InactiveMy daughter is 7 months old we have been trying to feed her solid food now for almost 4 months. we started with rice in bottles at 3 months with horrific projectile vomiting results, the Gerber rice had milk in it, she is MSPI.
So at 4 months we tried Beechnut and spoon fed it to her, she loved it until about an hour later she experienced severe cramps and screamed for over three hours, I took her to the ER and they had no clue. After 6 hours of straight screaming, she fell asleep and woke up fine. The ER doctor told me she had no allergic reaction to the rice cereal and there was no blockage in her intestines and that i could continue feeding her rice cereal. Her pedi at the time told me the same…
Every day for 4 days cereal = screaming about an hour after eating. We tried Sweet Potatoes on the 6th day early in the morning thinking it might be different, but it wasn’t. I transfered pedis in the same office and he said no more foods until she was at least 6 months. He also wanted me to try (on my discretion) Nutramigen, b/c her BMs were still mucousy even though i was on the TED diet.
Month 5 was awful, she outgrew her dose of zantac and the new and old pedi would not increase her .5ml dose or switch her to another medicine. finally with some advice, i recently got my daughter to see a GI. he increased her dose to 2mls 2x daily with the hopes it will help her be able to eat better, no such luck.
At 6 months so far we have tried: nature’s best oatmeal, gerber organic green beans, gerber organic apples, homemade apples, and sweet potatoes again. All about 1 oz servings, she cries after she eats for about 5 mins. Then screams or is incredibly uncomfortable about an hour later for about 4-5 hours.
I was just wondering if anybody had a similar experience with their baby and solid foods? what could be causing her so much discomfort? She is not starving she is a healthy weight but i don’t want her to be 5 and still drinking formula!
We just got an upper GI done and are awaiting the results…

InactiveI’m so sorry to hear that Emily’s having a hard time. I think a lot of babies with reflux have very immature digestive systems and just cannot tolerate solids until much later than babies typically do. I would suggest just holding off on solids for a few months and trying again.
Does the Zantac seem to help with the reflux pain now that the dose has been increased? It might be worth asking your doctor to try a PPI medication like Prevacid. This med did wonders for my son’s reflux and it’s not as weight sensitive as Zantac. Just a thought. Some babies do fine on Zantac though. Good luck with everything!

Inactiveso far i think she is doing fine with the zantac. she still has silent refluxes, but she doesn’t scream when it happens anymore; she just makes an icky face

Keymasterhi & welcome! I have a LOT to say, lol!
and most of it is here: Groupie Intro: my intro: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&PN=1&TPN=1as far as mspi goes: there are INTOLERANCES & there are ALLEGIES- so it sounds like your baby is INTOLERNANT– many many drs don’t give this much consideration, but you are the mama & YOU know that your baby cannot tolerate (cetain) solids (proteins)…if you go to the main forum & click on the MSPI forum, there’s a top post called ‘mspi what I have learned & allergy info’- go to page 2 & scroll down to just under where you see ‘google cache’- there is a FANTASTIC explanation about intolerances/allergies & the diefferences, etc
so I would just go with the nutrimigen for a while longer- thre have been many babies who don’t have solids for quite a while, don’t worry she’s won’t be 6 (or at least it’s HIGHLY unlikely) that she’ll be 5 & still drinking formula- maybe 2, but not 5
– no really there are many many success stories here- go look at the ‘hip hip hooray’ forum
as for zantac the max dose is 10mgs per kilo so if you want to give us your baby’s weight we can help you out with the calculations- you can read all about these higher dosings here: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8288&PN=1http://www.marci-kids.com is the place to go to find out the latest research about PPIs & their PROPER dosingok that’s a LOT but anyway,so glad you found us!~lauraSeptember 13, 2007 at 8:25 pm #42618Anonymous
InactiveDanni couldn’t eat baby food at all. The preservatives made her really sick. Try cooking fresh veggies with no seasoning and mashing them up. This was the only way she was able to start solids. Good luck!

Inactivemy ds is almost 7mths old and can’t/won’t eat ANY baby food except oatmeal. his GI wanted him on solids to help with the reflux but he won’t eat them. he will eat table food though so we just stick with small amounts of that. he has the same problems when eating baby food, screaming and apparent gut pain. he has the same weird mucousy poos that no formula will help so i just kept bfing him. he is being tested for CF (cystic fibrosis) and we should have the results back next week.

KeymasterI read this article which states, as I believe, there is no reason to start foods in any particular order: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9646449/

cons of pureees: http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,21924101-5006007,00.html
I started w/ avocado, banana, sweet potato & pretty much just gave oatmeal or barley cereal sometimes to mix in w/ jarred fruits/veggies (all organic)
I did not introduce proteins until babies are 9months old- beans, poultry, soy, meat, yogurt, egg yolk, etc
I am very interested in this:

InactiveHey! I’m sorry that you are having such a rough time. I was also going to suggest that you look into her medication. Though you say that the Zantac is helping her, the fact that she is screaming right after she eats makes me think that she is refluxing the food and it is bothering her. Have you asked about a PPI? It might be worth a shot.

My niece was on of the puree haters
She went straight to table food at around 9 months. Also a friend’s son did thisSeptember 16, 2007 at 3:55 pm #42778Anonymous
Inactivebaby led weaning sounds very interesting! i am deffinitly going to keep this in mind and look more into preparing foods for my little one. I knew I was going to make my own baby food but i never considered that she might be able to eat food that wasn’t pureed. I will ask the GI about this tomorrow (we go in for the results of her upper GI) depending on whether or not she has DGE i would be very keen on trying BLW out.

InactiveJoe also hates baby food and just mooches off our plates. the GI said this was fine so long as we were getting some type of solid food in him. he’s only 7mths old but he loves stuff like meatloaf, potatoes, rice, chicken, pork, bread, pancakes, and carrots.

InactiveCarson had a hard time with bb food also. It almost seemed like he was *delayed* with eating/bottles but he was a full term baby. I also think with immature digestive systems, it is so hard for them to break their foods down. If yours is satisfied with the bottle, I would continue with that and not worry too much about solids. Carson does do very well with a DGE medication – so had we started that earlier, he may have been able to tolerate bb food earlier. However, I think by holding off, his little system may have healed more. It is just so hard to know!!!
