InactiveI know you’re not supposed to fix your own baby food carrots due to the whole nitrate factor, but when does this no longer apply?
Is 1 year old enough for me to start giving him some cooked carrot pieces???September 11, 2007 at 4:50 pm #42477Anonymous
InactiveUgh, I hope so. I gave Carter cooked carrots the other night at dinner. Hope someone more familiar will chime in……

InactiveI did not know that! I have been giving Taylor homemade carrots since she has been 6 months old. The dietician actually reccommended I made my own due to all of her allergies.

InactiveHmmm.. maybe I’m wrong then. But I swear I read this somewhere, and I think it was on the info. you get from the pediatrician. I think beets were another food like it.

InactiveI actually have a vague memory after you posted this from our book written by the AAP that our peds gave us that has a section on home made baby food, but I really don’t remember the details, or anything……
Obviously it didn’t make that much of an impression, because i am feeding them to Carter and Dylan….September 12, 2007 at 11:42 am #42519Anonymous
InactiveI had never heard of that either, but I did a search, and apparently there was some confusion and people thought that the nitrates in carrots and some other veggies could cause anemia in babies, however it isn’t true (according to what I read). It said that the AAP only recommends avoiding those veggies before 3 months (when you wouldn’t be giving solids anyway!). Anyway, that’s what I found. Here’s a good link that explains it:

InactiveYea, Ann Marie, that’s where it was. I just looked at it again. It’s the AAP’s Caring for your Baby and Young Child, birth through Age 5.
Well, I’m glad to know it doesn’t apply. Guess who’s getting carrots for dinner!!

InactiveThat is the book! Shows how much I read and retained the information as I was feeding them to both of my children!!! I think it is collecting dust on my shelf….
