Hey there. I have triplets and one of has reflux. He spits up (if you can call all day vomitting spitting up) several ounces immediately following each feeding and then continutes to spit up more watery milk right up to the next feeding. He spits up large quantities with every burp. He seems to be still in some pain although it was a lot worse prior to meds. He is on zantac and reglan prescribed by his pulminary (BPD) doctor. They don’t seem to be helping with the vomitting. He no longer sees the BPD doc and the ped. doesn’t take it seriously because he gains weight without a problem. He is eating 8 ouces 4 times per day and acts like he could just eat and eat. He is eating the Walmart brand Gentle formula. Tried the Enfamil Gentleease and it was pretty much the same as this brand.

What would you do? Any suggestions that we could request or things that have helped you? Oh, by the way, we attempted cereal as well (doctor thought he was ready and in fact would help) and he just vomitted that up too. He was soaked! He is 6 1/2 months old (3 1/2 adjusted).

Is he still in pain? If so a good ppi could help. Zegerid, prevacid, or prilosec. If he is just spitting up there really isn’t anything that can help that no matter what dosage or drug. I know it’s a pain. We used receiving blankets to burp my spitter. I can’t imgaine having three. Justice’smom2007-08-24 19:58:56

I’m sure you hear this ALL the time, but BLESS YOU (you are blessed) to have three!!!!!!!!!!!

reglan and zantac seem to be the first meds prescribed by peds/doctors, “Just Because.” It’s probably just what they were taught and that’s that. Jonah was even prescribed reglan in the nicu and they had DONE testing and they pretty much knew he didn’t have DGE (delayed Gastric Emptying). Personally, in retrospect, I think they gave it to him to cover their butts legally- he was having apnea episodes (stopped breathing) and rather than have a dead newborn on their hands, they figured the possible risks of reglan, and the help it MIGHT provide, sure outweighed the apnea episodes.

anyway, there’s a lot of bad hype about reglan, but it has worked wonders for some babies, with diagnosed/VERIFIED DGE, in small doses. there ARE other motility drugs out there such as bethanecol (sp?) and erythromyacin (sp?)…there’s been a lot posted recently about people’s success w/ erythromyacin…I feel that if a baby has been given the stomach emptying scan (this is not just an Upper GI- it’s a specific test looking for DGE) and doesn’t respond well to other drugs, then by all means trying reglan is worth it…

You many not be able to do much about the spit up but the pain can be reduced or elimated. So many bubs do well on a PPI. If your pead doesn’t take you seriously you could a) send him/her the marci-kids stuff, b) get a second Paeds opinion or c) ask your family dr (a few of us have had more success with these. In the meantime have you tried any mylanta before feeds?

Well, last week his meds were increased and still problems. I asked for a GI referral and we have an appointment next week. The funny thing about his spit up is that he continutes to spit up right up to the next bottle and it never looks curdled. It looks like it just came right out of the bottle.

It can take a couple of weeks for the meds to have effect. Great that you have an appointment for next week. Good Luck.
