Inactive…for those of you with older refluxers/ reflux graduates… anyone else finding seasonal allergies popping up? both my husband and i have seasonal allergies, so i knew that it was likely (95%) that hannah would have them, also. what i wasn’t prepared for were some of the nuttier symptoms that are strangely like reflux: mood swings, waking often, waking early, decreased appetite…hannah is usually an “energetic” kid anxious to be outside, swim, see her friends. for the last week we have been getting up before 6 am, and often i end up sleeping with her in her bed before she wakes for the day. jeff took her to the ped yesterday who found no ear infection, sore throat, wheezes or viral/ bacterial signs…just made the diagnosis based on a runny nose and our concerns. the whininess and the sleep issues are a specific concern for us and i realize that these are often “age-appropriate,” due to just being 3…but the last week has been a total nightmare…and wondering if anyone else has had this experience.
claritin has helped…not as whiny or snotty today…and slept until 7 am, but still not eating…
i should add we live in the northeast…anyone else feeling miserable due to allergies here? i sure am…but it could also be sleep dep.jrhc 2007-08-03 12:36:05 August 3, 2007 at 1:39 pm #40441Anonymous
InactiveYes, yes, yes! Kaelyn suffers horribly from seasonal allergies. She’s was on zyrtec and is now on allegra. It really seems to help, but during the worst parts of the season she definitely has problems with everything that you’ve mentioned.

InactiveHi Becky ~ Yes, we’ve definitely got seasonal allergies going on. Hailey is also experiencing things like waking early and often – and mood swings too! I’ve felt like her nose problems (runny and stuffy, alternating it seems) and are the cause of her waking up a lot in the night. We asked her Ped for Nasonex this last visit and that has provided the most relief for her.

InactiveHi Becky! Hi Stacey!
Yes, unfortunately we’re deeling with the allergies around here too. I’ve been trying reactine for Hailey, and it does seem to help with the nose. Our ped keeps brushing it off, but she’s had a runny nose and rubs her eyes for a couple of months now. I never had allergies but developed seasonal ones after my pregnancy with Hailey. DH has severe seasonal and environmental allergies. Let me know if you find something that works. I know that periactin is an allergy med that also increases appetite if you’re desperate enough, but apparently it also makes them very sleepy. Hope you get some more sleep soon!
Stacey- how is Hailey doing overall? It was such a nice surprise to see your name crop up! I had to look back and make sure it was a recent thread!August 5, 2007 at 3:26 pm #40526Anonymous
InactiveAustin and I both have horrible seasonal allergies, he walks around almost all year long with those horrible “alergy black eyes”. Aidan however always has some sort of bacterial thing going on in his nose. Austin takes singulair, which I highly recommend, both the kids are on flonase, but I like nasonex better, it’s much less irritating on their little noses.
Our ENT told me to use claritin if the snot was clear and runny, but if it became thick and cloudy etc then I should use mucinex to thin it out so it didn’t block up his nose and cause more issues. Little noses decongestant drops also work wonders.

InactiveWe also deal with allergies all year long. Kayleigh takes Zyrtec but we may be changing soon. She does alot of the same things you mention Becky if we miss even one day. So sorry Hannah is going through this and of course you and Jeff too.
I also notice that if we leave town Kayleigh does great for the first 2-3 days then her allergies seem to kick into high gear which kicks her reflux into action.
Hopefully you will be able to get her eating again. Does she like smoothies? They sometimes help cut the nasty mucous taste in the back of the throat. Hope you get some ZZZZZZZ’s soon.I agree Stacey it’s nice to “see” you again. Hope Hailey is doing well and Happy Belated Birthday to her!August 7, 2007 at 7:45 pm #40667Anonymous
InactiveHi Lynn and Lori ~ Hailey is fantastic! We just celebrated her third birthday, hence my reason for browsing through the forum and posting on this thread. I was just thinking back to how much time I used to spend here and how much help everyone was. This forum was a lifesaver to me – literally. I wish I had the time to help others like so many helped me.
Hailey is doing great though, we haven’t had any reflux or food issues for quite some time. She definitely has seasonal allergies and we are still in the process of trying to find out what works for her. So far, we know that Zyrtec and Claritin do not. Nasonex has been very helpful. She’s turned into a wonderful little girl – so thoughtful and sweet. Me and dh have started thinking about having another baby (did I just type that – LOL) but we are soooo scared about all of this happening again. I’m trying not to let it make any decisions for me but it’s hard. I appreciate both of you asking about us and I hope your girls and families are doing well.

InactiveStacey, she looks so grown up! It’s hard to believe that she’s already three. It’s good to see you around here again.

InactiveHi Stacey!!!
I only come around from time to time these days too – Owen has been doing great and we really haven’t had to worry about any reflux or MSPI issues for a long time now. I’m so glad to hear that you and Hailey are doing well and can’t believe you’re thinking about maybe having #2!! We’re actually thinking the same thing too, and like you, I often think we might be nuts.

Really though, it’s great to “see” you – you helped me SO much with Owen in those early days that’s it’s nice to know they’re both doing so well.
Good luck with everything!
