InactiveHey girls,
I’ve missed you all!
So, Kate started solids a couple of days ago. Yay! SO exciting! Anyway, we did sweet potatoes and bananas and she’s been fine and has turned into quite a porker which is soooo hysterical. She LOVES her solid food! Well, after I’ve been feeding her her 2oz cube of babyfood(I’m making her food and using the Superbabyfood book as a loose guide)she’s still hungry!! Kate isn’t MSPI but I was going to wait to add grains untill later but she seemed so hungry so I gave her cereal yesterday(Earth’s Best rice). She has been mucous free in her poops for awhile but it’s baaaaack!
What do I do? I mean obviously I think it’s the cereal but those of you solid food mommies out there, how long do you wait to add cereal? Do you just give them the fruits and veggies? The cereal has iron in it so what do you do about that? Heeeeeeeelp!!!…again!
Thanks a lot for the info in advance. Solid food is soooooo much fun(and messy),but I never know how much to give her or what! It’s like just when I felt secure in my ability as a mommy, BOOM!! The solid food insecurity begins! Arrrrg. That’s okay, she loves it as is a happy happy baby so what more can you ask for right?

InactiveAfter I trialed the foods with Cooper and knew he could tolerate, I gave him 2.5oz and then a bottle, so for you that would be the boob!. We have tried both rice and oatmeal with no luck, so we are just on fruits and veggies and have tried puffs, but he isn’t really into them just yet. I hope that helps. You could retry the rice cereal in 2-3wks and see what happens, I would introduce another fruit or veggie if I were you.

InactiveClaire,
I would wait until she is one to introduce grains again. Grains are hard to digest and it seems like her Gi is telling you she is not quiet ready yet. On the other hand, fruits like bananas, can make you feel full. maybe try sligtly watery mash potaoes and i would conitnue with the sweet potaoes and the other veggies. Also if she still seems very hungry, i would give her her solids them fisnish up with milk or start with milk, let say 10 minutes, then give her solids. She might be growing throw a growth spurt.I hope that helps. We learned by asking questions, and you are certainly being smart by asking. You go Mommy

InactiveThis is just what I did, but everyone has their own system.
I would nurse Ben about 4 times a day at that age (still am actually), but they would coincide with meal times. So, he would wake up nurse and then get his solid food breakfast. Same idea at lunch and dinner. That way, he was still getting mostly breastmilk, and would just eat enough solids to fill up. I have also nursed him, given solids and then nursed him again right after. But after awhile, that didn’t work anymore as he didn’t want to nurse after eating the solids. So, I just made sure to nurse him before his “meals.” As for the grains.. I would hold off probably at least until 9 months and then maybe try again. I wish I would have done this, but I did grains first with Claire and just used the same plan with Ben. I really don’t think he was ready for them. Now, ironically, he hardly eats any cereal. Hates it actually!
I would add in more fruits and veggies. If you are really ,really worried about the iron, you can always add vitamins (poly or tri vi sol both come with iron). I would think that pears or squash would be a good food to try next. Bensmama2007-09-21 14:09:19

InactiveThanks you guys. Yeah, maybe I’ll hold off untill 9mo. That sounds like a good plan. She actually doesn’t fuss or anything when she’s done with her bowl of food, she just seems like she could eat more. So I guess I’ll just give more fruits and veggies untill cereal. I nurse her and then 30-60min after is when I give her her solids. Kate’s kinda fussy with flow so she won’t nurse if she doesn’t feel like it. She knows what she wants that’s for sure!!!
Naomi- Ben looks soooooo much like you!!!! He’s adorable!September 21, 2007 at 4:18 pm #43064hellbennt
Keymasterfor foods there are a ton of different squashes
sweet potatoesgreen beanspeasfruits(you can buy frozen organic and steam them & puree them- fruits and veggies)blackstrap molasses is full of iron and calcium- you need to give it with some vitamin c- iron in general- to get it absorbed- so squash has vitamin c as does sweet potatos I do believe- so anyway I use a lot of blackstrap molasses when baking squash and sweet potato…September 21, 2007 at 8:16 pm #43076Anonymous
InactiveAlana never really liked grains much….that cereal stuff is bla. She did do OK with toast when she was on to finger foods….maybe you could wait until finger foods? Alana does fine with cereals now….she loves porridge but thats only been a recent thing.

InactiveLaura- Do you think Kate’s old enough for blackstrap molasses?

KeymasterI don’t see why not? you’ll only use like a teaspoon at a time per serving I would think…
I baked squash with blackstrap molasses (used a tablespoon for half a squash) and ari loved/loves it-it has a strong taste, but babies don’t know about ‘strong’ LOL so for whatever reason they like it- can’t hurt to try & if Kate doesn’t like it try less or try it another way or just put it away for a bit & try again…oh & I buy organic, but that’s just me…I also made french toast with egg yolk, more towards 9 months though, and used blackstrap molasses- same with pancakeshellbennt2007-09-22 09:23:16
