InactiveThe ped GI said to start a sippy cup at 6 mos–does anyone have one brand they have found success with?? and what did you put in it to entice the lo?
thanks so much!!August 13, 2007 at 1:07 pm #40996Anonymous
InactiveI haven’t heard about starting that soon. Cooper will be 6months on Thursday and I haven’t even thought about a sippy cup yet!. Can Leah hold her bottle yet? I thought that is when you went to sippy cups when they could hold their bottle. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

InactiveHello,
Caden started a sippy cup at 6 months also, and he has done great with it! He almost immediately started holding the cup by himself and has very good control over it so that he doesn’t choke.I don’t use the spill proof kind with the valves, because they are very hard to get liquid out of, and he gets frustrated. The ones we like best are the Nuby brand. They have a soft spout but are still spill proof without having a valve to mess with. Plus, the baby has some control over how fast the liquid comes out based on how hard he sucks.Good luck!

InactiveYeah I was surprised that the ped GI wanted me to start her at 6 mos.~Thank you! Yeah she was totally frustrated with the spill proof ones–she has been taking this little shell cup we have in the bathtub and holds on it and sips the water so I thought I’d give the sippy cup thing a try but those valves made it very difficult! What did you put in the cup? Leah is on thickened formula so I don’t think that will go through the spout~she is not a fan of pear anything which I really thought she’d likeAugust 13, 2007 at 4:11 pm #41006Anonymous
InactiveJust water
I’m sure formula would be ok, but with it being thickened, it may not come out too easily.August 13, 2007 at 4:49 pm #41007Anonymous
InactiveI would do water too.. that way if you get them used to water first..they wont need juice all the time 😉
and we use the nubys as well.. shane is a big bottle/nipple drinker sucker..and this was a good transition.

InactiveI always gave my babies water in their sippy cups so they’d be used to water and not always want juice or milk. It worked well for us, maybe too well though. Myles still won’t drink anything but water from his cup.
I don’t like the valve cups either. It’s just like a bottle because they have to suck to get anything out of it. I use straw cups or cups without valves. (You can just remove the valve and the cup works fine, but of course it’s not spill proof then).I’ve heard of giving them a cup by six months. My babies wouldn’t drink from one that young but I’ve known other babies who did.Beth, none of my babies ever held their own bottle! (Myles still doesn’t hold his bedtime bottle). So if I waited for that milestone they’d never get a sippy cup. Not all babies hold their bottles. I think when they are held and fed they don’t always take to holding the bottle themselves.August 13, 2007 at 5:19 pm #41011Anonymous
InactiveI always started with the Tupperware ones without the suction thing in them. My kids always just chewed on them otherwise it was like they didn’t know what to do with a sippy cup. Owen also seems to have a weaker suck, so when I started with those, I could just tip it back a little and water would come out. That way he knew there was something in there to suck for. I have all kinds though.
I would recommend looking for the ones with the softer rubbery stoppers, they are much easier to clean. I like the nubbys with the nipple like lid, but some of the nubby brand come with hard plastic stoppers and they are sooooooooo hard to keep clean. Especially if you find one under the couch three days later. Which has been known to happen around our house!

InactiveThanks so much for all of you help! I will definitely try the Nuby ones with water!

InactiveWe started at 6 months too, and we used the regular sippy cups, but I would just leave the valve out. Once he figured out what to do with it, I was able to put the valve back in. I just made it available to him while he was eating his solids. I would hold it for him at first. He picked it up quickly, but had trouble tipping it back enough to get it out. He’s figured it out now though.
We have the best luck with the take and toss cups. I know the lids leak a little, but he drinks from them the best.
The NUBY cups always leak for us! I have had the worst time with them.August 14, 2007 at 3:45 pm #41050Anonymous
InactiveReally, Naomi, I’m surprised? I’ve never had any trouble with the Nuby cups leaking. Well, I take that back, if the plastic top isn’t on the lid correctly, it will leak. I have actually had MORE trouble with the regular sippy cups with valves leaking. It seems like no matter how hard I push the valve into the little opening, if the cup is left sideways, it always leaks out! I guess none of them are perfect

InactiveOk Emily, you’ll have to tell me what I’m doing wrong then. I have thrown away several NUBY cups because of this. Do you use the short ones with the handles or the bigger ones like bottles? I was really excited about them at first, but I have had the worst time with them…

InactiveOh I hate the big ones that look like bottles. Atleast the two we bought were impossible for shane to suck anything out of. And i like the shorter fatter ones with the handles.. BUT they DO leak if you dont get the top on right! And usually while i am screwing the top on they leak all over me! But, once its on he does the best with them.

InactiveWe started with the Nubys as well, but after loosing about three of them, I switched to the disposable ones and I LOVE them! Also, we only did water in the beginning. We were lucky becuase I drink tons of water and Brianna has always wanted to do whatever the adults are doing, so she never really clammored for juice. But something that does help if they won’t drink the water is to add ice cubes to it….babies just love that clanking sound.

InactiveNaomi,
Well, I hope I didn’t sound like a Nuby representative or something! I just like those the best. I will say again that if the plastic top isn’t on correctly, they will leak…that is true. I don’t think you’re doing something wrong necessarily – you just have to put the top piece on just so. The main reason I prefer this type of cup is that it has a soft spout and is easier for a young infant to drink from without a huge mess. -
