs/ml (see your bottle)so that’s 1.8mls total for the day, divided up into 2 doses however you want (doesn’t have to be .9ml each dose, for example it can be 1.2mls & .6mls giving the higher dose in the a.m. because nights are ok)please don’t take my word for this, as I am not a dr! ask your pharmacist to check his/her ipharmacist, which is an electronic device w/ up to date dosing. this is what s/he should say the dosing is:oral pediatric dosing of zantac:Duodenal and gastric ulcer: children 1 month to 16 years: 2-4 mg/kg/day divided twice daily to a maximum dose of 300 mg/day
GERD and erosive esophagitis: children 1 month to 16 years: 5-10 mg/kg/day divided twice daily. GERD max dosage: 300 mg/day. erosive esophagitis max dosage: 600 mg/day
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~as far as your supply goes- I tend to think it’s the reflux bothering her & the more bottles you give, the less supply you’ll have- unfortunately it’s a downward spiral
…http://www.kellymom.com is an excellent resource, perhaps you can do a search about low supple or wrestling the breast or something…a International Board Certified Lactation Consultant as well as la leche league can help, too.The La Leche League Breastfeeding Helpline – US began on June 1, 2007. Everyone in the U.S.A. has access to toll free breastfeeding help 24 hours a day. Just call 1-877-4-LALECHE (1-877-452-5324).hellbennt2007-08-02 16:37:28
InactiveMe again,
What about the prevacid-is 2 xs a day going to help her? My Doc hasn’t even heard of Zegrid nor does the ins pay 4 it.
August 2, 2007 at 8:06 pm #40399hellbennt
Keymasteryes the prevacid should help, but you said you just started giving it? so that’s why I was saying to also give the zantac bcse it takes about 2 weeks to see the full effect of the prevacid. it was day 12 for my son, it was THAT noticeable…
I hope you can get help with your breastfeeding. I would guess that once your baby gets properly medicated then she will eat more thus increasing your supply…it’s so hard- the ‘ole supply & demand thing…have you tried nursing her in the bath tub? nice & warm & relaxing for both of you
…lots of skin to skin contact might help her nurse better…hang in there! -
