My daughter was just put on Prevacid Solutab after Axid wasn’t working. Does it take time for it to work? She is still in pain after eating so I was hoping the meds were just not working yet and that soon they would.

Also, I have to dissolve the tablet in 4ml of water and then give her 2ml one day and give the rest the next day. I am noticing that the tablet doesn’t completely dissolve and leaves little granules and am worried I am not able to divide the dose correctly. Any one else having this problem? How did you fix it? I thought of cutting the tablet in half.

What is her dose? The med loses its effectiveness after it is dissolved and not given in I believe 15minutes. So if you are dissolving it one day and then only using 1/2 of it, and using the other 1/2 the next day that dose isn’t effective. It tells you how to administer it on the sample packet if you are using samples. If you are only using 7.5 mg/day then cut the tablet in 1/2 and store the other 1/2 in aluminum foil as the light will affect the med as well. I hope this has helped along with Laura’s above post.

It can take up to two weeks to see the fully affect of the Prevacid. It took this long for my son, but then it made a huge difference. If you don’t see a difference after a couple of weeks (or so) then she may need a higher dose. We’re not using the solutabs, but from what I’ve read on here you should break the tablet in half and only dissolve it as needed like Beth said. Also with the Prevacid make sure you’re giving it on an empty stomach, followed up with a meal 30 minutes later. (Sorry if you’ve already heard that). Another thing is you might want to continue giving the Axid until the Prevacid kicks in. You just need to space them 3 or 4 hours apart. Good luck! I hope it starts helping her soon, and she can get some relief from the reflux.

She weighs 7lbs and is getting 1/2 of a 15mg tablet a day. I cut it this morning and put the other half away and didn’t mix it in water. Thank goodness. Thanks for the info. Hope it helps soon.

Definitely try giving it the way Beth suggested. You can get a pill cutter and cut it that way. Then dissolve it in a bit of water. The granules are the medicine- the rest is flavour etc. Use a mylicon dropper instead of a syringe. It will pick up the beads and the liquid much better (Thanks for the tip, Christine!). It can take up to two weeks for it to kick it. Her dose is definitely on the low side so if you don’t see any improvement after 2 weeks, then you might want to go for a higher dose. Don’t forget to give it on an empty stomach and followed up with a meal 30 minutes later. Good luck.

Hi!

Just a thought, but you said you were giving it to her once a day right? Let me know if I’m wrong() but if you are, I might suggest breaking her dose into two a day or possibly three. My dd has 3 doses of her med spread out through the whole day and I know a lot of kiddos here have had success with the multiple doses just b/c babies metabolize meds so much quicker than us big people.

I hope the Prevacid kicks in soon or that you find a dose that does. Prevacid unfortunately never did anything for my daughter even at a pretty hefty dose but I know it’s worked wonders for a lot of babies here. You have my prayers that it works and I’m so so sorry if any of this is redundant!

I am reading that you should give prevacid on an empty stomach 30 minutes prior to a feeding. Right now that is almost impossible. My daughter expects to eat right when she wakes up. Otherwise she cries bloody murder. My doctor told me it didn’t matter when I gave it. I hope it still helps. Or maybe I need to wait until she is awake more and older than 7 weeks?

With Kaelyn it was almost impossible to get her to wait to eat. We would give her the prevacid as soon as she woke up and then give her a little water in a bottle to help it go down (we were holding the solutab against her cheek until it dissolved). The water would hold her off for a minute or two. Then we would walk her around, distract her, listen to her scream, as long as we could take it and then give her the bottle. We were usually lucky if we made it 15 minutes. The prevacid worked, but I’m guessing that the fact that we didn’t make it the full 30 minutes is part of the reason she needed a pretty high dose.

I used to sneak into Myles’ room while he was still sleeping (about 1/2 hour before he was likely to wake up to eat) and I’d squirt the Prevacid into his mouth and then give him a pacifier. He’d swallow the meds and go right back to sleep. Then I’d go get him and feed him 30 minutes later. This worked 99% of the time. And then as he got older it got much easier because he was on a more predictable feeding schedule and waiting wasn’t so hard.
