Hi MSPI moms!

Owen will be transitioning to the older infant group next week and I got his info packet today with a menu in it.

What did you do with this info any of you with kiddos in daycare. My daycare said they would do whatever I wished, but I don’t really want to have to bring his lunch everyday. They have a wonderful variety and even stuff I wouldn’t necessarily have at home.

Did you just let daycare trial whatever minus things such as milk, cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese, etc?? Do I need to be more strict than that??

He has tolerated all foods that I have given him so far with hidden dairys in them- like crackers, puffs, etc.

I highlighted everything I thought he couldn’t have and my sheet is full of yellow! Not funny really! Good thing he’s only there 3 days a week!

HELP!!

Well, if Owen can tolerate hidden milk, that is WONDERFUL! I would be so scared, but if you stay away from the **dairy** then maybe you will be ok. I almost think I would give a list of things he could eat that would be very safe for him. Eating out is my biggest fear for our little one.

I really don’t know what I classify him…… Mild MSPI that got out of control with the wrong diagnosis plus he wasn’t on correct reflux meds for a long time???

Alana has everything at daycare that doesn’t have dairy in it…which leaves her with fruit and veges pretty much. It doesn’t seem to bother her at this stage though! I’m pretty happy to let them try anything that doesn’t contain dairy (hidden or other) but there really isn’t that much. I often send in some dairy free biscuits or bars for a bit of variety at snack time though.

I chuckled to myself when I read the title of this post because I went through something similar! I finally came to an agreement with the sitter that she needed to talk to me BEFORE she tried anything completely new. (mostly the dairy stuff). I had a gut feeling that Sarah couldn’t do dairy (b/c of her failed milk trials) but she kept proving me wrong by being able to tolerate yogurt, cheese, etc…so hopefully Owen will do great as well. Just make sure you let them know to only trial one thing at a time and to take it slow. I learned the hard way that OPEN COMMUNICATION is key! If they aren’t willing to make exceptions for him then I’d bring his lunch everyday! Good luck!

Hi Erica, I used to do the opposite of what you said, I would highlight everything he could have and mark out anything I thought would bother him. I always tried to get the menu on Fridays for the next week so I could go over it and plan on the weekends. On the days, where he could not get the main entree, like mac n cheese, I would bring something from home like pasta and marinara sauce instead.

I won’t deny it was frustrating and I am sooo glad that outside of actual milk, he can have pretty much anything now!!

I would also make sure that they note everything on his daily report what he does eat so if he does have a bad night, you might be able to tell what it was that bothered him.

Good luck!

With Kaelyn, I was feeling brave and let them try anything and everything. It was an absolute disaster. I guess I can look at the positive side and say that it sped up her developing hives/boils and led to her allergy testing.

With Alex, I’m afraid to let her have anything with milk or wheat (and I’m worried about eggs), so I’ve asked them not to give her anything until after her allergy testing on the 29th.

End result… we send food for both of them for breakfast, lunch and snack. It is a major pain in the behind, but it is safer for the girls and easier for day care. When we first discovered Kaelyn’s allergies we only sent replacements for “unsafe” foods, but her teachers were constantly panicking about giving her their foods and menu changes would cause major issues. Now we just try to match their food as closely as possible and send it all in. We now own a ridiculous number of gladware containers so we’ll have enough to send in all of their food and we have to run the dishwasher at least once (often twice) a day. But.. we know that they are eating safe food.
