InactiveHow long until an issue with wheat would be noticable? It took about 2 weeks with the milk/soy to be obvious. The past 2-3 weeks I have been ginving Cooper oatmeal cereal. The past day or two he is really gassy, wakes up crying, and has a rash on his tummy and a bit on his legs arms and face. I think the rash may just be heat rash, but I’m keeping and eye on it…
Oh, also he is sneezing alot and red around the eyes- but we do live in central texas, so maybe that is it…Would it cause stools to be mucousy like milk does ( for us anyway ). He has had firmer stools, but I expected that…I haven’t changed any meds or given him any new foods that he hasn’t already had.He is teething but he’s been doing that for the past 4 months…Any insight would be great! Thanks!Tinatklavender 2007-09-02 17:14:27 September 2, 2007 at 5:28 pm #42071Anonymous
InactiveThat is a really good question. I would assume that it would cause mucousy stools as that is a way for an intolerance to show up. We have been on Oatmeal cereal now for 4 days and I haven’t noticed any problems, but again it has only been 4 days…. I hope someone can help answer that question for you.

Keymasterisn’t there cross-contamination? I think celiacs need to buy oats that are labled that they are not processed where wheat is…

InactiveThere is a very, very slight chance of cross-contamination. Kaelyn’s absolute favorite breakfast has been oatmeal for several months and yet she hasn’t had any of her typical reactions, so I’m hoping that it means that there isn’t any wheat in her oatmeal.
That being said, Kaelyn never had mucousy stools when she was reacting to foods. She would get a rash and tended to get constipated. So, it is possible to react without mucous.September 2, 2007 at 10:12 pm #42085Anonymous
Inactiveokay i feel dumb!! I guess I was thinking oats=wheat
duh…
so are oats a common allergen?i didn’t think about the cross contamination. I buy an organic brand that is soy free, but i didn’t look to see if it said anything about where is it processed.so if you have a problem with oats/wheat/etc does that mean you have celiac disease? sorry for my ignorance!TinaSeptember 3, 2007 at 12:08 am #42089Anonymous
Inactiveno, it does not necessarily mean you have celiac disease if you have a problem with wheat and/or oats. celiacs can eat oats, but most commercially produced oats are crosscontaminated. i buy guaranteed gluten free oats for my girls and they don’t have any problem with them. they are also quite pricey. you can be a celiac and not be allergic to wheat and you can be allergic to wheat and not be a celiac—either way, you still can’t eat wheat.

InactiveMakes sense, thanks!
I guess I will go back to the rice and see how he does. It is midnight as I am writing this and I can hear him on the monitor tossing and turning amd whimpering…Would corn bother a celiac?? I know for sure that corn products bother him. Not trying to jump to conclusions, just curious.Should I be wary of most grains then if these two bother him?TinaSeptember 3, 2007 at 7:27 am #42092Anonymous
InactiveOkay,
I just fed Cooper his Oatmeal this a.m. we have the beechnut kind b/c it is soy free, it does say it contains wheat and I am guessing from cross contamination issues. Tina, Look on your food label of your cereal and that will tell you if yours contains wheat. If it doesn’t then you don’t have any wheat issues to worry about.September 3, 2007 at 9:07 am #42095Anonymous
Inactivemy son is intolerant to wheat/gluten, however it is not celiac.

Inactivei did take a closer look this morning and it does say it may contain trace amounts of wheat. I guess that makes sense that it took the whole box before we started having some problems. Should I just avoid all gluten type things?
I guess we will go back to rice and try again later.September 3, 2007 at 2:06 pm #42100Anonymous
Inactiveceliacs can have corn. the only things that celiacs cannot eat are gluten containing grains—–wheat, barley, rye, spelt, kamut and triticale—and commercial oats because of cross-contamination.
what is going on that you think you might need to avoid gluten?September 3, 2007 at 10:34 pm #42134Anonymous
Inactiveit just seems that he is starting to act the way he did before we cut out dairy, soy and corn. Gassy, not eating, waking up crying. He also has a rash on his tummy and a little on his arms, legs and face. Red around the eyes, sneezing alot. We are close to being done with the box of oatmeal, and I haven’t added any other new foods or changed meds/dose. Maybe I am way off track, but that’s the only thing I can think of. Going back to rice just to see if he starts to feel better.
He hasn’t had any oatmeal today and took 2 good naps, first time in a few weeks! -
