InactiveHow in the world do you transition a silent refluxer to a crib?
For Landen, there has always been a need to be upright, so he’s been sleeping at night in a swing since birth. He was on an apnea monitor when he was a tiny baby and we just could not have him even remotely flat. Even some bouncers were just not upright enough for him.Currently, for naps, he sleeps in a bouncer (now it is a toddler chair that has vibration since he’s outgrown the bouncer). I’m at a loss. Each day at naptime and each night at bedtime I start by laying him in his crib with his rainforest soother on and he falls asleep sometimes but always wakes 20 mins later crying and then just cannot calm down and we always resort to the swing. DH and I work full time and we have a 2 yo sleeping in the next room so it’s really hard to not just put him back in the swing.Problem #2 is this: I bought that Dex crib wedge. It isn’t a steep wedge, but lifts the mattress up some, but Landen slides down and all over the place and wakes up. So I got a sleep positioner, but he seems so uncomfy in that. He is a back sleeper. How do I EVER get him to sleep in his crib? Part of me thinks he’s still to uncomfortable to sleep on his back even at a slight incline. And if I incline him anymore than he is, well I cannot imagine how much more he’ll be rolling all over the place in his crib…
Any advice?August 12, 2007 at 5:29 pm #40930Anonymous
InactiveMy advice is this, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Take any and everything that anyone is telling you is wrong about it and throw it out the window. They never raised a refluxer and have no idea how hard it is. Now all that being said, if he is getting to big for the swing and that is the reason for wanting change then you may have to spend a few nights in his room to get him used to it. For the older child and dh you can always get a sound machine that will drown out any crying he may do in the process. My first slept in his swing until he outgrew it and then came to bed with me and then went into his crib. My second went from bouncer, to amby, to bed with me, and finally to his crib where he sleeps now. Don’t listen to anyone who says they will never sleep in their own bed because it is just not true. I wish I knew exactly what to tell you about getting him to sleep in his own crib, but it really sounds like the reflux is waking him up. If you don’t think that is the case then maye you will have to do some gentle sleep training to get him to sleep in his crib. That is what I did for Justice and he sleeps so well in his crib now. Sorry, if none of that helped.

Inactivei know what you mean my baby slept in the bouncy and sometimes in his swing for the first 5 months of life but then i tried just putting him in bed with us with 2 pillows under him. after that i started putting him in his crib for the naps with a pillow under the sheet cover of the crib….anyways i tried the naps for a week and then i did the night and after two weeks he started sleeping in his crib he still uses the pillow but sometimes i put him down completly flat and that works too maybe you can try naps first and then take it from then good luck

InactiveI’m not the best for help with this, as both of mine were in the crib from the start, but then again they both eventually slept on their tummies.
Anyway… to help with the sliding in the crib… try rolling up a towel and duct taping it directly to the mattress in a U shape. Then put the sheet on top. That way he will only slide down until his bum hits the bottom of the U.August 16, 2007 at 1:57 pm #41214Anonymous
InactiveI will tell you we did the tummy thing with Brianna pretty early, but I understand if that makes you nervous. But really, 5 months isn’t that old. I know of people who waited until much later than that to transition…so I wouldn’t worry about it. 🙂

Keymasterhow about putting the toddler chair in the crib?
I’ve read about people doing this to get the baby used to the crib…starting with naps…otherwise, I’m w/ shelby- you do what you do that works until you can’t do it anymore…August 23, 2007 at 12:54 pm #41545Anonymous
InactiveThe tucker sling worked wonders for us. It makes it possible to get a steep incline on the crib, and no sliding.

InactiveDoes he wake up 20 mintues after falling asleep if he is with you guys? Maybe he is waking because he realizes he is in his crib. That is what Adriana does, she sleep great if she is in our bed or on the couch next to us, but as soon as I put her in her crib she wakes up within the hour crying. And she has used a pillow since she was about 5 months and slept with us since she was born. If your baby is more comfortable sleeping the way he has been , then I would leave it that way.
