InactiveDh and I are both lefties so we have been real curious to see if Seth will be too. He is eating for the most part and batting (t-ball) left handed but also uses his right hand a lot for other things. At what age can you usually tell for sure which one it is going to be?

InactiveI read somewhere that you shouldn’t be able to tell if your child is right or left handed until they are at least a year old–earlier could be a negative sign. So don’t worry! Heidi 🙂

InactiveTiffany,
Neither dh nor myself are left handed, and Sarah is a lefty. It’s funny b/c our ped also told us that you usually can’t tell until somewhere around age 2 b/c they’re quite ambidextrous and experimenting until that time. But it was always obvious with Sarah. When she started self-feeding she always used her left hand, and then it progressed to colouring, t-ball, throwing/catching, using scissors, etc. She also has the steoreo-typical lefty strengths- good verbal, not so great spatial. (Or is that a sterotypical girl strength??… I can’t remember!). DH used to be very concerned about her left handedness when she was younger, and his family used to want us to encourage her to use her right hand so that she wouldn’t be a lefty. I never cared much either way and thought that his worry about it was comical. Obviously once Hailey came along she gave him something to make him forget his lefthanded worries about Sarah. The only thing I have noticed is that she has a harder time learning to print then other kids do, and her letters go backwards. I was worried about dyslexia (I know, I’m a worry wart) but her teacher told me that they often see left handed kids make this mistake. I think it’s neat that she’s left handed, I don’t know why. I guess I never thought that I would have a lefty, but my sister is left handed, so maybe it’s in my genes.August 10, 2007 at 4:30 pm #40851Anonymous
InactiveThat is a great question. Neither dh or myself are but my dh’s father is a lefty and i am convinced that Cooper will be as well. Whenever I hand him a toy in his right hand, he automatically moves it to his left and then begins to shake it as that is his new trick (toy shaking). But it will be interesting to find out later if what I am suspecting is right. Sorry I am of no help.

InactiveI feel like a bad mommy. I honestly haven’t noticed if Kaelyn is right or left handed.
I don’t think that she has shown a strong preference for either hand yet, but it could be that I just haven’t been paying attention.August 12, 2007 at 6:44 pm #40941Anonymous
InactiveMyles is most likely left handed. He feeds himself with his left hand and does most fine motor skills (like scribbling, putting coins in his bank, etc) with his left hand. I noticed it long before he was one, but I read that you can’t be sure until they are two or three.

InactiveThanks, it’s interesting to hear how everyone thinks about this. The funny thing is, I think it would be neat if he was left handed (and I really think and hope now he is ) since both of us are but I was originally hoping he would not be because I think it would be easier for him if he wasn’t. It does seem like it is a right handed world sometimes. Hopefully, things have changed (but maybe not from what Lori said!) but I can remember my 3rd grade teacher hitting my hand with a ruler and trying to get me to write right handed. Like I could really change even IF I wanted to at that point…….

Keymaster‘they’ did that to my grandmother (father’s mother) & she switched hands…she was born in 1902, so this was a long time ago…’they’ also tried to switch my mother, but she is SO left-handed they gave up…

InactiveLaura, they also did that to my grandmother, and she did switch hands. This was also WAY back. I really didn’t think that they did that kind of stuff anymore with child abuse awareness.
I guess left handedness is in my genes… my grandmother, my sister, and Sarah.Did all you lefties remember having a hard time learning to write b/c you were left handed. Sarah’s teachers are using this as an excuse, but I’m wondering if she has perceptual issues that makes her printing so bad. I know that she’s only 4 (not even), but it seems like the other kids in her class are leaps and bounds ahead of her in the printing/drawing department, even though some of them are almost a year younger.August 14, 2007 at 9:30 am #41024Anonymous
InactiveLori, it may be somewhat true about lefties and writing. I have always had terrible handwriting and in elementary school I would get ‘Cs’ in handwriting but always did well in everything else. Also, I don’t know what type of paper they are using but it is hard for lefties (at least me anyway) to write in spiral bound notebooks and whenever dr.’s give me clipboards with info. to fill out, I always have to turn them upside down so maybe if she is writing in tablets that are bound at the top, it may be harder for her.

Keymastermy writing is fine- I guess I adapted, LOL. I smudge ink all up and down my hand but that’s about it…

InactiveThanks guys. Tiffany, they mostly use loose paper, so that’s probably not it. I guess it depends on the child. Maybe it’s just not her strong point.

KeymasterI would just make sure she’s holding the pencil/crayon correctly…
I think it’s important to get that started early so you don’t have to breakany bad habits later on… -
