InactiveOnce again Amelia is not napping. I have tried everything. It seems as though once she gets 12 hours sleep she’s done for the day. Do any of you notice anything like that? Today, for instance, I fought her twice for over 30 minutes each time to go down for a nap. Then I put her in her crib and she didn’t go to sleep. So, no nap. She finally fell asleep for 10 minutes when we were in the car. She woke up when I brought her in the house.
I am having such a hard time with this. She gets cranky and tired at about 5 pm when she doesn’t nap. I’ve tried napping her then, but she still fights it/me and doesn’t go to sleep until 7 or 8pm. I am exhausted from the fight, and from having to entertain her and watch her all day long every day without a break! She was doing fine for about 3 weeks, napping once or twice a day (for only 30 minutes each nap, but at least I could fit my shower in!) and now we are back to this! Please help!August 16, 2007 at 5:38 pm #41241Anonymous
InactiveAlso, every book I read says to put her down “drowsy but awake”. It is RARE that she is drowsy! My child has more energy than the Energizer Bunny!

InactiveDoes she sleep all night?
I doubt this is any consolation but my friend’s baby (born Feb 3) is exactly the same way. He sleeps all night (about 11 hours) and then is up all day unless she takes him for a car ride and then he’ll sleep in the carseat. I feel exhausted just thinking about it.

I can only imagine how hard it must be to have a no nap baby.
Does she cry when you put her in her crib at naptime? What if you gave her some soft toys, put on some soft music, dimmed the lights (or used a night light) and left her there for a while? Maybe if she didn’t think you were putting her to sleep she’d relax and actually fall asleep.
Sorry not much advice, but I wanted you to know that I’d be frustrated too. It’s hard to take care of a baby all day! I hope you figure something out soon.

InactiveThanks, Christine! Yes, she does sleep at night. We are having a harder time getting her down at night, though. She wakes several times before she’s really down. She will typically go down at 7 then get up between 5:30 and 6:30 am. I do feed her then. Most of the time she will go back to sleep for 1.5 hours. Then I am lucky if I get two 30 minute naps out of her all day! Is it possible she only needs 12 hours of sleep a day? I do put her in her crib with lights dimmed and a lullabye CD and her crib mirror is up for her to play with. She plays for a while and then gets bored and cries.
For about three weeks I was swaying with her and then jiggling her and she would go down really easily. But, true to her nature, it didn’t last.
Does anyone have a routine for a nap-fighter they could share?Thanks in advance!August 17, 2007 at 8:06 pm #41297Anonymous
InactiveOkay,if anyone has had to wrestle with their baby with naps it’s MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!
Kate napped in her swing perfectly up untill a week ago when I had had enough of hushing my house and waiting for 30min before she would even fall asleep in the swing b/c she’s older now(not as easily swayed to sleep)and thought it was time to party! Anyway, I became a mean mommy and took the swing away cold turkey. Up untill that point I had tried multiple times to put her in her bed “drowsy”and she would scream bloody murder and I would give in with the swing b/c I was so tired myself of the struggle.
ANYWAY, since last week I had had enough, I just sucked it up and did it. It was a looooooong week, but it worked. I made sure before I put her down she was tired(yawning, rubbing eyes, staring blankly into space etc…),I made sure the room was dark(black-out curtains),played her nap music(Dream With Me Tonight, LOVE it!!),and did a routine. Our routine was sit in her glider and read Goodnight Moon(I love, love, love that book)and then I sang her Twinkle, twinkle little star and then we said goodnight to the day(shutting the curtains),I lay her down and say ” I love you it’s time to go night-night” and walk out. THEN(big breath in)I go and check on her every five minutes or so give or take if she’s fussing heavily or crying only staying a max of 30sec(rub her belly, tell her I love her and she needs to sleep) and hurry up and wait.
Now it took a good couple of days for her to go to sleep under 15min but it’s worth it. Even though she only takes 4 30min naps a day right now, I’ll take it!!! I get a break. Yay for both of us!
Sorry this was so long but I totally relate to nap horror. I hope this helps a little. If you’re going to do it, do it and don’t give up. It really stinks for a couple of days(I think in the beginning she had a day where she slept 20min all day)but it does get better. You can do it!!

InactiveBen fights nap like they are going to kill him. He always has, and I think he probably always will. The only solution I have is that I have cut out naps before he was really ready for it (agewise I mean). At about 5-6 months, he was only taking 2 naps, and the morning nap, I would only let him sleep about 30-45 minutes. Then he would take a longer afternoon nap. Now, if he naps in the morning at all, he won’t take another one all day. Today I tried putting him down for a few minutes in the am, and he never took another nap ALL day, despite the fact that he was yawning, rubbing his eyes, etc.
The only thing that works for us, is to keep him up until after lunch and then put him down about 1 or 1:30. By then, he is so exhausted, he doesn’t fight it and will usually sleep for at least 1 1/2 hours and most times it’s 2 – 2 1/2 hours.Anyway, I totally sympathize. I too am trying to figure out when I can shower these days.

Keymasteroh have I been there! Jonah was sir no nap.
I have no advice, other than babywearing, and even THAT didn’t work all the time for naps (& he got heavy, LOL!)I just did our routne and tried so many different things like timing of meds, dosing of meds, etc etcall I can say is that he miraculously at 18 months became a napper! and he still will nap on weekends (yay!) and he’s now Four…August 18, 2007 at 7:30 pm #41360Anonymous
InactiveMyles definitely requires less sleep than my other two. He was routintely up between 4 and 5 am until he was 13 months old, whereas my other two slept until at least 8 am until they were probably 3, and they still sleep until 7:30 while Myles is up by six every morning.
Liza used to sleep 15 – 16 hours a day at 6-9 months.
Eliana used to sleep 14 – 15 hours a day at 6-9 months.
Myles used to sleep 12 – 13 hours at day at 6-9 months.
Have you tried white noise in her room? How about darkening her room?ndrose2007-08-18 19:30:59

InactiveI was just going to post the same thing…
BUT I have been slowly introducing gentlease formula into his alimentum, and I am trying to stick it our, as this is the only thing negative so far. I haven’t seen mucous, but I am really questioning myself if he is being so cranky because he doesn’t feel good or is he just being astinker…He is FINE when he is awake… -
