InactiveHi! We started rice cereal on Friday at 4 months, Yay! Peyton took the new experience well and it was fun to watch.
My question is if other mom’s breastfed babies had some consitipation after they first introduced rice cereal. I’m sure his body will get used to having some solids in him. The first couple of nights after I fed it to him he started grunting again in his sleep(that had stopped a little bit ago). He doesn’t really wake up from it, it’s just hard to listen to while I’m sleeping and he can’t rest while he’s doing it. I’m hoping it’ll help him sleep longer too although I’ve heard that’s just a myth. Right now he’s getting up once or twice a night to nurse at 4 months.

Inactivethere is no necessity for rice cereal. that stuff is like sawdust. have you tried it? 4 months is really early to start food, his digestive system may not be ready.

InactiveRice can definitely be constipating. With Alex, we waited until almost 6 months and then started with veggies and fruit. We didn’t try cereal until much later.

InactiveHey, I’m a breastfeeding momma, and we skipped the rice cereal too. It caused severe constipation with my daughter, so when I started cereal with Ben (around 6 mo.) we went with oatmeal.
Maybe try not giving it to him for a few days and see if the grunting stops. If so, I would hold off on the cereal for a while and try again in a couple of months.September 10, 2007 at 8:10 pm #42429hellbennt

I waited until well into babies’ 6th month (one refluxer & one not) for solids.no need to start with cereal…and there are links from groupie intro…September 10, 2007 at 10:01 pm #42440Anonymous

yup. both my bf babes got *very* constipated on it and ended up screeching with stomach pains. LLL suggests banana puree with bm as a first food.

InactiveI breastfed my boys as well. My first two didn’t have any problems with rice (although I didn’t start solids until 6 months) but Bryce did have some constipation problems with it so we did oatmeal with him and he did fine with that.

InactiveShane didn’t have a problem either. ..and we did it @ 3 months! (in his bottle).. .didnt know what i knew now! 😉 … but i guess the majority of children expecially w/digestive issues wait until much later.. and then maybe put something from the “laxitive” food group in it to combat the constipation! 😉
