We were able to get our ped to give us a prescription for pepcid before we see our GI on Monday (yeah!). She said .3 ml 2 x a day. My daughter is 10 pounds, 1 month…does that seem low (I’m new to Pepcid). Hoping it will help! Anywhere to see a dosing chart on H2 blockers.

I’m a pharmacist, and hopefully I can help a bit with Pepcid dosing recommendations for infants. First of all, what is the strength of the Pepcid suspension you were given? This is important to know because the dosing guidelines always refer to mg of drug, which you then use to figure out how many mL of suspension to give.

Here are the dosing recommendations (from my ipharmacist) for Pepcid in the treatment of GERD in infants and children:

Infants < 3 months: 0.5 mg / kg / dose given once daily

Infants 3 – 12 months: 0.5 mg / kg / dose given twice daily

Children 1 – 12 years: 0.5 mg / kg / dose given twice daily (maximum of 80 mg / day)

So for Daniel, being 2 months old and weighing approximately 5.25 kg, the recommended dose would be 2.625 mg given once daily. You could likely safely round this up to 3 mg per day since these types of medications (H2 blockers) are generally very safe and have very little if any side effects.

I hope this helps some, but like I mentioned above, you need to know the strength of the suspension you have (in mg / mL) in order to figure out the appropriate dose.

Thanks Laura. Now I’m completely confused though! I’m terrible at math ( I’m in the arts). Lauren weighs 10.3 pounds and was given 40 mg/5ml oral suspension but in a dose of .3 ml’s.

If anywhere here is able to figure that one out-I owe you! Otherwise, I’ll hit my husband up when he get’s home.

I miss solutabs!!!

I’ll give it a shot…

that’s 4.67 kilograms, so I’ll make that 4.7 kilos

Infants < 3 months: 0.5 mg / kg / dose given once daily

so that’s 0.5 x 4.7 = 2.35 mgs total for the day, given once a day

40 mg/5ml oral suspension

that’s 40mgs in every 5mls, so that’s 8mgs in every 1ml

and that’s 4mgs in every .5ml

so, to get 2mgs I’ll divide .5 by 2…

so .25mls is 2mgs & you’re ‘looking’ for 2.35

so it looks like your dose of .3mls is right on track…
